About Us - A Fisherman's Tale of Tilapia Farming Passion
1. ABOUT US
A FISHERMAN'S TALE
Fishing for Tilapia “Bream” was a passion of mine from a very early age. Many
happy memories are of fishing at the golf course and doing homework under the
willow trees.
This passion was to be developed when I went to Barony Agricultural College in
Dumfries Scotland to study Fish Farming. Whilst Trout and Salmon were the main
species studied, I knew that Tilapia was the species I wanted to work with.
On returning from my studies I was fortunate enough to work at Willards Foods
Corporation. The company had embarked on building a large pond farming
operation, with a hatchery and research facility which I managed. Low temperatures
in the ponds forced the closure of the pond farm and a decision to venture into cage
farming on Lake Kariba. This was to be the beginning of commercial Tilapia
production in Central Africa and the farm at Lake Harvest remains a shining light for
the industry.
Tilapia farming remained in my blood and I was to return to the industry in 2005 in
South Africa. The past 11 years have been spent consulting and building systems
and farms. My work continues to promote interest and commitment to the industry
marking a new era for Tilapia production in the region.
I have developed an intensive re-circulating system which caters for the needs and
demands of the farming environment, technology, conservation, construction,
logistics and costs and is called the FarmInaBox System. This allows the farmer to
start farming with a ready to farm system. The farmer can start on a small scale and
build up to a large scale production facility. Every aspect of farming is covered and
taken care of allowing regular production, cash flow and profitability.
