EBOLA VIRUS PREVENTION TO MARYLAND COUNTY… ACT NOW…YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
The Rotary Club of Harper City (RCHC) is putting out a world-wide plea for help in its fight against the Ebola Virus Disease. As
a humanitarian community service organization, RCHC, with approval from Maryland County, Liberia authorities, has
committed to helping prevent the advance of the Ebola virus to the County. Liberia is one of the West African countries affected
by the virus outbreak..
RCHC embarked on an awareness campaign to educate villagers. They had never even heard of the disease because of their
remoteness, and the lack of a public radio station signal. RCHC volunteers have gone to the Kablaken and Whole Greway,
Yekudi to the border of Cote I’voire, from Geabo to Fishtown, and of course also to Harper City. The people in the villages were
grateful for the information but follow up is needed. There is need to take awareness and prevention tips to other villages in the
County.
The regional JJ Dossen Hospital in Harper City, the administrative capital city of Maryland County, is completely inadequate to
handle an outbreak. There is only one doctor available and resources are minimal, if at all. The city is unprotected should an
Ebola outbreak occur.
Harper City is a few miles from William V.S. Tubman University (TU), (www.tubmanu.edu.lr). The government-supported
university has put together a task force on Ebola, and also makes its appeal, and has taken actions by spreading awareness
through posters, and providing buckets with chlorinated water and soap for hand-washing.
These two organizations, TU and RCHC, are pleading for your help. News from Monrovia show that airlines are cancelling
flights, and that supplies are dwindling. But you can help. We have contacted mutual friends who have agreed to help us:
