2. 11 And now I am no more
in the world, but they are
in the world, and I am
coming to You. Holy
Father, keep them in
Your name, which You
have given me, that they
may be one, even as we
are one.
12 While I was with them, I
kept them in Your name,
which You have given
Me; I have guarded them,
and none of them is lost
but the son of perdition,
that the scripture might
be fulfilled.
13 But now I am coming to
You; and these things I
speak in the world, that
they may have my joy
fulfilled in themselves.
14 I have given them Your
word; and the world has
hated them because they
are not of the world, even
as I am not of the world.
15 I do not pray that you
should take them out of
the world, but that you
should keep them from
the evil one.
3. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of
the world.
17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
18 As You sent me into the world, so I have sent
them into the world.
19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that
they also may be consecrated in truth.
20 “I do not pray for these only, but also for those
who believe in me through their word,
4. Prayer
Chapters 13-17 of
John’s Gospel is
sometimes called the
“farewell discourse.”
Chapter 17 is one long
prayer to the Father
which places Jesus in
the priestly position of
a mediator between
humanity and the
Father.
Some call these verses
Jesus’ “Priestly
Prayer.”
“none of them is lost
but the son of
perdition”
The “son of perdition,”
is a reference to Judas
Iscariot.
Judas had rejected the
protection or defense
against Satan.
5. Judas had fulfilled what
was predicted in
Psalm 41:9
“9 Even my bosom
friend in whom I
trusted, who ate of
my bread, has lifted
his heel against me.”
Judas was never a true
disciple, he had been
considered and
treated as a friend.
He had eaten with Jesus
and the disciples yet
had lifted his heel
against Jesus by
selling him out to the
religious leaders.
Judas had chosen to
commit the ultimate
mortal sin.
The death of an
innocent man is
certainly a
grave/serious matter.
Judas knew his betrayal
was wrong.
He didn’t care, he
sought out the
religious leaders and
made his deal with
them.
6. Judas was not a puppet on
a string.
Judas made his own
decision and by so doing
he removed himself from
Christ’s protection and
handed himself over to
Satan.
Judas passed the point of
no return and thereby
fulfilled the scriptural
prediction.
Verse 15 I do not pray that
you should take them
out of the world, but that
you should keep them
from the evil one.
The place of Christians
during this lifetime is
not to withdraw from
the world but to
remain in the world
and to influence it for
good.
The consecration that
Jesus speaks of in
verse 19 speaks of
Jesus’ willingness to
die for the sins of
many.
Jesus prays that His
disciples, the ones
given to Him by God
7. The Lord's work
may be protected from
evil one, Satan.
In verse 20 we hear, “I
do not pray for these
only, but also for
those who believe in
me through their
word,”
The mission of the
twelve is to spread
the Word and thus
bring about the
salvation of future
generations.
Truth is spoken out of
love and builds up
because it is spoken
with that motive in
mind.
As we read Jesus prayer
we need to realize
that He is not only
praying on behalf of
His disciples but also
for humanity in the
hope that humanity
will do the Lord’s work
in a fallen world.
