Gum Ball Math-Adding, Subtracting, & Fractions (Part to Whole)
INTRODUCTION
 Target Students: 4th Graders - Mathematics
 How to Support Universal Design: The students will be actively engaged, they will be
working with partners and by themselves, they will be using their brains to problem
solve, and they will be constantly given new problems and relate them to their own
lives.
 How I would Use the Resource: I would use the resource by using their design of a
gumball machine; I believe this is useful because most students have seen one and
can understand and count the balls easier because they are confined in a container.
I could also adapt this by providing a real life gumball machine for those students
who enjoy working with a real object as opposed to an animated one.
TASK(S)
 The task for this assignment is to better equip students with the ability to add and subtract as
well as introduce them to the idea of fractions and being part of a whole.
ACTIVITY/PROCESS
 The students will be shown multiple slides on the smart board with a gumball machine.
They will add up each color and the total number of balls to start with and then gradually
move into fractions such as there are 3 red gumballs and 12 total, what is the fraction of
red gumballs? (3/12 or ¼)
