CarSharing and Neighborgoods are perfect embodiments
of the Sharing Economy. The first initiative enables users
to lend out their car to people in the neighbourhood.
Through the website or the adjacent app, one can make
an agreement about price and time.
Neighborgoods does exactly the same, but is more
relevant when you’re in need of (power) tools and/or
household items.
Both systems are based on trust. Still, they do rely on a
good insurance policy. It is Sane Recession meets the
Sharing Economy avant la lettre. In extension of this, it is
about redefining what is really important, getting out of
your comfort zone and buying only what you need.

French artist Benedetto Bufalino created a jocular art
installation in response to the financial crisis. His
message is clear and simple: we might not all be able to
buy a Ferrari, yet still –with a little creativity- one might be
able to drive one.
The case, which he termed the Testarossa is entirely
made of cardboard, except for the tailpipes, which are
made from aluminium foil.

Co-working is one of the results of today’s fast paced
lifestyle of the Urban Nomad. Hence, coffee shops,
restaurants and other public places have become
prevalent areas for urbanites to work. Due to the ongoing
worldwide recession and the growing number of people
that have become self-employed, co-working places fit in
with today’s growing lifestyle of sharing knowledge,
commodities and workplaces.
Hubs like these are mounting every day and are only
expected to increase. Ironically, it also starts to seep into
the consciousness of businesses such as Microsoft,
where many different hub inspired spaces are designed
for their employees. In turn, this “campus feeling” has
inspired new co-working spaces like B-Amsterdam.

A growing number of restaurants allow you to bring your
own wine. St. Paul’s tavern, one of the best restaurants in
Lisbon even offers free food to the poor. In Spain and
Portugal, where recession hit seriously hard, it is
considered Cool to bring your Marmita (lunchbox) to
work, school or university. This is interpreted not as a
sign of poverty, but more as a symbol of style and
intelligence.
