Coffee are a reflection of colors of
life of Indonesia people. They play an
important role in the spiritual, social
and economic aspects of culture and
traditions in Indonesia. These beau-tiful
heritage have various legend-ary
and motifs reflecting different
meanings and levels in the society
and community. They are worn in cer-emonies,
traded, bartered and given
as wedding gifts. And almost of them
made and served by women with the
long history and traditions passed
down through generations.
The ASPUKK (Women SMEs Entre-preneurs
Assistance Association)
work closely with over thousands
women in more than tens provinces
and hundreds cooperative groups
from Sumatera until Papua islands to
conserve these traditions of sustain-able
lifestyle. The collaboration is
reviving the ancient traditions of
making natural dyes for use in weav-ing
and conserve the organic coffee to
enhance the livelihoods. By launch-ing
of D’Apuk brands, the proceeds
from green business management
help weavers and farmers establish

D’Puk by ASPUKK is one of best prac-tices
which locals still practice the
green lifestyle in its original cultural
settings. Each Natural-Handmade
Woven piece and Cup of Organic Cof-fee
are labor of love from the women
to friends, families, ancestors and
surroundings. Motifs and patterns are
handed down through the generations
within the family, creating a timeless
link between ancestors and those liv-ing
now.
D’Puk by ASPUKK on Ikat, or Ikkat, is
one of style of Natural Hand-Weavings
that uses a resist dyeing process simi-lar
to tie-dye on either the warp or
weft before the threads are woven to
create a pattern or design for reflec-tion
of daily traditions. Ikat means
“to tie” or “to bind” in the Indonesian
Language and has the same root as
the words dekat (“close”), lekat (“to
stick”), pikat (“to catch”) etc.

7. Women in Nusa Tenggara Timur
(NTT; East Nusa Tenggara) have to
be independent and struggle in the
fields every day. Their men are usu-ally
working outside the province to
earn more money. That condition has
pushed these powerful women to
work on the field to meet their daily
needs.
However, there was time when
women were in no form to work in
the field such as when they experi-ence
pregnancy. The responsibility
to keep their babies’ save forces
them to stop their farming activity
especially when the last trimester
arrives. This break, of course, caused
a domino effect to the break of their
economic resources. Du’Anyam came
to resolve the occurring problem usu-ally
happened in Indonesia’s eastern
part.
Some facts taken from survey said
that 75% of NTT mothers surveyed
do not have enough money to partici-pate
in the Indonesian goverenment-sponsored
pregnancy savings plan,

Du’Anyam as NTT’s non-governmental
organization
is trying to promote empow-erment
of these pregnant
women by teaching them to
turn palm leaves into valuable
handicrafts. Various crafts
such as sandals, bags, hats,
and baskets made from pal

that comes from selling handi-crafts
