That’s SGS.
As the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, we provide competitive advantage, drive sustainability and deliver trust.
Recognised as the global benchmark for quality and integrity, we employ over 75,000 people and operate a network of more than 1,500 offices and laboratories around the world.
(Roughly half of our employees are based in EMEA, with another quarter in the Americas and a quarter in Asia Pacific)
We aim to be the most competitive and the most productive service organisation in the world.
Our core competencies in inspection, verification, testing and certification are being continuously improved to be best-in-class. They are at the heart of what we are.
Our chosen markets will be solely determined by our ability to be the most competitive and to consistently deliver unequalled service to our customers all over the world.
We seek to be epitomised by our passion, integrity, entrepreneurship and our innovative spirit, as we continually strive to fulfil our vision.
These values guide us in all that we do and are the bedrock upon which our organisation is built.
A little more than 130 years ago, SGS was founded in Rouen, France, as a grain inspection company. Since that moment, we have grown through diversification and acquisition into the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company.
Throughout the early and mid 20th century, we expanded beyond our core offering in agricultural inspection to activities in minerals, oil, gas, chemicals, consumer goods and industrial services. By 1980, half of our revenue was generated from services that had not even existed in 1970, adding expertise in automotive, environmental, certification, governmental and life science services. In 1981, SGS became a publicly traded company on the Swiss Stock Exchange.
The 1990s opened up tremendous opportunity for us as trade barriers fell and new markets emerged. By the start of the new millennium, a wide-ranging corporate restructuring led to the formation of the ten businesses that are now found at SGS.
From our beginnings in 1878 as a grain inspection house, we have steadily grown into our role as the industry leader. We have done this through continual improvement and innovation and by reducing risk and improving the productivity and efficiency of our customers’ operations. Moving forward, we are well positioned for growth and will continue to look beyond customers’ and society’s expectations in order to deliver market leading services wherever they are needed.
The unrivalled expertise, experience and commitment of our people make them our greatest asset. We actively seek out professionals who are specialists in their field and we combine this with a deep understanding of our clients’ needs.
In the highly specialised fields in which we work there is no substitute for expertise. We combine rigorous training with continuous improvement. We draw on the best thinking available to ensure we are always justified in our claim of being real experts.
Commitment is easy to claim yet hard to put into practice. At SGS we demonstrate our commitment every day. We invest heavily in training people to deliver the best products and services. As a company, we live up to the highest ethical standards. These values are the foundation upon which SGS has built its worldwide reputation as a trustworthy partner.
WE WORK ACROSS INDUSTRIES
SGS provides services across a range of industries from agriculture to automotive, food to forestry and many others. Our specialists are trained in these distinct sectors yet are used to interacting across geographies, markets and cultures, so that we can deliver vertical integration and horizontal cover.
WE COVER SUPPLY CHAINS
Supply and value chains are becoming more complex but also more integrated and are continuously changing. As a consequence, clients are looking for efficient ways to assure the quality, value and origin of goods. SGS services are designed to create greater clarity in all aspects of transactions from raw materials to finished products.
WE THINK GLOBALLY
SGS is a global company with over 1 000 offices worldwide. Our presence helps clients make global decisions and apply global standards. Just as importantly, we have over 48 000 highly skilled employees ready to be where they are needed, when they are needed.
WE ACT LOCALLY
We believe that local clients need local solutions. That’s why we have the best local talent and services. They are flexible enough to react to individual needs, but have access to the broadest global tools and networks.
WE USe the right TECHNOLOGY
Technology itself isn’t the answer – it’s the right technology that counts. We are constantly renewing our systems and tools to bring better technology systems to the field, to laboratories and into our offices.
OUR CULTURE OF INTEGRITY
Integrity is at the core of our business, it is the common thread through all of our activities. We are committed to operating openly, honestly and transparently and ensuring that the highest standards of integrity are applied to all of our activities worldwide in accordance with international best practice.
We have the best people. People with integrity, passion and a commitment to deliver. In a company where the only limit to your professional success is you.
That’s SGS.
