1. Dan Watts
Question B – practice question
My ancillary 1 task is the various parts of an album, it consists of the album front cover, back
cover and the actual CD. The artist/music group that made the CD are called Sanctum of
House, straight away there are stereotypical connotations of the dance music genre. Also
the title of the EP is Discolights which again, straight away you can tell that it is a dance
music related CD.
I have applied Chandlers theory to my first ancillary task, especially to the front cover of the
CD. The use of the dove on the front cover symbolizes freedom and flying away from
everything which is what people do when they go to a rave/disco. They feel free and are
away from all their worries in life. The dove is also a synonymous symbol with drugs at
raves, especially ecstasy, which again relate to the subject of being free and drugs are also
heavily related with dance music culture. I have also used Chandlers theory in the
iconography on my CD because straight away as soon as someone looks at it they would be
able to tell what genre of music it is from because the producer of the CD is called Sanctum
of House. Sanctum is a word you would use to describe a place where people for a rave.
House is a very popular sub-genre of dance music.
Neale’s theory is also applied to my ancillary 1 task because on the front cover, back cover
and CD the 3 same colours (white, grey and black). Also the title of the song (Discolights) is
repeated on the front and back covers and the CD.
