2. We have been reading a book called
‘Jar of Dreams’.
Jar of Dreams is about Rinko, a Japanese-
American girl. She lives in California and
because she is different, people are unkind to
her. She dislikes herself and wishes she was
someone different. Her father is a barber
but dreams of becoming a mechanic. Her
mother cleans other people’s houses but
decides to follow her dream and start her own
laundry business.
3. What is great about me…What is great about me…
• At the start of the story,
Rinko wishes she could be
like everyone else. She
wishes that her hair, her
name and her heritage were
different. However, by the
end of the story, Rinko
learns to start liking who she
is.
• We thought about something
we liked about ourselves. We
wrote about something we
liked about ourselves and
would not want to change.
I love the freckles on my
skin. My Mum says that
it is where the fairies
have kissed me!
- Archie
4. My someone special…My someone special…
• In the story, Mama receives
a letter containing the news
that her sister, who lives in
Japan, will be coming to
spend the summer with the
family. She is very happy
about the visit.
• We imagined that we had
received news that someone
special is going to visit us.
We wrote about someone
whose visit would make us
very happy.
My Daddy lives in a
different house. I
love it when he
comes to visit. He is
coming for
Christmas dinner
this year.
- Summer
5. My perfect job…My perfect job…
• In the story, Mama tells
Rinko that she wanted to
become a teacher when she
was a young girl. Cal, Rinko's
brother, wants to become an
engineer and Rinko's father
dreams of opening a repair
shop.
• We thought about an
occupation that we thought
would be perfect for us. We
wrote about our "dream" job.
I love my dog Pippin.
He makes me happy
because he is so funny.
I would love to be a
kind, considerate vet
who looks after lots of
animals.
- Bradley
6. Achieving your dreams…Achieving your dreams…
• In the story, which
takes place in the 1930s,
times are hard for the
Tsujimura family. Papa
tells the family not to
be afraid of making
plans and having dreams.
• We wrote a paragraph
about the plans and
dreams of a different
fictional family member
- the obstacles they
encounter, the help they
receive from others, the
actions they take.
There once lived a family who lived
in a very poor part of South Africa.
They didn’t have much money and
they didn’t have a doctor. One day
the baby was ill. The baby’s big
brother walked to the next village
where there was a doctor. He saved
his baby sister from dying. He really
wanted to be a doctor after. An old
man in his village helped him to
learn how to be a doctor because
there wasn’t a school for him to go to.
