Key Difference – Charismatic vs Transformational Leadership
Charismatic leadership and Transformational leadership are two important classifications of leadership between which a key difference can be identified. When speaking of leadership as a whole, this has a deep history. Leadership creates an ambiance for both change and also resistance to change. When focusing on the two leadership styles, the key difference is that while in Charismatic Leadership the leader’s charm and attraction create inspiration and devotion among the followers towards the leader, in Transformational Leadership, change in individuals and social systems are created through a collective vision. This article attempts to clarify the difference between these two terms in detail.
What is Charismatic Leadership?
Charisma is a gift in view of most people. Charisma is the attraction or charm of a person that can inspire devotion in others. So, arguing it as a gift has some truth. Leadership of this nature can be termed as Charismatic Leadership, where people are inspired to work for the leader based on their devotion towards that individual. Charismatic leaders have followers who admire the leader’s charm and personality. The followers are not attracted by any external power or authority.
Charismatic leaders have a clear vision and are willing to take any risk achieve their vision. They exhibit out of ordinary behaviors and are very sensitive to followers’ emotions. They will create a unique position for themselves and will be unchallengeable in their group. Their team or group will be known by their leader’s name. The identity of the group and leader will be inseparable. Further, research has shown there is a strong relation between charismatic leadership and high performance. Also, the followers will be highly satisfied due to the psychological motivation given by their leader. The followers will put more effort in work and will have a high level of respect for their leader.
There is a high criticism over charismatic leadership as there is a strong belief that they work for their personal interests more than their followers’ interests. To serve the best interest of an organization, charismatic leaders will not be the best fit they argue. They use their power for personal benefit and to improve their image than the organization.
What is Transformational Leadership?
Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes a change in individuals and social systems. In its purest form, it creates valuable and positive changes among followers with a vision of developing the followers into leaders. The transformational leader believes in their followers to succeed. To understand leadership and our roles as leaders and managers, we need to
consider the leader in context.
Research on leadership has focused on the traits of leaders, the behaviors they
enact, and how they make decisions.
However, one size does not fit all. Different leader styles and behaviors are needed
depending on the characteristics of the followers and the situation. How one might
lead unskilled workers would be very different than how one might lead
experienced professionals. Some job tasks are more routine while others call for
greater creativity and flexibility. Understanding the demands of the situation and
the needs of followers is critical to effective leadership.
Lets break down this transactional model. First consider the characteristics of leaders.
Many years of research have attempted to identify those traits that typically characterize
leaders. The six traits represented here are those most consistently identified among
successful leaders. Certainly leaders tend to have high energy levels, tend to be intelligent
and are self‐confident. Other traits are more situation dependent. For example a leader of
a multi‐disciplinary team will likely not have specific task knowledge of all the disciplines
within the team. The leader in this situation needs to rely on the task knowledge of her
team members. Similarly, while many leaders are dominant, increasingly servant
leadership has attracted attention. Charisma is often seen as a trait of public figures, but
may or may not be a feature among other leadership situations.
The four leader behaviors listed here represent degrees of focus of the leader with respect
to their followers. Leaders may focus attention on the well being and satisfaction of their
members (consideration) or may focus more attention on defining and directing the work.
Some models place consideration and structure on a continuum and suggest a dynamic
tension between focus on the tasks versus relationships in the team. Certainly, the leader
subordinate relationship is one of exchange. The leader provides direction, guidance,
resources and rewards and in turn receives the work, attention, and commitment of the
follower.
Finally, leaders may differ in the extent to which they involve followers in deciding what
needs to be done and how to do the work. Some leaders tend to be more autocratic. The
consultative style involves asking for input from key members, and then making decisions,
while the participative style involves more direct involvement of members in decisions.
The participative style requires transparency and open dialog, and implies that the leader is

Fargo and Town Manager Harlow are on a slippery slope to corruption. I think that Harlow is handling her position the correct way by trying to remain neutral and sticking to a code of ethics so the problem really comes down to the political actors in the town. It is good that Harlow declined the invite to the dinner party, and cracked down on employees playing politics at work, that is a step in the right direction to removing the possibility of political corruption.

At the end of the article Harlow remembers another city manager saying “you never have more authority than the day you walk into your office” What I get from that, and what I think Harlow got from that is that when you come into a position as a public manager everyone is going to want something from you. Political actors are going to want political favors, quid pro quos, you have something that everyone else wants and they are going to try and get that from you.

I think the best thing to do would be to continue to try to remain neutral. It will always be impossible to please absolutely everybody so the best thing to do is try to avoid doing everything everyone asks and stick to some sort of code of ethics.

I think the overarching theme of this article is that people are going to want things from the government. I agree with Harlow's steps to avoid political corruption in her administration by cracking down on political favors with the snow plows and referring to the ICMA code of ethics.

towards that individual. Charismatic leaders have followers who

will create a unique position for themselves and will be

organization, charismatic leaders will not be the best fit they
argue. They use their power for personal benefit and to improve

What is Transformational Leadership?
Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach
that causes a change in individuals and social systems. In its
purest form, it creates valuable and positive changes among
followers with a vision of developing the followers into leaders.
The transformational leader believes in their followers to
succeed. Transformational leaders connect the followers’ future
aspirations with the organizational vision and persuade the
followers to achieve the organizational goals to satisfy
themselves. They act as role models and inspire the followers.
They challenge followers to take greater ownership of their
work. Such leaders understand the followers’ strengths and
weaknesses, so the leader can align them with tasks which will
harness their optimal performance.
Transformational leaders pay attention to the well-being of their
individual followers. They engage with them and communicate
with them on personal issues which persuade followers to feel
positive and partner in the organization’s success. The downside
of transformational leadership is the transformation itself.
Certain times the organization or the people would not want to
transform. At this juncture, the leader will get frustrated and
may lose his vision.

DECISION TREE Assignment
Ellisson Seafood Company ships fresh seafood to customers in
the local area. The logistics manager has developed 3
alternatives to ship the seafood.
Part A
#1 Each time a shipment is ready, call a common carrier. While
there is no fixed costs the variable cost per shipment is $750.
#2 Enter into a contract with a common carrier. While the
variable cost would be $300 per shipment, the fixed cost would
be $5,000 per year.
#3 Lease their own refrigerated trucks. The fixed cost would be
$21,000 per year and the variable costs would be $50 per
shipment.
Now Ellisson does not know what the number of shipment will
be per year. But a review of past years history provided the
following information:

Ellisson Seafood does not know how many shipments there will
be per year. However an analysis of the previous years’ data
