Queen Margaret Critical Analysis
Queen Margaret: The Portrait of Fortune's Fool Through advancing the play's dramatic, thematic
and political growth, Queen Margaret is a force to be reckoned with in William Shakespeare's
Richard III. She affects the play dramatically through creating foreshadowing and contributing to
Richard's character development. Thematically, Margaret deepens the play's central views by
demonstrating the wheel of fortune's merciless nature, the futility of human prowess against fate's
plans, and that conscience is a dangerous device. By contrast, Margaret holds little political
influence throughout Richard III, due to her fallen status. Her impact in instigating these
developments is crucial to the play as a whole, and throws the concept of guilt, fate, and divine
knowledge into question. It is expected that Queen Margaret – a former queen of England, cast aside
by the York family after her husband's death – holds almost no political power in the play. Her lack
of influence successfully highlights the play's undertones focused on powerless female suffering,
matching the misogynistic views dominant in Elizabethan society. Margaret's voice is oppressed by
others, evident when Richard scoffs, "Foul wrinkled witch, what mak'st thou in my sight?" (1.3.162–
163). Margaret has reached rock bottom; she is viewed as a pariah, serving as nothing more than a
nuisance. Therefore, her pathetic standing with the court exhibits her loss of political influence,
exemplified further when Margaret

Princess Victoria And Prince Albert With Five Of Their...
The detailed and beautiful painting, "Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with Five of Their Children"
was painted by a German painter named Franz Xaver Winterhal. He was widely known for his
beautiful portraits of royal women. One of his portraits "Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with Five
of their Children" featured the queen, the prince, and their children. In the artwork, the queen and
the prince are centered with their children surrounding them. Both fully dressed in beautiful and
elaborate formal garments decorated with ornaments. Dressed in a red garment, next to Queen
Victoria, is her son who is staring at Prince Albert. On the right side of Prince Albert are two of their
daughters dressed in white dresses who are peering over an infant that is staring at something. While
in front of the queen and prince is another girl that is trying to walk. In the background of the
painting, it shows an open backdrop revealing a cloudy, blue sky with an ocean that stretches out in
the distance. Nevertheless, all paintings or artworks holds its very all importance depending on the
eye of the beholder looking at the artwork, as it will be interpret by what knowledge they have
obtained.
Even though, it is merely a family portrait, this artwork reveals a hidden meaning about the royal
family and their interaction with each other. The artwork reveals a closeness between the queen and
prince and their children like an ordinary family in the world. However, it also displays a bit of

Royal Bodies
Royal Bodies
"Royal Bodies" is a speech by Hilary Mantel, an award winning and bestselling English writer.
Hilary Mantel, born in 1952, is particularly famous for her historical novels. On February 21 2013,
at a book lecture at the British Museum, she held a speech, in which she commented on the British
monarchy.
Hilary Mantel starts her speech by telling how she, last summer, was asked to name a famous person
and choose a book to give them. She chose Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, "a jointed doll on
which certain rags are hung". This is a good way to start the speech because Hilary Mantel has now
introduced her real purpose with the speech: to discuss the effect of monarchy.
Hilary tells how she at a book trade event at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this quote she indicates that the royal family are like trapped caged animals that the public never
really know, and that that is something perhaps to be regretted. The royal family is, according to
Hilary, a thing that is expensive to conserve, but interesting to look at and that is also the only
reason that they exist.
Today monarchy has become an attraction, which flashes every side of the royal family. Hilary
Mantel believes that we are looking at royalties as if they were figures or dolls, who we can treat as
we want to. We always have a comment to what they are wearing, if they look good or not, what
they are doing right or wrong etc. We are allowing monarchy to treat its persons as entertainment
objects.
"I'm not asking for censorship. I'm not asking for pious humbug and smarmy reverence. I'm asking
us to back off not be brutes". In this quote Hilary says that we need to stand back, and this is clearly
her goal with her speech. We need to allow the royalties to be humans as well.
Hilary Mantel's speech is tendentious and personal, because only one her own opinion is presented.
Looked at the speech objectively it is weak because of the lack of proof, since she is only arguing
with her own personal opinion.
In the speech there is an illustration of Paul Emsley's portrait of Kate Middleton. She describes it
like this: "But in her first

The Kings Speech : A Film Adaptation Of A True Story
The 2010 critically acclaimed film "The Kings Speech" aimed to showcase the struggles of King
George VI as he dealt with his stammer and becoming King. The tale follows the King along with
his therapist Lionel Logue, as they try and find the best way to cope with the issue before the Kings
first wartime radio broadcast. Although this movie is just a film adaptation of a true story, it is still
able to show the viewer a lot about British Culture during the 1920's, which has even carried into the
modern day. Additionally, "The Kings Speech" reveals the importance of saving face as well as
power distance within the United Kingdom. At the beginning of the movie, the relationship between
Lionel, and King George VI, (who is referred to, as Bertie throughout), is weak. This may be due to
the fact that many place special treatment on him because of his Royal namesake. When Lionel and
Bertie first met, Lionel made sure not to sit too close and waited for the prince to choose a topic of
conversation. This reveals that the Royal family plays a big role in British culture. They place a lot
of emphases as well as respect on them, and they are very much a part of their lives. The emphasis
on the royal family and the fact that this movie was even created about King George VI suggests
that British culture puts a lot of value on their history. They are very much about keeping tradition
and sharing their history, which is why they created a film doing just that. When a royal

Speech On The Royal Family
A fairy tale is in every little girls dream. The handsome prince followed by a magical wedding with
the perfect gown that will blow everyone's mind away. For some this will always stay a dream and
for others they will simply grow up to realise that nothing is like the fairy tales. Yes, the kingdom
does exist and probably will for a long amount of time. But it is nothing like it has been and will
never be again. In our modern days is democracy and modern warfare valid. Thereby does the royal
family have a smaller participation, then there have been in history. It can be argued if one would
even consider that the monarchy have any actual power left. These days the royal family is simply a
portrait of a long line of nationalistic tradition. They are more likely considered famous people who
have duties such as attending fashion shows, giving the annual New Year's speech, making sure to ...

"Last summer at the festival in Hay–on– Wye, I was asked to name a famous person and choose a

and thereby has she entered the meaning of her speech. From the beginning of her speech, it is clear
that Mantel's feeling towards the Royal Family/the monarchy is directed in a negative tone. She
feels despair towards Kate Middleton's public appearance as artificially comparing her to a jointed
doll; "It's rather that I saw Kate becoming a jointed doll" Mantel then explains how that back in the

Compare And Contrast The Kings Speech And The King's Speech
Good afternoon class,
While watching the films, The King's Speech and A Beautiful Mind, a quote rang very true to me.
"One word frees us all the weight and pain of life. That word is love." This was quoted from a Greek
Playwright called Sophocles. In The King's Speech, Elizabeth fulfilled the role of being a supportive
partner to Bertie with ease, whereas in A Beautiful Mind, Alicia portrayed a realistic idea of the
trauma experienced when a loved one is suffering from a mental illness. By comparing the two
characters and referring to filmic techniques we will be able to see the factors that affected each
women's life and the way they handled and overcame the circumstances that they and their families
experienced.
Both Elizabeth and Alicia showed unconditional love and support for their husbands. However, their
body language, expressions and interactions with each man were different from one another. In the
image below, Elizabeth maintained physical contact with Bertie and was shot in the same frame
after he stuttered during his Speech. This displayed Elizabeth's character as being the strong
foundation in the relationship. From scene one, she showed her protective side by ... Show more

If their husbands didn't achieve what they did with their help, the consequences would have been a
lot worse for Alicia than Elizabeth. As you can see in the image, Alicia's marriage, family and
wellbeing would have been ruined because she would have lost Nash to his illness, raise her son as a
single mother and not live a happy and fulfilling life. On the other hand, if Bertie had not been able
to complete his responsibilities and allowed the microphone that he had to speak in be a barrier, they
would have still been the royal family. Elizabeth's marriage to Bertie was not under pressure and
they were not in a position of becoming poor if he had to abdicate as King. The only people that
would have suffered was the people of the United

Born on July 1, 1961, Diana Spencer had no clue of the life she would someday live. Diana grew up
as the daughter of the Viscount and Viscountess of Althorp. However, they divorced 8 years after
Diana's birth. Diana lived with her father and attended preparatory school in Norfolk. She then went
on to attend West Heath Girls' School in Kent, where she failed her O–level exams. She dropped out
of West Heath and her father sent her to a finishing school in Switzerland. Before she left England

At the time, most American didn't take much notice of the monarchy, but for Diana they did. Other
women saw her as an inspiration because of how she went through things normal women went
through, like her divorce. Even her death affected people across the world because of their strong
connection to her. Pati Nies said, "I was in Las Vegas when her death was announced and I felt as
sad and touched as I did the day President John Kennedy's death was announced. Her drive and
causes were an inspiration to me." Suicide rates went up 44% in the first week after Diana's death.
Some people admitted that they had been in mourning longer for Diana than their own parents.
Diana's influence is still visible in the way the remaining members of the royal family now conduct
themselves. Most obvious are during the Paralympics, Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and the
London 2012 Summer Olympics. These events are less formal. Also the monarchy is now seen to be
more approachable than before Diana came along. I believe this is due to the level of intimacy the
public had with Diana and after her death they felt they had the job of watching out for her sons.
This made them not look as William and Harry as princes in line for the throne, but more as little
boys that lost their mom. Sadly, one way Diana did not influence the United Kingdom is how the
paparazzi act. Her death may have been caused by their desperate need to get her picture but today

Edward Wallis Research Paper
In 1936, England's King George V died, leaving his eldest son, the Prince of Wales, to succeed him
as Edward VIII. The forty–one–year–old new King had been known as an especially womanizing
prince and he was still unmarried when he assumed the throne on January 20, 1936. His reign lasted
a mere 325 days, ending in December the same year when he abdicated. He was succeeded by his
brother, who became George VI, father of the current reigning monarch, Elizabeth II. Edward is
perhaps best known for abdicating the throne in order to marry the woman he loved, the American
Wallis Warfield Simpson from Baltimore, Maryland. Wallis had been divorced from her first
husband in 1927 and she was married to her second husband, Ernest Simpson, when she and ...

Williams and Mort briefly mention that the marriage was largely supported by Americans, but
neither go into great detail. Williams's monograph includes information on Edward and Wallis's
early lives, how they met, and their deaths. The vast majority of the text focuses on the couple
during abdication crisis of 1936: Williams details the divorce of Wallis and Ernest, the King's
decision to marry Wallis, and the process of the abdication. While Williams did provide a few
examples of American headlines showing support for the marriage, she did not explore American
opinion of the marriage in depth. Instead, she used this mention of the American press to redirect
focus onto the agreement the British press made with the King to avoid mention of the relationship.
Mort, in his article, looks at letters to the king, primarily from women (some of whom were
Americans) expressing empathy for his situation, to consider public opinion on the monarchy, with
the aim of determining how public perception of the monarchy was changed by Edward VIII's short
reign and its dramatic end. Both of these authors do note the role the media had in public opinion on
the King's affair, but neither explore it in

Assignment 2 – Gorgeous George blows fans away
Royals or readable?
Introduction
Photojournalism is used to represent a news story through a singular/series of images. The images
are selected to depict both content and tone, acting as an anchor to the event/story. An anchor is used
to provide stability or confidence in an otherwise uncertain situation, it narrows down the obtainable
readings that can be made on an image. On the 8th of April 2014 the Dominon post printed and
dispatched this front page article of the royal family on their arrival to Wellington NZ; 'Gorgeous

The Contribution Of Albert And Victoria 's Popularity
At first Albert was not popular with the British public because he was a foreign prince; however that
soon change when he became more involve with his new country such as taking on a growing
number of chairmanship such as the Royal Society of Arts and was active in exercising his role.
Albert was also fascinated by science, the arts, technology, trade, and industry, and he was
wholeheartedly committed to modernity and progress. His bourgeoning portfolio of non–political
interests and activities helped to divert attention from his political role and the criticism it was
bound to attract in which he became popular and was best remembered The Great Exhibition of
1851 that enhanced Britain's greatness. Albert and Victoria's popularity soared and enhanced
because of their calm composure when they were the target of two attempted assassination attacks
when she was pregnant in 1840 and 1841. They were both popular in the fact that Victoria was the
first sovereign not to go to Parliament every time she ran into debt, however she was never in debt.
Albert took advice from his private secretary and had already begun to make money for the Queen,
investing in savings in land and on the stock market that established the basis of the royal family's
private fortune. By royal and even aristocratic standards, Victoria and Albert's marriage was a very
domestic one. In the daily life of the royal family, Albert was expected to fulfill the normal role of

The first stanza shows the fall of England's rose and to all the people who loves Diana after hearing
the instance. Apparently, Diana never expect to be included in the royal family at first. It was fate
which makes a way for her and Prince Charles to meet each other. The two fall in love, but fate
becomes unkind to her suddenly when she found out unexpectedly two days before their wedding a
bracelet that Charles had made for Camilla Parker Bowles, Charles long time mistress. "I can't
marry him, I can't do this" Diana told her sister, "Well, bad luck, Duch they quipped. Your face is on

this marriage, so it was a bit crowded." Diana refused to accept the affair of Prince Charles to
Camilla, whom she called "The Rottweiler." Diana finally decided to have divorced with Prince
Charles. Prime Minister John Major formally announced the separation of the Prince and Princess of

rebellious, mischievous, approachable, and touchingly vulnerable. It is not a surprised that Diana is

An Image is Worth a Million Words
A picture represents a moment in history that cannot be authentically recreated. To catch an action,
an image, or an emotion by film is truly a special gift and one which most people take for granted.
For an image to capture a moment that simultaneously speaks for one person, a nation, and a cause
is really "worth a thousand words" as Neil Postman puts it (515), even a million. It is irreplaceable
by anything other than understanding, appreciation, and wonder. Three memorable photographs that
embody these assets are those of five members of the British Royal Family walking behind Princess

Yet perhaps the most moving expressions were on the faces of Princess Diana's sons, Prince William
and Prince Harry, whose beloved mother was suddenly taken from them a few short days before. It
is clear that the shock seemed almost unbearable to these young boys who were now lost because
the center of their world, their mother, was dead. People around the world were able to share the
pain and sadness of the members of Princess Diana's family through their expressions,
unequivocally portrayed by that one photograph. Furthermore, in his article "'By Means of the
Visible': A Picture's Worth," Mitchell Stephens explains what makes pictures so powerful in
conveying emotion by stating, "[. . . ] words [ . . .] must work hard to tell us what a glance could
about the expression on that face" (481). In addition to showing the feelings of the British Royal
Family, this photograph is a symbol that shows the world that, while Princess Diana is dead
physically, she will forever be alive in the memories of her people. Her impact on society will never
be forgotten and neither will the courage and strength in the faces of those men that touched the

Diana: Queen of Hearts
Princess Diana was the most cherished and beloved royal family member of all time. Many may
think this was because of her elegance and beauty; after all, she was a fashion icon. However, her
vulnerability was the source of her charm. She connected with ordinary people because she dealt
with a lifetime of struggles, which she overcame briefly before her death at the young age of thirty–
six.
Diana Spencer was born on July 1, 1964 in Sandringham, Norfolk in the United Kingdom. Her
name was one of nobility, and it would one day become one of royalty (Childhood and Teenage
Years). The future Princess of Wales was born into a privileged family, though not a family immune

Princess Diana Eulogy Analysis
On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana died in a fatal car crash while in Paris. Her funeral was held on
September 6, 1997, at Westminster Abbey in London, England. Thousands of people attended, while
many more watched from their homes. A few of her family members spoke great things about her;
however, the eulogy her brother wrote shocked the millions that were watching. According to the
Merriam–Webster Dictionary a eulogy is a commendatory oration or writing especially in honor of
one deceased (Merriam–Webster Dictionary). This eulogy written for Princess Diana had many
factors that set it apart from typical eulogies, but these aspects made it more effective.
A typical eulogy consists of praise, happy memories, stories, and positive personality features of the
one deceased. In opposition, this particular eulogy had a negative tone regarding the sadness in her
life, as well as blaming the royal family and the paparazzi for her untimely passing. This eulogy
used aspects that most speeches, essays, and other forms of writing use, including pathos, ethos,
logos, parallelism, imagery, and negative comments toward her unfortunate loss of life.
Earl used pathos to appeal to the audience's emotions. He used it to draw the audience in, and get
their attention by talking about family. An example of pathos from the eulogy is, "These were days I

Wallis Simpson Essay
American socialite Wallis Simpson, the woman for whom Edward VIII gave up the throne in 1936,
is variously portrayed as a greedy snob, a sexual predator or part of the romance of the century. A
complex figure emerges: a strong–willed woman, hungry for independence, but caught up in a
situation she could not control. Mrs. Wallis Simpson has become an emotional figure in history.
Along with this, many descriptions of her personality and motives for being with Edward have

This time Wallis left him for good and sued for a divorce, which was granted in December 1927.
After three years of separation divorced, Wallis began an affair with a married man, Ernest Simpson,
a British–American businessman. They wed in July 1928. They moved to London, where Wallis
established herself as a hostess. Through contacts at the US Embassy she became friendly with
Thelma Furness, who was married to an elderly shipping magnate and involved with Prince Edward
– the future Edward VIII. "I really feel so tired of fighting the world all alone and with no

Wales, at a house party given by his mistress, Lady Thelma Furness, at Melton Mowbray in
Leicestershire. He was charming, the most eligible bachelor in the world; she was married, at 35 no

Furness left England to visit her sister, Gloria Vanderbilt. When she returned three months later,
Wallis had taken her place as Edward's closest friend. By 1934, the prince was a frequent visitor to

Diana, Princess of Wales, held the heart and attention of millions of people. She was known as the "
People's Princess" across her country and the world (Morton 10). Behind all the flashing lights and

The Role Of Gender And Gender Inequality In Ancient Greece
From ancient times the woman was perceived and acknowledged as inferior to men. The female
element in ancient Greece was a significant part of the procreation and a form of entertainment. For
example, the hierarchical character of Aristotle has played an significant role in reducing the
women's value and role in society. The intended purpose of the female gender was to be a keeper, to
clean and cook while the male was the provider with less emotions. However, this socially
structured vision is strongly based on gendered appearance without questioning the confines of the
self expansion and individuality.
Performing gender has been habitually implemented on daily basis perhaps until the first feminist
movement in the 1800s which lead society to question gender inequality and androcentrism.
Furthermore, identity has been ingrained in the royal family through performed gender and iteration
of act serves to perpetually reproduce. But is gender only a narrative which fortify expectations and
stereotypes of what means to be a male or female?
The princess of Wales, Diana Spencer is a quintessential example of the blending genders in modern
society and brought a new life to the Monarchy.
She has made a significant change in our perception and her character contained every attribute that
a role model should exhibit.
Coming from an aristocratic family with initially a country girl like style, her identity transformed
into a sophisticated, honoured princess and beloved mother. With grace and style, Diana changed the
19th century anachronism of the British Monarchy to the attainable modern institution that it is
today. She was a representation of a supremely regal woman who stood by her husband's side hence,
independently continued to establish her identity alone after their divorce.
On daily basis, she had numerous roles and activities starting from a loving mother, inspiration to the
world, organizer of charities and many other royal duties. The Princess of Wales was not a puppet of
the Royal family, she had a determined personality to make a change for a better world. Her
compassion and hope played a core role in illustrating her social and political eminence.
In a way, she used the press to shape her own image

The Diana Phenomenon Essay
The Diana Phenomenon
The sudden death of Diana Princess of Wales at the end of August 1997 sparked off a massive
display of emotion in the world, especially in Britain. The event provided the opportunity for the
expression of what appeared to be a short–term and superficial, but undoubtedly sincere, manner by
a large number of people. "An emotion felt throughout the countryside was that many people saw
themselves in some way connected to this public figure and able to grieve for her as if she were an
acquaintance." (Lambert 54) However, there remained clear borderlines between what the public,
who thought they knew her, and the immediate family who did.

" 'We don't know" mourners said. "Our grief has surprised us, too. We didn't know how much we

Long ago, in 1981 to be exact, Diana Spencer retired her role as kindergarten teacher to become the
future queen of England. It was like a Cinderella story right out of the book. But this Cinderella's
skirts were plaid, and her hair was chopped short. She had a nervous giggle, and was the tiniest bit
plump. She was normal, she was regular, and everyone loved her for it. By the time she was 27
years old, she had been married for eight years and had two beautiful sons. The fairy tale appeared
to still be there, but what the press, who hounded her day and night, failed to catch was that her life
was in a downward spiral even after the short weeks she was married. She had been bulimic for
years, she had tried to kill herself, and she and Charles were living separate lives. "In her telling, the
marriage broke up because she'd had the impudence to demand a real relationship...in fairness to
Charles, he must have felt the fairy tale got all mixed up: He kissed the princess and became a frog."
(Gaines 98)
"Diana's enduring allure surprised everyone, including the princess herself. The public's obsession
with the smallest details of her smart clothes, her hair and her sons made royal family life far more
compelling and exploitable than any TV saga." (London) She loved to pick up babies, whether or

King Charles IIi By Mark Bartlett
I tremendously enjoyed the play King Charles III by Mark Bartlett. It dealt with the very modern
issues of privacy and the press through the medium of blank verse and the modern–day monarchs
with some Shakespearean precursors lurking in the background. Charles III opens just after the
death of Elizabeth II, and traces the remaining royals' actions and reactions through the next
coronation. We see Charles, attempting to follow his own moral compass, becoming embroiled in
politics He nearly destroys the monarchy by refusing to pass a bill that would censor certain types of
scandals out of the press, despite the bill having strong support in the House of Commons. Will and
Kate, the publicly popular and more politically savvy pair, pull strings (with questionable morality)
to keep the palace together, both for themselves and posterity. Prince Harry is off running around on
the town, drinking too much and continuing his famous shenanigans, until he meets and falls in love
with Jess, a republican who is strongly against the monarchy. One of Jess's previous boyfriends
threatens to release nude pictures of her to the gossip rags to extort money out of the royal family.
This problem could be easily solved by the passage of the bill in Parliament that Charles is still
blocking, even as he promises to protect Jess after meeting her. Harry contemplates leaving the royal
family to be with Jess, as she is staunchly opposed to everything royal, with the idea that some

Princess Diana As A Hero
Princess Diana is considered to be the most favored member of the Royal Family in the history of
the British Monarchy (biography.com editors 1). She is the former wife of Prince Charles, and the
mother of Princes William and Harry. Her charitable work with impoverished children has formed
her reputation as a role model for the people of Britain and much of the world. Much of Diana's life
has been devoted to traveling the world to help others. Her work in Africa with the children injured
by landmines brought her into the global spotlight (Wexford 3). Princess Diana was more than just a
public figure and royal, she was a loving person who brought light to social issues and cared for
those who are destitute. A hero, as defined in Webster's Online Dictionary, is a person who "a person
admired for achievements or noble qualities" or "one who shows great courage." However, a hero is
not just a person with outstanding achievements. A hero is a person who is philanthropic, generous,
and kind. Heros fight for those who cannot fight for themselves, and do not judge those who they
are fighting for. They are charitable in ways other than donating money, they give their time and
effort in order to make the lives of others more pleasant. Heros display bravery, as they are willing
to go into a dangerous situation to help others that have been aggrieved. Social pressures and
judgements do not affect a hero's willingness to help others, and they are willing to push through
what others say

Why Is Princess Diana Considered A Game Changer
What makes a person a game changer? A person is a game changer because of the way they believe
in a better world and try their best to help that world emerge. They want to make a change, they
inspire hope, show compassion, even if it is indirect, and they are loved. They would rather make a
difference than be in power. That is why Princess Diana is considered a game changer, she even
says: "I'd like to be a queen of people's hearts but I don't see myself being queen of this country."
Princess Diana is also considered a game changer because she changed the way that people viewed
the Royal Family; showed that even though one is rich, one can show compassion; and she raised

She raised her sons to love and inspire people. She showed them the motherly love that she herself
had not received and anyone in the Royal family has ever been shown. The author recounts, "Diana
kissed them and hugged them hard. Motherly love could hardly be clearer. Contrast that scene with a
similar situation a generation earlier. When Diana's mother–in–law, the Queen, returned from
foreign travel she would greet a young Charles with a handshake." (Owen 77) Diana loved her kids
more than anything in the world, even if her relationship with their father did not work out. She
knew she wanted to play a major role in how the young princes grew up, and she most definitely
did. Both of Diana's little princes show the "contradictory sides of their mother's personality."
(Owen 76) Harry is a charmer, like his mother, while William is sensitive and finds it challenging to
deal with the media attention. Both sides of their mother that each boy shows will be helpful to them
in the future with their different responsibilities. It also helps them because they both got
compassion and a strong instinct from their mother as well. "William and Harry were truly the
cornerstone of her life. So much so, it was wanting to be near them that kept her in Britain, when
other parts of the world without such intrusive media and tougher privacy laws, often seemed more
appealing to her." (Owen 77)

Rhetorical Analysis of Earl Spencer's Speech for the...
In this assignment, I will closely analyse the speech made by Earl Spencer for the funeral of Lady
Diana, considering the complicated context and literary devises he uses to affect his audience.
The speech was written as a funeral speech for Diana's close family and friends, but also, more
importantly, for the public, as it was broadcasted worldwide.
In the speech, although it's primary purpose is to pay respects to his sister; he uses the opportunity to
promote Diana's charity work, and to raise controversy within the royal family.
He never directly says it, but when analysing the text his feelings towards the royal family are
apparent; from the fact that he mentions, " she needed no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He uses lots of abstract nouns, to create an image of Diana e.g. "the very essence of compassion, of
duty, of style, of beauty." The group of four descriptive words emphasises these images. He also
uses metaphors, like "sparkle" which makes people think of light, a symbol of life and vitality.
He always refers to his sister as Diana, never as princess or Lady, which would be to formal, making
it sound less emotional; but also never as "Di", which would be to informal and personal for a
funeral speech aimed at so many.
Earl Spencer creates many contradicting images, which balance each other out. He often mentions
religious references, "God granted you but half a life", "God given", "rush to canonise". This creates
an angelic picture in the minds of the audience, which would seem exaggerated, but he also
describes Diana as a human. "Insecure person".
This balance between contradictory images, and suitably formal writing style helps to make the
speech so powerful.
He uses pronouns like "we", and "our" which unite the audience, making them feel like the whole
nation is grieving with them.
The pronouns shift, as he speaks to Diana herself, "you brightened our lives", then again, towards
then end of the speech, to "I". This makes it seem like he is releasing his own personal emotions,
showing the side of Diana he knew. These changes in pronouns not only change

It was shock to society. Diana believes the tension put on her mother to produce a boy is when the
marriage began to break down. The separation caused a custody battle over the children. This was
very disruptive to the four children. After the legal battle their father eventually received custody
due to his title and nobility. Diana's mother remarried one month after the divorce was settled to
Peter Shand Kydd. The trauma of divorce may have been the cause of what led to Diana's eating
disorders of anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Diana's oldest sister, Sarah, also suffered the same eating
disorders. These diseases are linked to mother and daughter relationships, anxiety and a
malfunctioning family. Diana's parents would fight endlessly and the children would overhear their
fights. The four children were cared for primarily by nannies. They went through many nannies in
their childhood. This led to a cool relationship with both parents and affection from them was non–
existent. The children even ate their meals with their nannies. Holiday's were spent shuffled between
the two parents. Diana's father buried himself in his work while her mother was only allowed to see
them on the weekends. In all, the Spencer children had a very unstable and loveless childhood.
Diana says all she craved were cuddles and kisses. Diana learned from an early age to put a smile on
her face when family life at home was troublesome. From early on, Diana had a maternal instinct.

Princess Diana was known as the "people's princess" who stunned the world with her ability to

Argumentative Essay On Invasive Beauty
Reality of a Real Life Princess
On August 31st, 1997, Princess Diana's death from a fatal car crash left the world stunned. Paparazzi
that were later sighted as the main cause of the crash were among the first to arrive on the scene of
Diana's death, making apparent how invasive news and media can be for people especially the royal
family. In Banksy's exhibit "Dismaland",which itself is a play on "Disneyland", one can find a
sculpture of Cinderella hunched over a crashed pumpkin carriage, under a tunnel, only illuminated

Moreover the annual cost of around £37 million is good value for money. In any case, Monarchy is
meant to be majestic, yet there seems to be a deliberate move to diminish the majesty of the
Monarchy. So long as the Monarch remains a symbol of the nation, then no expense should be
spared. A nation which values itself will treat its national icons with prestige and respect.
In addition The Monarch is a national icon. An icon which cannot be replaced adequately by any
other politician or personality. This is because the British Monarchy embodies British history and
identity in all its aspects, both good and bad. When you see the Queen you not only see history since

The portrait of the British royal family "Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with Five of Their
Children" was painted by a German painter named Franz Xaver Winterhal. He was widely known
for his beautiful and elaborated portraits of royal women. The portrait of Queen Victoria and her
family is Wintergal's less well–known portrait, but it is still very detailed image. In the artwork, the
queen and the prince are centered with their children surrounding them. Both are dressed in
exquisite formal wear decorated with a blue sash across their chest. Next to Queen Victoria is the
young prince dressed in red garment, who is looking at Prince Albert. On the right side of Prince
Albert are two of their daughters dressed in white dresses who are peering over an infant that is
staring at something. While in front of the queen and prince is another girl that is trying to walk. In
the background of the painting, it shows an open backdrop revealing a cloudy, blue sky with an
ocean that stretches out in the distance. Although this painting is not well–known, it still portrays a
sense of understanding of the royal family. In the same context, all paintings or artworks holds its
very own importance depending on the eye of the beholder looking at the artwork, as it will be
interpret by what knowledge they have obtained.
Even though, it is merely a family portrait, this artwork reveals a hidden meaning about the royal
family and their interaction with each other. The artwork portrays the

Princess Diana
Snap, click followed by dozens of flashing lights. Diana Spencer got out of her vehicle to go to one
of her many charity organizations. Everyday Lady Spencer had to deal with the public. Lady Diana
Francis Spencer led a privileged background. She was born on July 1, 1961. She was supposed to be
a boy. But boy were her parents in for a surprise. Diana grew up at Park House in Norfolk. In 1967,
When Diana was six, her parents separated. Eventually they were divorced and both of them went
on to marry again. Diana and the other children found this very difficult. They saw their mother, but
continued to live with their father. A series of nannies took care of them when they were not at
boarding school. From the age of six, Diana went to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Diana had known the Prince as a child, but not very well, he was 12 years older than she, and lately
Diana had thought of him only as her sister Sarah's friend. That weekend, Charles noticed Diana.
Later he remembered her as "a very jolly, amusing, and attractive 16 year old, full of fun." As time
passed, they got to know each other better. In mid–1980 rumors began to spread that Charles and
Diana were about to get engaged. So many media reporters pestered Diana to know the truth. On
February 24, 1981, the world was let in on the secret. It was announced that Charles, now 31, and
Diana, 19, were to marry. After the announcement, Diana moved out of her apartment. First she
moved to Clarence House, the Queen Mother's London home, then into Buckingham Palace. There
she was better protected from the media who hounded her day in and day out. The wedding was
planned for July 29, 1981. Massive preparations had to be made for this huge public event. Diana
also had to prepare herself for becoming the Princess of Wales in 71 years. After July 29, she would
be the third most important woman in Great Britain, after only the Queen and the Queen Mother.
How was the former kindergarten helper going to cope? What, exactly, would she be expected to
do? First and foremost, she would have to give birth to a male heir for Prince Charles, a son who
would one day become King himself. She would also have to accompany Charles on his various
appearances in

Princess Diana Impact Of Beauty
"Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one
day someone might do the same for you" (Diana, Princess of Wales). Princess Diana was one of the
world's most beloved and recognizable figures. Diana exemplified beauty and style, yet she was
more than a pretty face as she changed the way the public looks at modern monarchies through her
humanitarian efforts and down to earth approach.
Diana's life seemed like a charmed one. She was the daughter of nobility chosen to marry the Prince
of England. "Diana, Princess of Wales, 1961–97, was wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, heir to the
British throne. The daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer, Lady Diana Frances Spencer was a
kindergarten teacher in London before her 1981 marriage to Charles" (Princess of Wales, Diana).
Diana was chosen specifically for her youth and beauty so that she could produce attractive and
healthy offspring for the British monarchy. They needed a male heir and a spare. She delivered on
her end of the deal when William was born in 1982, and Harry, in 1994 (Princess of Wales, Diana).
Diana was supposed to do whatever she was told by the royal family, and produce sons. Her
personal happiness was not a factor. Her husband had an ongoing affair with his long time love
Camilla Parker–Bowles during most of his marriage to Diana. They fought constantly, and it didn't
help that she often stole the spotlight with her effortless grace and beauty.

Queen Margaret's Dramatic Force

  • 1. Queen Margaret Critical Analysis Queen Margaret: The Portrait of Fortune's Fool Through advancing the play's dramatic, thematic and political growth, Queen Margaret is a force to be reckoned with in William Shakespeare's Richard III. She affects the play dramatically through creating foreshadowing and contributing to Richard's character development. Thematically, Margaret deepens the play's central views by demonstrating the wheel of fortune's merciless nature, the futility of human prowess against fate's plans, and that conscience is a dangerous device. By contrast, Margaret holds little political influence throughout Richard III, due to her fallen status. Her impact in instigating these developments is crucial to the play as a whole, and throws the concept of guilt, fate, and divine knowledge into question. It is expected that Queen Margaret – a former queen of England, cast aside by the York family after her husband's death – holds almost no political power in the play. Her lack of influence successfully highlights the play's undertones focused on powerless female suffering, matching the misogynistic views dominant in Elizabethan society. Margaret's voice is oppressed by others, evident when Richard scoffs, "Foul wrinkled witch, what mak'st thou in my sight?" (1.3.162– 163). Margaret has reached rock bottom; she is viewed as a pariah, serving as nothing more than a nuisance. Therefore, her pathetic standing with the court exhibits her loss of political influence, exemplified further when Margaret ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Royal Bodies Royal Bodies "Royal Bodies" is a speech by Hilary Mantel, an award winning and bestselling English writer. Hilary Mantel, born in 1952, is particularly famous for her historical novels. On February 21 2013, at a book lecture at the British Museum, she held a speech, in which she commented on the British monarchy. Hilary Mantel starts her speech by telling how she, last summer, was asked to name a famous person and choose a book to give them. She chose Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, "a jointed doll on which certain rags are hung". This is a good way to start the speech because Hilary Mantel has now introduced her real purpose with the speech: to discuss the effect of monarchy. Hilary tells how she at a book trade event at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this quote she indicates that the royal family are like trapped caged animals that the public never really know, and that that is something perhaps to be regretted. The royal family is, according to Hilary, a thing that is expensive to conserve, but interesting to look at and that is also the only reason that they exist. Today monarchy has become an attraction, which flashes every side of the royal family. Hilary Mantel believes that we are looking at royalties as if they were figures or dolls, who we can treat as we want to. We always have a comment to what they are wearing, if they look good or not, what they are doing right or wrong etc. We are allowing monarchy to treat its persons as entertainment objects. "I'm not asking for censorship. I'm not asking for pious humbug and smarmy reverence. I'm asking us to back off not be brutes". In this quote Hilary says that we need to stand back, and this is clearly her goal with her speech. We need to allow the royalties to be humans as well. Hilary Mantel's speech is tendentious and personal, because only one her own opinion is presented. Looked at the speech objectively it is weak because of the lack of proof, since she is only arguing with her own personal opinion. In the speech there is an illustration of Paul Emsley's portrait of Kate Middleton. She describes it like this: "But in her first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Kings Speech : A Film Adaptation Of A True Story The 2010 critically acclaimed film "The Kings Speech" aimed to showcase the struggles of King George VI as he dealt with his stammer and becoming King. The tale follows the King along with his therapist Lionel Logue, as they try and find the best way to cope with the issue before the Kings first wartime radio broadcast. Although this movie is just a film adaptation of a true story, it is still able to show the viewer a lot about British Culture during the 1920's, which has even carried into the modern day. Additionally, "The Kings Speech" reveals the importance of saving face as well as power distance within the United Kingdom. At the beginning of the movie, the relationship between Lionel, and King George VI, (who is referred to, as Bertie throughout), is weak. This may be due to the fact that many place special treatment on him because of his Royal namesake. When Lionel and Bertie first met, Lionel made sure not to sit too close and waited for the prince to choose a topic of conversation. This reveals that the Royal family plays a big role in British culture. They place a lot of emphases as well as respect on them, and they are very much a part of their lives. The emphasis on the royal family and the fact that this movie was even created about King George VI suggests that British culture puts a lot of value on their history. They are very much about keeping tradition and sharing their history, which is why they created a film doing just that. When a royal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Speech On The Royal Family A fairy tale is in every little girls dream. The handsome prince followed by a magical wedding with the perfect gown that will blow everyone's mind away. For some this will always stay a dream and for others they will simply grow up to realise that nothing is like the fairy tales. Yes, the kingdom does exist and probably will for a long amount of time. But it is nothing like it has been and will never be again. In our modern days is democracy and modern warfare valid. Thereby does the royal family have a smaller participation, then there have been in history. It can be argued if one would even consider that the monarchy have any actual power left. These days the royal family is simply a portrait of a long line of nationalistic tradition. They are more likely considered famous people who have duties such as attending fashion shows, giving the annual New Year's speech, making sure to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 13. Compare And Contrast The Kings Speech And The King's Speech Good afternoon class, While watching the films, The King's Speech and A Beautiful Mind, a quote rang very true to me. "One word frees us all the weight and pain of life. That word is love." This was quoted from a Greek Playwright called Sophocles. In The King's Speech, Elizabeth fulfilled the role of being a supportive partner to Bertie with ease, whereas in A Beautiful Mind, Alicia portrayed a realistic idea of the trauma experienced when a loved one is suffering from a mental illness. By comparing the two characters and referring to filmic techniques we will be able to see the factors that affected each women's life and the way they handled and overcame the circumstances that they and their families experienced. Both Elizabeth and Alicia showed unconditional love and support for their husbands. However, their body language, expressions and interactions with each man were different from one another. In the image below, Elizabeth maintained physical contact with Bertie and was shot in the same frame after he stuttered during his Speech. This displayed Elizabeth's character as being the strong foundation in the relationship. From scene one, she showed her protective side by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand, if Bertie had not been able to complete his responsibilities and allowed the microphone that he had to speak in be a barrier, they would have still been the royal family. Diana grew up as the daughter of the Viscount and Viscountess of Althorp. However, they divorced 8 years after Diana's birth. Diana lived with her father and attended preparatory school in Norfolk. She then went on to attend West Heath Girls' School in Kent, where she failed her O–level exams. She dropped out of West Heath and her father sent her to a finishing school in Switzerland. Before she left England for school, she met Prince Charles through mutual friends. Once she returned home from Switzerland, she and her family visited Prince Charles and his family at the castle in Scotland. This started their "royal romance." Their wedding in 1981 was one for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the time, most American didn't take much notice of the monarchy, but for Diana they did. Other women saw her as an inspiration because of how she went through things normal women went through, like her divorce. Even her death affected people across the world because of their strong connection to her. Pati Nies said, "I was in Las Vegas when her death was announced and I felt as sad and touched as I did the day President John Kennedy's death was announced. Her drive and causes were an inspiration to me." Suicide rates went up 44% in the first week after Diana's death. Some people admitted that they had been in mourning longer for Diana than their own parents. Diana's influence is still visible in the way the remaining members of the royal family now conduct themselves. Most obvious are during the Paralympics, Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and the London 2012 Summer Olympics. These events are less formal. Also the monarchy is now seen to be more approachable than before Diana came along. I believe this is due to the level of intimacy the public had with Diana and after her death they felt they had the job of watching out for her sons. This made them not look as William and Harry as princes in line for the throne, but more as little boys that lost their mom. Sadly, one way Diana did not influence the United Kingdom is how the paparazzi act. Her death may have been caused by their desperate need to get her picture but today their ruthlessness is ... The forty–one–year–old new King had been known as an especially womanizing prince and he was still unmarried when he assumed the throne on January 20, 1936. His reign lasted a mere 325 days, ending in December the same year when he abdicated. He was succeeded by his brother, who became George VI, father of the current reigning monarch, Elizabeth II. Edward is perhaps best known for abdicating the throne in order to marry the woman he loved, the American Wallis Warfield Simpson from Baltimore, Maryland. Williams and Mort briefly mention that the marriage was largely supported by Americans, but neither go into great detail. Williams's monograph includes information on Edward and Wallis's early lives, how they met, and their deaths. The vast majority of the text focuses on the couple during abdication crisis of 1936: Williams details the divorce of Wallis and Ernest, the King's decision to marry Wallis, and the process of the abdication. While Williams did provide a few examples of American headlines showing support for the marriage, she did not explore American opinion of the marriage in depth. Instead, she used this mention of the American press to redirect focus onto the agreement the British press made with the King to avoid mention of the relationship. Mort, in his article, looks at letters to the king, primarily from women (some of whom were Americans) expressing empathy for his situation, to consider public opinion on the monarchy, with the aim of determining how public perception of the monarchy was changed by Edward VIII's short reign and its dramatic end. Thousands of people attended, while many more watched from their homes. A few of her family members spoke great things about her; however, the eulogy her brother wrote shocked the millions that were watching. According to the Merriam–Webster Dictionary a eulogy is a commendatory oration or writing especially in honor of one deceased (Merriam–Webster Dictionary). This eulogy written for Princess Diana had many factors that set it apart from typical eulogies, but these aspects made it more effective. A typical eulogy consists of praise, happy memories, stories, and positive personality features of the one deceased. In opposition, this particular eulogy had a negative tone regarding the sadness in her life, as well as blaming the royal family and the paparazzi for her untimely passing. This eulogy used aspects that most speeches, essays, and other forms of writing use, including pathos, ethos, logos, parallelism, imagery, and negative comments toward her unfortunate loss of life. Earl used pathos to appeal to the audience's emotions. He used it to draw the audience in, and get their attention by talking about family. • 41. The Role Of Gender And Gender Inequality In Ancient Greece From ancient times the woman was perceived and acknowledged as inferior to men. The female element in ancient Greece was a significant part of the procreation and a form of entertainment. For example, the hierarchical character of Aristotle has played an significant role in reducing the women's value and role in society. The intended purpose of the female gender was to be a keeper, to clean and cook while the male was the provider with less emotions. However, this socially structured vision is strongly based on gendered appearance without questioning the confines of the self expansion and individuality. Performing gender has been habitually implemented on daily basis perhaps until the first feminist movement in the 1800s which lead society to question gender inequality and androcentrism. Furthermore, identity has been ingrained in the royal family through performed gender and iteration of act serves to perpetually reproduce. But is gender only a narrative which fortify expectations and stereotypes of what means to be a male or female? The princess of Wales, Diana Spencer is a quintessential example of the blending genders in modern society and brought a new life to the Monarchy. She has made a significant change in our perception and her character contained every attribute that a role model should exhibit. Coming from an aristocratic family with initially a country girl like style, her identity transformed into a sophisticated, honoured princess and beloved mother. With grace and style, Diana changed the 19th century anachronism of the British Monarchy to the attainable modern institution that it is today. She was a representation of a supremely regal woman who stood by her husband's side hence, independently continued to establish her identity alone after their divorce. On daily basis, she had numerous roles and activities starting from a loving mother, inspiration to the world, organizer of charities and many other royal duties. It dealt with the very modern issues of privacy and the press through the medium of blank verse and the modern–day monarchs with some Shakespearean precursors lurking in the background. Charles III opens just after the death of Elizabeth II, and traces the remaining royals' actions and reactions through the next coronation. We see Charles, attempting to follow his own moral compass, becoming embroiled in politics He nearly destroys the monarchy by refusing to pass a bill that would censor certain types of scandals out of the press, despite the bill having strong support in the House of Commons. Will and Kate, the publicly popular and more politically savvy pair, pull strings (with questionable morality) to keep the palace together, both for themselves and posterity. She is the former wife of Prince Charles, and the mother of Princes William and Harry. Her charitable work with impoverished children has formed her reputation as a role model for the people of Britain and much of the world. Much of Diana's life has been devoted to traveling the world to help others. Her work in Africa with the children injured by landmines brought her into the global spotlight (Wexford 3). They are charitable in ways other than donating money, they give their time and effort in order to make the lives of others more pleasant. • 55. Rhetorical Analysis of Earl Spencer's Speech for the... In this assignment, I will closely analyse the speech made by Earl Spencer for the funeral of Lady Diana, considering the complicated context and literary devises he uses to affect his audience. The speech was written as a funeral speech for Diana's close family and friends, but also, more importantly, for the public, as it was broadcasted worldwide. In the speech, although it's primary purpose is to pay respects to his sister; he uses the opportunity to promote Diana's charity work, and to raise controversy within the royal family. He never directly says it, but when analysing the text his feelings towards the royal family are apparent; from the fact that he mentions, " she needed no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He uses lots of abstract nouns, to create an image of Diana e.g. "the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty." The group of four descriptive words emphasises these images. He also uses metaphors, like "sparkle" which makes people think of light, a symbol of life and vitality. He always refers to his sister as Diana, never as princess or Lady, which would be to formal, making it sound less emotional; but also never as "Di", which would be to informal and personal for a funeral speech aimed at so many. Earl Spencer creates many contradicting images, which balance each other out. He often mentions religious references, "God granted you but half a life", "God given", "rush to canonise". This creates an angelic picture in the minds of the audience, which would seem exaggerated, but he also describes Diana as a human. "Insecure person". This balance between contradictory images, and suitably formal writing style helps to make the speech so powerful. He uses pronouns like "we", and "our" which unite the audience, making them feel like the whole nation is grieving with them. The pronouns shift, as he speaks to Diana herself, "you brightened our lives", then again, towards then end of the speech, to "I". This makes it seem like he is releasing his own personal emotions, showing the side of Diana he knew. These changes in pronouns not only change
