3. Purple Loosestrife
is a flowering plant
with pretty green
leaves. The purple
flowers have a
green center.
It is about 72 in.
inches tall.
It is very hardy and
spreads quickly.
4. Purple Loosestrife
originated in Europe.
Settlers brought it to
plant in their gardens
but it escaped and
started to spread.
Seeds were probably in
the mud in ballast water
and released when the
ballast water was
emptied.
5. It harms other plants and animals . It does this by
spreading fast and taking over so other plants can’t
grow. Animals that depend on native plants for food
and shelter also suffer.
6. We can dig up the
roots.
Take all the roots
out of the ground .
Monitor the drainage
ditches or the
streams leading
from heavily infested
areas.
7. The Puple Loosestrife is crowding out the
natural plants and reducing the food
source for animals. We should be sure
that it does not get into our water
sources or farmland.
