It takes a team of people to work with DDBC…you will meet these folks over the next few weeks. Each have a variety of roles.
Opening Prayer
Go to the Capstone Project Page - http://ddbcformation.org/overview/course-info/capstone-projects/ . Highlight one, two, or three stories. If you click on the image, it will lead you to the Capstone Project. Mention that these folks often did not think that they could do something like this. Yet, they learned and even today continue networking with others from DDBC. We are a community of Digital Disciples…and we welcome you into this community.
The next 12 slides are from Sherry Weddell’s Forming Intentional Disciples. It is key to understanding what Discipleship is focused on and how we will eventually become an intentional Digital Disciple.
Beginning to understand that we are “learners” in this ever evolving Digital World. This digital world has its own ebb and flow. We learn to apply the skills we learn to sharing the Gospel in Digital Ways.
Mvm’t from being followers of Jesus in an immediate, physical/earthly sense, to encountering the resurrected Jesus, to disciples discipling others, like St. Benedict’s vision for his monastery
Not possible to do unconsciously.
Not just for monks, priests, canonized saints
Can’t have the community w/o those individual decisions.
Elitist? Judgmental?
resonates w/ the Tradition and our experience – CCC notes, saints in history, and probably the saints in our lives, the people who live as intentional disciples
Not required reading
When I pause to think about this list and assess if it’s true based on my experience, the first thing that comes to mind are the intentional disciples I met here in the DDBC program. And anecdotally, it seems to be true. I haven’t encountered anyone in the DDBC. program who is all for some of these fruits but not others…so I think discipleship produces a fullness of fruits.
It’s not that problems go away. But I’m sure each of you can think of a small group, a ministry, or just a group of friends where almost everyone was an intentional disciple—and did these fruits manifest themselves?
Not rigid, sometimes a different order, repeat phases, etc. But it’s a framework. The journey of being a Digital Disciple is very similar. What is important is that you…
TRUST – trust that you will become comfortable with the digital world
CURIOSITY – this world constantly changes…so it is important that you stay curious…there is always something more to learn
OPENNESS – be open to the Spirit who will work through your digital interventions. The digital world is another way to Communicate the gift of the Lord in your everyday life.
SEEKING – you need to plan and focus on what you are doing…. Especially when communicating in the name of your parish, diocese, even your personal message..
INTENTIONAL DISCIPLESHIP – You have a feel for what it is to be an everyday disciple …and now you are being intentional in the Digital World. What will that mean for you?
Begin to use Twitter for Feedback and participation in response to questions in class. At this time, go to your Twitter screen and Search for #ddbc2016 and show live on screen.
Our goal here is to gather what others feel it is to be a Digital Disciple. Eventually we’ll put a video or something together with these comments/responses.
Note: The Producer could have their Twitter account open and searching for the Hashtag #ddbc2016 and have available to either show onscreen or share the comments on screen…or the Producer may want to use a mobile phone or tablet with the Twitter app..and search for the Hashtag.
Remind participants that even after this session, they can tweet their response to this question.
In this section, we want to highlight the overall general characteristics of being a Digital Disciple. It is important to highlight that we are ALL learning…and will continue to learn what it is to be a Digital Disciple.
The following quotes are from those who are folks already engaged in some shape or form of Digital Discipleship. What it means to be a Digital Disciple….is still in evolution. So, sharing and doing will shape and form what this means over time.
Producers – Affirm what participants are saying at this time….and if there is time we can share some of the comments.
Transition to exploring DDBC Goals.
We want to highlight here that we are developing our “Digital Minds” by engaging ourselves with using the variety of Digital Tools that are available to us. As any person knows, to develop any skill – sport – baseball, football, golf or to know any specific area of study…one sets time aside to immerse themselves in that world to learn more and to become “skilled” at using – a bat, a golf club, throw a football, operate on a brain…or whatever we set ourselves to do. It is the same focus that we need to become a Digital Disciple. We are learning with each day to talk a new language and to enter into a Digital Culture. The more we become like a Digital Native, the more we can travel in– what Pope Benedict called the DIGITAL CONTINENT. We truly are NEW MISSIONARIES in an every evolving Digital World. Just like missionaries who traveled to new countries – in order to serve and to relate – they had to study a new language and a new culture…to become inculturated in this new world.
What was part of the 20th Century model of education?
Lots of Books
Teachers
Classrooms and other students
Field trips
Liturgies and prayer experiences
Service Projects
Our goal here is to highlight - NETWORKED
A PLN Professional Learning Network is usually a toolbox of apps that helps one to connect and collaborate.
The “Networked Catechist” can learn from the “Networked Teacher” who today is utilizing technology in their everyday classrooms.
You will get some thoughts and ideas at this post – Using Social Media as a professional learning tool. http://www.schoolcio.com/cio-feature-articles/0109/school-cio-using-social-media-as-a-professional-learning-tool/54291
Also note….
Overall, we have a long way to go in order to become 21st Century Catechists. If you look closely at the suggested options here, ask yourself – What am I ready to bring into our learning experience. I have a dear friend who often says – “Caroline we do it “inch-by-inch”…and eventually we will get to “yard-by-yard.”
I invite you to visit the school your students or children are attending…and pay attention to the technology that is woven into their learning experience. Our children are comfortable with technology…we may not be.
When these standards first began, they focused on how to turn on/off a computer and they covered the very basics of word-processing, spreadsheets, and overall basic computer skills. Today they can be described as Global Standards that…
Transform education with the guidance of the global standards for learning, teaching and leading in the digital age.
Rapid advances in technology have led to profound shifts in how we live, communicate and work. It’s time to rethink education…and this also includes religious education.
These were once referred to as the NETS = National Educational Technology Standards.
NOTE: NETS are know known as “ISTE Standards”
International Society of Technology in Education – Organization that has researched and developed standards in the area of technology.
There are also NEW standards for computer science teachers.
We will relate all our content to these NETS, and you will have a chance to explore how the NETS can support 21st Century pedagogy in faith formation

Talk about this PLN culture – it’s not a linear culture.
Compare linear culture and networked culture.
Two Stories Here – From: Barbara Bray - http://barbarabray.net/2011/06/23/your-pln-helps-your-plc-become-a-cop/
(The Personal Part of the Network)
There is nothing new about PLNs. They are the people and information sources that help you meet your learning goals. Building your PLN means that you not only seek to learn from others but you also help others in the network learn. Anyone can make a contribution. Your PLN can be your most powerful learning tool no matter what the subject. My PLN used to be the people I met face-to-face: the people I worked with, classes I took or taught, friends and family, organizations I joined and the information was what I googled on the Internet, in books, textbooks, or periodicals at the library. Remember how long it used to take to find what you were looking for?
(The Personal but EXTENDED Part of the Network with Technology)
Now my PLN connects me to others and to information in ways I never thought possible a few years ago. I still use Google to search for information but now I can find trends, maps, and even literature reviews. Social networks connect me to friends, work contacts, and friends of friends. I can see what they are doing in Twitter, updates on their conversations and links to new information. Facebook not only updates the status of each of my connections, I can join groups set up by friends and learn from wall posts.
Our goal is to guide you in developing a NEW MINDSET…THAT WILL EMBRACE…the ever evolving Digital Culture…so that you BLEND what you are familiar with…with what you are unfamiliar with.
We are often asked, how much time should I plan on putting into this course? Those who are comfortable and skilled at using tech tools…normally spend less time than participants who have less skills. Even those with Basic skills are able to complete the program with careful planning and with assistance of their coaches.
Explain levels of participation
Explain homework must be done to receive credit for each module. IF you skip a homework component, we will ask you to go back and complete it before we sign off!
If you miss a module, you can watch a recording
Time Management is important! If you plan on flying by on a “Wing and a prayer”, you will probably NOT complete what you want to complete. I failed my first ONLINE course, because I thought I could do it on MY time schedule…not the CLASS time schedule.
Best rule to follow – Attend the LIVE Webinar – Read the Blog – Complete needed Assignments before the NEXT TOPIC!
To access this presentation (slides only) just go to the class blog. You can also link to these from the wiki, using the Navigation link “PowerPoints and Mini-Tutorials”
SLIDESHARE is different than the recordings! For Conferences, SLIDESHARE IS visual only but specific to the actual presentation.
Presentation Slides can be accessed after each webinar.
These PPTs are also included at the end of each Module in the Class blog.
Most of us, imagine learning as an instructor delivering information to you. Today’s learning model involves a variety of options. We attempt to model a learning network that will engage you in new ways to learn and share your faith.
What is a PLN? A system that helps YOU take control of and manage your learning.
“PLN” IS HOW DDBC WILL GET TO GOALS – This is different from a linear/sequential learning
In essence, we are helping you to create a PLN
Resources that will help you achieve your goals and learning objectives.
For this course, your PLN will include the elements shown. These are what we have set up to guide you through the learning outcomes for each module.
Presenter: Stress that participants are at different levels. Just encourage people to get comfortable with using as many tools as possible. This is a “networked way” of learning – this may be initially uncomfortable for you.
Many of our past participants have suggested that the Lab time be a self-paced section of the course. This is an important part of the program as you will learn a variety of tools. Again, depending on your level of expertise – you may feel somewhat overwhelmed. I’ll comment on helps ‘n hints for you!
You will receive a LAB HANDOUTS eBook. The basic steps will be here to guide you in setting up your accounts.
The handouts have been emailed to you. THEY are also available on our class wiki.
Go through the bulleted points.
This part has more homework tasks for you to complete, like setting up your SN accounts. This must be completed at the end of the lab sessions (February 17, 2016)
As part of your homework, you will set up a WordPress Account and request to join our blog. The sooner the better – it sometimes takes a while to get everyone enrolled properly. Instructions are in the Handout. Call your coach if you need help!
This is a PRIVATE blog so the comments that you post are ONLY seen by those who are members of this Class blog.
Watch for the invite to this blog. Or you can go to the Blog URL. You will be told that it is a private blog and that you need to ask to be a member.
You must be a member of WORDPRESS (Free) in order to have access to the blog.
There is an OPEN website for you. You will get an email after this session that will give you the link you need. Here you will find our recorded videos that will give you an overview of the tools. If these are helpful for you, they are here. No passwords are needed.
This evening is for those who may still have questions related to setting up and using these accounts.
We have about 70 participants around the country this time! We found that the best approach is to allow our participants to work independently first, but to be available for help if needed. However, there are only four of us. Review Part 1 of the Handout, PAGE 7, and refer to our consultation fee. The first 15 minutes of help per module is included, but additional help time can be negotiated for a fee if you need it. Talk to your assigned coach about this.
Show Orientation Handout Part one. These are the items you will find in the Orientation Handout, Part 1.
THESE HAVE BEEN EMAILED TO YOU. They are also available on our class wiki.
You will work on this information INDEPENDENTLY , so please read through everything in both PART 1 and PART 2
WHAT are we learning about?
For each module, return to the blog and look for “Did You Complete” instructions
Remind folks about the differences they may/will experience while using different tools. Desktop/Laptops normally all functions – variations with MAC/PC operating systems, tablets, and mobile phones depend on operating system and screen size.
Our training is unique, by providing you with “Hands On” experience with the various tools. Or goal is to develop your Digital Mind – to understand the culture, speak the language, and to develop the skills that you will need in today’s ministry world. It is often a slow process. Educators often say that for an everyday teacher to become really comfortable in using technology in his/her classroom, it often takes 5 years. Your goal – start slowly, and continue to develop your skills. Keeping up with your PLN is very important today!
Dreamstime – is a wonderful service website for free or reasonably priced graphics that you may wish to use in your online or print materials.
Here is where we can talk about the uniqueness of each culture.
The culture most of us grew up in was sequential, normally one thing at a time was accessed. If you made a phone call, it was usually to one other person.
Today’s culture is a networked, collaborative, and a participatory culture. We have tools like we have never had before…and we do not always know how to use them comfortably.
When I saw this ad in the AdAge.com magazine that I receive, I thought of “us”, as we are true trailblazers in this ever evolving Digital Age. There really is little or no path in this area in our field. So, we are and will be the trailblazers. My prayer is…
We have a web site! This is NOT related to the DDBC course materials, but is a good place to refer people to if they want more information about DDBC.
We always have a few people who have trouble connecting – even one of us this time.
Sometimes if the invitation comes to your email inbox, it does not allow you to connect properly. After connecting to the class blog, your SHOULD be able to see AND comment in the blog. If you can’t, let your coach know right away and we will assist.
