Ancient korea differs from the modern koreas, in that it was separated into four kingdoms, and half
of it was located not on the korean peninsula, but in modern day china and russia. As stated before,
ancient Korea was separated into four kingdoms: Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla, and Kaya. Goguryeo, the
largest, was mostly located in modern china, russia, and north Korea, while the others were squished
in the southern half of south Korea.
Goguryeo lasted from 37 BC to 668 AD. Only a minute record of Goguryan culture remains today,
due to the wars the country frequently waged. What is known is that the people of this region often
wore a predecessor of the "hanbok" (Hangul: 한복, Hanja: 韓服). In October, the people of
Goguryeo celebrated the Dongmaeng Festival in honour of their Buddhist gods. Goguryan art was
known for its finely detailed imagery, still noted today in tombs and palaces. The technology of
Goguryeo was often iron works. Many things, such as weapons, could be made using iron; making it

Baekje lasted from around 18 BC to 660 AD. Baekjean culture was influenced much so by chinese

Cross Cultural Reflection Paper
To do my journal assignment for cross–cultural learning class I met my Korean friend Hyung Jun.
We met in Gilgal café after we had our lunch, so since it was the peak hour for Gilgal café we have
moved to the 2nd floor where it is little quitter, while I have treated my friend with a drink. I started
the conversation with question that I really was interested in Korea and told the fact that I am
planning on studying my graduate degree in Korea.

Hyung Jun: "It is actually very interesting, there are so many things to study and learn about the
present and the past as well. I would say Korea did really good job on preserving its culture and the
history, and inherited through generations. Our history expands through different categories from
how to grow your food till how to eat it, from what to wear till how to wear. Overall development of
South Korea has really impacted the preservation of the culture. The new generation has been
widely spreading the culture and customizing it to match with the modern culture, but however the

As the daughter of immigrants, I had grown up with a strong idea of what my culture was and how I
identified myself. This identity had influenced my beliefs and the value I believed my parent's

In traditional society, the role of a woman is limited to her private sphere which is known to be the
household. Of course, throughout time we have seen the rapid growth of awareness for women's
rights, often resulting in protests and law changes. However, despite the new mindset, we are unable
to escape the patriarchal system that runs society to this very day. As a practice that is embedded
into our everyday growth, we often do not question its intentions. Our behaviours and attitudes

architecture of the Stern auditorium was based on an Italian renaissance revival where the utilization
of absorptive material in key focused areas above the stage; reduce the levels of focused sound and
allowed for the legendary acoustics that Carnegie Hall is known for. Each one of the pieces
performed throughout the concert reflected various cultural backgrounds as the main theme of the
show highlighting the diversity and social unity throughout the world. The program included an
assortment of pieces ranging from Korean and Chinese folk music to Russian Opera Arias followed
by more contemporary pieces including music from Coldplay and David Bowie in varying
arrangements compared to their original sound to fit in a more concert–esque style. The 25
performers of the traditional East Asian pieces brought from their countries original folk instruments
such as the Gayageum, a Korean zither–like string instrument and the guzheng, a Chinese plucked

to Korea, but because Japan lost, some of them become helpful, and some of them made serious

Music and dance were used for religious worship and for royal party through the Three Kingdoms
period. There were more than 30 musical instruments such as hyeonhakguem and gayaguem, which
were popularly used in Joseon Dynasty. During the Joseon Dynasty, music was respected as an
important practice for rituals and ceremonies. One of the traditional Korean dances was
Buchaechum, which was developed in Joseon Dynasty. It is usually performed as a big female group
using two pink feather fans per person. The dancers represent shaped images of flowers, waves, and
butterflies by using those fans. In 1893, a Christian hymn song was the first Western music that was
first heard in Korea. As Korea accepted a numerous different type of Western music and dances,
many performers tried to be a part of those western arts. Many Korean musicians went to other
countries to study and learn the western arts, and became the most notable performers in South
Korea. In 1945, Korea's first Western–style orchestra was made as the Korea Symphony Orchestra
Society. In 1946, the Seoul Ballet Company was founded. Further, the Government established the
Korean National University of arts in 1993 to cultivate talented artists by helping them to learn
globally. The phenomenon, Hallyu, means "Korean Wave" in Korean. Korean pop and traditional
cultures are fast sweeping the world, mostly in Southeast Asia, and also reach Europe and Middle

Sunlight leaked from the small hole in the wall. Unlike the ridiculously good weather, ear piercing–
screaming, devastated crying and wicked laughter caused goosebumps on Soon–Young's arms. She
lazily rubbed her eyes. Her whole body felt sore– her muscles ached painfully each time she
attempted to stand up. Soon–Young blinked her eyes. She wished that she was experiencing a vivid
hallucination after what she saw. She realized she wasn't in home.
Soon–Young tilted her head, wanting a better glimpse of where she was. The room she was in was
the size of an average bedroom in a fancy Han–Yang (old name for 'Seoul) mansion. But the peeled

She was forced to watch it– guilty never felt so horrible. Each time a bruise or a deep, bloody scar
appeared on her friend's body, Soon–Young shrieked in horror and begged for mercy. Salty tears
