Merit Task: Explain the development of techniques and purposes of editing
Explain how Tarantino and Nolan are influenced by their Auteur predecessors - how have
they used the techniques of the Montage (Eisenstein) and Discontinuity (French New
Wave) as well as Continuity (Griffiths, Porter).
Explain the purpose of the techniques used in the clips (manipulation of time and space,
following the action, creating motivation, rhythm/tempo/pace) with specific examples
Explain why Montage, and Discontinuity techniques are used in the films of Tarantino and
Nolan referring to detailed examples (clips) – what does this bring to Hollywood?

3. Distinction Task: Compare and assess the development of editing principles and
techniques
Evaluate the extent that Montage and New Wave discontinuity editing has lost it's meaning
over its stylistic use?
Conclude how Hollywood Continuity's dominance has absorbed these alternative
approaches (Montage, Discontinuity) to editing in favour of style, storytelling and
