1. Project Based Learning
& Common Core State Standards
Dr. Charles Young
Sharing my
personal learning network
(PLN)
2. Project components
• This assignment focuses on my personal learning
network with resources I need to help lead
implementation of the Common Core and Project
Based Learning (PBL).
• I selected 3 types of resources: blogs, Twitter and
videos.
• In total, I selected 13 connections because I was so
interested in broadening my understanding that I
wanted more than the required 5.
3. Resource #1 –
Blogs
• Connections Within the Resource – Why Selected
The Teaching Channel – The Teacher’s Voice blog has several topics written by
individual authors on a variety of Common Core and Project Based Learning
(PBL) themes and areas of expertise.
EduTopia – Edutopia has many educator blogs but this one focuses solely on the
real world and complex concepts in Project Based Learning.
Buck Institute for Learning – The Experts & NewBIEs blog contains focused
conversations around Project Based Learning by the experts from Buck.
4. Resource #2 –
Twitter
• Connections Within the Resource – Why Selected
@LeadAndLearn – This twitter feed provides resources and discussions to move the
work from knowledge to practical application which is critical for the move to Common
Core and PBL
@LearningForward – I’m at the Learning Forward Conference and the sharing around
professional learning resources applies to the Common Core and PBL. Great stuff
shared here (and I’ve been tweeting here too)
@SchettinoPBL – This professor is a PBL expert regularly discussing PBL connections
@jgough – This teacher has over
1000 followers and focuses on
PBL linked with assessment
#pblchat – When I put in this
hashtag, I am able to find
conversations on Project Based
Learning
5. Resource #3 –
VIDEOS
• Connections Within the Resource – Why Selected
Buck Institute of Learning – I selected the video section from BIE because it has solid
examples to share with teachers and stakeholders about what PBL looks like.
YouTube – The videos on YouTube are great for sharing PBL (and Common Core). BIE
has its own YouTube channel.
EngageNY – This “Race to the Top” and “Gates Foundation” funded state has great
videos to help districts implement the Common Core and I can use this with our
leaders and teachers.
The Common Core Implementation Series – Great videos created by The Hunt Institute
on many themes around the Common Core – Math, ELA, teacher leaders, the “why”,
etc.
The Teaching Channel – This website is all about videos to help educators with
concepts to be mastered in the Common Core. When you create an account, you also
receive a weekly email on some relevant Common Core topic.
