I sit on the board of directors of the Diamond Bar Community Foundation (DBCF), a civic group that engages in activities that serve the residents of the Southern California city of Diamond Bar. A nonprofit organization, DBCF upholds a mission statement that involves the promotion of cultural events, preservation of the region’s history, and enhancement of quality of life. DBCF seeks to encourage diversity and community-building through these activities. One of the principal activities of DBCF involves fundraising. DBCF has supported arts, culture, and recreational programs; in addition, 2009 was a record year for the organization, with over $21,000 in donations. These donations go toward the grant programs of DBCF, which are awarded to school music groups at the K-16 levels. No grants are offered to individuals or to political groups. The maximum grant amount is $2,500, distributed biannually in March and September. Application deadlines are January 31 and July 31, respectively. To apply, an organization must write a proposal outlining what it intends to do with the funds and who will be served by the project. DBCF also organizes a number of events for children, in accordance with the City of Diamond Bar Youth Master Plan. Included in this project is the establishment of a youth leadership board known as DB for Youth, made up of child and teen representatives of various ages, ethnic backgrounds, and socioeconomic standings. DBCF, in conjunction with the youth leadership board, has hosted two events so far: Las Vegas Stars of Magic, a dance for youth in grades 6, 7, and 8; and Teen Night Out, an outdoor event featuring laser tag, a DJ, and carnival games.
