A friar was begging in the streets. He asked a farmer for some
money, but he didn’t give him anything.
So the hungry friar said he was going to cook a stone soup. He picked
up a stone, shook it and checked if it was good for the soup.

Ele encheu a panela
com água e pós lá dentro a pedra.

The people of the house started laughing about him and he asked
them if they had never eaten a stone soup and assured them that it
was very good.
The farmer gave him a pot for cooking so he could cook the soup.
He filled it with water and put the stone inside it.

gordura, sal, couve, chouriça pois o caldo ficaria melhor. O lavrador ficou
pasmado, mas estava curioso e cedeu-lhe o pedido.

farmer was amazed and curious, so he gave him what he asked for. When

O frade lavou-a e levou-a consigo.
Assim comeu bem onde não lhe queriam dar nada.

Everyone loved the soup when they tasted it.
After eating the soup the stone was still in the pot. The friar cleaned it
and took it with him.
And it was like this that he had a nice meal where nobody wanted to give

Once upon a time there was a very cowardly tailor, who was working
at his front door. He was afraid of everything, but he liked to pretend
he was brave.
Once he saw a swarm of flies and, with one blow, killed seven of
them. Thereafter he started boasting:
- I can kill seven with one blow.
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

The king was extremely worried, because his bravest
general, D.Caio, had died in the war, and the enemy's troops were
ready to attack the kingdom , because they knew he had nobody to
sent out to fight them. When he heard about the tailor, he thought
that someone so brave would be able to fill the position of D.Caio.
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

Veio o alfaiate à comparência do rei e perguntou-lhe:
  - Sim, Vossa majestade.
  - Então nesse caso vais comandar as minhas tropas e atacar os
inimigos que me estão a cercar.

The king called the tailor to the palace and asked him:
  - It is true that you can kill seven with just one blow?
  - Yes, Your Majesty.
  - Then, in that case, you’ll lead my troops and attack the
enemies that are surrounding the kingdom.
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

sentiu as esporas e começou a correr, enquanto o alfaiate gritava:
 - Eu caio, eu caio!

He asked for the armour of D.Caio and ordered the tailor to put it
on, although the tailor was much shorter. Then the king asked for
the horse of D. Caio. The servants helped the tailor climb to the
horse but he was shaking so much that the horse felt the spurs
and began to run while the tailor screamed:
 - Eu caio, eu caio! (I’m going to fall)
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

 - Eu caio, eu caio!

Everyone who heard him said as he went by:
- He now says he is D. Caio. We’ve got the man for the job.
The horse ran to the site where there battle was taking place, while
the tailor kept screaming, desperate:
- Eu caio, eu caio! (I’m going to fall)
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

E fugiram a sete pés.

As soon as the enemy soldiers saw the horse of the brave general
and heard the cry: “Eu caio!", they became aware of the danger, and
said to each other:
 - We’re doomed. Here comes D. Caio, here he comes!
So they fled as fast as possible.
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

coragem.

The king was very pleased with the good news, and to reward the
tailor for this victory, he gave him the princess in marriage. And
everybody praised the successor of D. Caio for his courage.

Havia um monge chamado Frei João
Sem Cuidados, que não se afligia com
nada. Quando o Rei ouviu falar nele,
pensou:
-Deixa estar, eu vou arranjar-lhe algo
com que se preocupar.

There was once a monk named Brother John Careless who never
cared about anything.
When the king of his kingdom knew about this he thought:
- Never mind, I'll give him something to care about.
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

Mandou-o chamar, e disse-lhe:
- Vou dar-te uma adivinha e, se dentro
de três dias, me não souberes
responder, mando-te matar. Quero
que me digas:
- Quanto pesa a lua? Quanta água
tem o mar? O que é que eu penso?

He called him and said:
- I'll give you a riddle and if you don't guess it in three days, I'll
have to kill you. You have to tell me: How heavy is the moon? How
much water has the sea? And what do I think?
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

Frei João Sem Cuidados saiu do palácio
bastante atrapalhado, pensando na
resposta que havia de dar.
Encontrou o seu moleiro, que estranhou
vê-lo tão triste.

Brother John left the palace very concerned, thinking about the
answers to the king’s questions. .
He met his miller, who was surprised to see him so sad.
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

- Olá, senhor Frei João Sem Cuidados, porque está
assim?
Quanto pesa a lua? Quanta água tem o mar? E que
é que ele pensa?

- Hello, Sir Brother John Careless. Why are you so sad?
- The king told me that I have three days to answer three
questions: How heavy is the moon? How much water has the
sea? And what does he think?
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

O moleiro desatou a rir e disse-Ihe:
-Não se preocupe. Empreste-me a sua roupa
que eu resolverei o problema.

The miller started laughing and said:
-Don't worry. Lend me your clothes and I'll solve the problem.
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

Passados os três dias, o moleiro
                                       vestido de Frei Joao sem
cuidados, foi ter com o rei.
                                       O rei perguntou-lhe:
                                       - Então, quanto pesa a Iua?
                                       - Saberá vossa majestade que não
pode pesar mais do que um arrátel
                                       (450 gramas), porque todos dizem
                                       que tem quatro quartos.

After three days, the miller got dressed in Brother John's clothes and
went to the presence of the king. The king asked him:
- So, how much weighs the moon?
-As your majesty well knows it can't weigh more than a pound
(450 grams), because everyone says it has four quarters.
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

 - It's true. And now: how much water has the sea?
 - That’s very easy to guess, but first you’ll have to order the
closing of all the rivers, otherwise nothing can be done.
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

O rei achou bem respondido, mas,
irritado por ver que Frei João
 escapava às dificuldades, replicou:
 - Agora, se não souberes em que
 estou a pensar, mando-te matar!

The king thought-” well answered” but angry to see that Brother
John was escaping the difficulties, said:
- Now, if you don't know what I'm thinking, I'll have to kill you!
Comenius Project “Windows on Europe”

O moleiro respondeu:
moleiro.

Deixou cair o capucho de frade e o
rei ficou admirado com tanta esperteza.

The miller said:
- Well, Your Majesty thinks you are talking to Brother
John Careless, but you are talking to his miller.
He dropped the Brother's hood and the king was amazed with
such smartness.
