2. INTRODUCTION
Cory Olcott will receive an Ed.M. from Harvard University,
where he studies school leadership. Cory Olcott is
currently a principal intern at TechBoston Academy.
Principal internship programs are designed with the goal
of producing great school leaders. There are a few
challenges that may be encountered in the execution of
such a program, but a few core components are keys to
success.
The first thing to consider is university-school district
collaboration to make sure there is enough support to
guide and supervise principal interns through the real-life
challenges of being a school manager.
3. PRINCIPAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS
Ongoing supervision and evaluation by qualified program
faculty members should be integrated into the curriculum.
There should also be a clear-cut set of school
assignments given with enough breadth to allow for
application of requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
This should accompany a thoroughly reviewed
progressive plan that will move interns from mere
observation to actual participation in school programs and
activities.
Diversity is also key to a successful internship. An
environment that allows for exposure to a diverse set of
students, teachers, and parents can be beneficial to the
principal-in-training.
