Israel launched Operation Protective Edge against Gaza in response to rockets fired into Israel from Gaza. Over 40 Palestinians were killed and 300 wounded in Israeli airstrikes in the first two days. The Israeli Prime Minister called up 40,000 reservists and said Israel would use all its strength for as long as necessary to achieve victory. Palestinians in Gaza are virtually helpless against Israel's modern, well-funded military, which has occupied Palestinian lands since 1967 in violation of UN resolutions.
