Editor's Notes
-Introduce yourself and your role at IslandWood -Introduce IslandWood as an outdoor school and not camp (explain the difference )
-Get ideas from the parents then address the answer with our mission (next slide)
Explain that our mission is to have them enjoy learning outside and gain more respect for nature. By learning about something they will hopefully care about it as well.
We want them to learn about the natural world around them
Consulted other outdoor schools, conference centers and had student focus groups to help in the design (ex. The windows by each bunk was suggested from the student focus group). IW was built using kids’ ideas and with the purpose of having kids here.
Slides 7-9 will automatically advance
Talk about perspectives Can you find where you live on this map?

- Similar rules and expectations to that of their school -Explain that each of the field groups will come up with their own community agreement based on the 3 IW rules Stress the safety aspect (this is a major reason that we do parent meetings – to allay parents’ fears about their child’s safety) – Closed campus, everyone is trained in WFA, carry radios, lodges have key code to get in
-Explain how the EEC Program works and that we are all here working on an M.Ed.
-Mention the morning routine-wake up, breakfast (lots of options), pack for the day and meet at Friendship Circle
-Friendship Circle- meeting place in the morning, Wednesday night campfire, sing lots of songs, gather with the other school (if there is one)
- Explain how the field groups are organized (about 10 kids, 1 IW instructor, adult from school)
-Each field group will participate in some kind of team building activity every day and have a visit to the teams course
-Combine art and science through different activities -Art Studio- drumming, leaf in a bag, etc -Science- water quality, microscopes, compost critters, watersheds and ecosystems Add in a slide on the AIR if there is one
Activities designed to help students explore IslandWood- binoculars, journaling, free exploration, using senses to explore the environment
Picnic style lunch consists of sandwiches, fruit, veggie and chips -Mid-morning and afternoon snack
- Quick explanation of the many different habitats at IslandWood that the students will be exploring
- Explain with the water venues that the students will not be getting in the water and that they may have an opportunity to be on the Floating Classroom and that all students will have life jackets on during that activity
- IslandWood has 255 acres with lots of trails to explore
Hour to: rest, shower, change into dry clothes, hang out with friends, journal
-Eat family style, usually mix up the field groups and schools to give the students a chance to get to know different students, assigned tables -Kitchen staff is amazing about dietary needs/restrictions – make sure to let us know on the form
-Wade measures the amount of food waste to help teach about not wasting food - There are 2 buckets – compost and liquid - What does compost mean? - What can we compost at IslandWood (this might be different than what you can compost at school or home)? – When you click “plant-based food waste” will appear -What goes in the non-compost at IslandWood? When you click “all animal-based food waste” appears -What goes in liquids? When you click “any leftover liquid in your cup” appears
Hour of Lodge Time -Evening Program- night hike, group evening program, campfire -Hour to shower, get ready for bed, journal, read, etc
Gear room- students can borrow any gear (rain gear, warm layers, hat, gloves, socks, water bottles, back packs)
Go through list on slide (they will be getting a copy of the list if they haven’t already)
Knowledge- they may be really eager to teach you about the things they learned- PLEASE ENCOURAGE IT!!!!
-Students may also want to change things at home based on what they learned. If these are changes you feel comfortable making, please do so because the kids will gain more of a sense of empowerment
We did an assessment study 2 years ago and these are some of the quotes that we received from students about how they changed after IW Bottom line- IslandWood makes a difference in how kids see themselves and realize their abilities
