For to Feed the Rest of Your Family?
I hope you never have to consider this question. But for many in Cambodia this is a harsh reality that parents struggle
with on a daily basis. My name is Patrick, I have a wife, two young kids, and I have been compelled to take action.
Cambodia has had a long history of being a land with friendly people and beautiful landscapes. The Angkor Wat
temple is considered one of the most beautiful temples in the world and it has been showcased in a few Hollywood
blockbusters. This country has a rich culture, friendly people, and a dynamic history tainted with pain and violence.
Not too long ago, the land of Cambodia faced bloodshed and violence under the leadership of the Khmer Rouge.
During their reign from 1975-1979, they killed over 2 million people. That is 20% of the population. This new
government sought social reform and experimented reengineering the country. They wiped out the intellectual
population so no one could stand against them and left thousands to fend for themselves with failed agricultural and
pharmaceutical experiments. It was the darkest hour for Cambodia.
There is hope however. The people of Cambodia have regained control of their government. The Republic of
Cambodia has been established since 1999 and they have been striving to rebuild what was lost. It is not easy coming
out of such hardships, though. 60% of the current population is 24 years old or younger. They have little education
with few chances of making it to college. 1.5 million children under the age of 15 have jobs to help supplement their
parents’ meager incomes. This is not the worse part, however. With such terrible conditions, human trafficking
statistics have soared in the country. It has been reported that 100,000 victims have been sold into the sex trade and
20% of tourists take advantage of this, often with minors. This has given Cambodia one of the highest rates of HIV in
Asia. Parents in this country have sold their children for as little as $10 just to survive.
After learning this statistic, my heart broke for those children and parents. My wife and I have taken the next step
and will be traveling to Cambodia with World Agape Missions to visit 4 locations that cater to women and children
rescued from human trafficking. We will be working with over 600 children to show them that they have not been
forgotten by the outside world. CPS has graciously given me permission to write this article to share some of the
atrocities that are taking place around us. I thank all of you who have supported my wife and me on this journey and
I encourage all of you to be bold, stand up against injustice, and take the next step to wherever your heart leads you !
