Francoist political repression
The Francoist repression refers to physical, political and cultural repression that
suffered people considered against the Franco´s regime. Especially it is referred to the
postwar repression suffered by the defeated side in the Spanish Civil War.
Its hardest period happened between 1939-1943. In this last year the Nazi defeats in
the Second World War forced Franco to show a most moderate image of his regime. In
this year were released thousands prisoners and commuted many death penalties.
It is estimated 20.000-50.000 people were executed in these tragic years.
In the subsequent years until the Franco´s death repression kept, but with less people
affected.
