A talk I gave at the London MongoDB User Group about how MongoDB has helped us at ClaimAble (http://claim-able.com), a small London startup, to take on the world of enterprise software!
It *really* is. \n Most know. Few doing anything about it!\n Cherry picked the worse of each discipline within software dev: performance, database design, UI, UX (<- perhaps most of all)\n Examples - restaurant, shop, dentist\n There *are* exceptions of course, but on the whole, enterprise software sucks!\n How do I know this? Andy why do I care? I build it!\n
We make enterprise software\n Specifically for insurance claims\n Sector, along with finance, which is behind!\n\n
What do we mean by that? Claims/insurance software among the *worst* of all enterprise software. That’s saying something! Not just me, our customers say this repeatedly.\n
We are change the perception of software in the enterprise\n For insurers, loss adjusters (the people who check claims) anyone who deals with claims\n Anyone can use it. No barriers to entry.\n

Built by people who are detached from the users.\n It appears as if they make no effort to actually understand what users want.\n IT Departments say no to everything!\n We think. To make good software, need PASSION about tech stack,\n Enter MongoDB\n

At the heart of ClaimAble is MongoDB!\n Been using it for a couple of years, but only in last year really ramped up to production.\n Three things we love about Mongo and that have helped us, as a small team, accomplish great things!\n

* I believe creativity is important for all aspects of software development. \n
Artists: MongoDB unleashes artist inside\n Artists: Can’t make elegant apps without being creative.\n Artists: Encourages creative solutions\n Innovative: Think outside the box.\n Innovative: Databases at the core of enterprise software. Data-driven \n Hard problems: What we are doing is HARD! Esp. SMALL TEAM tackling hard problem!\n Hard problems: I can say YES to clients\n
\n
Love: Developers love Mongo! Love the tech = great product\n Dev Happiness: Easy to prototype stuff. Encourages experimentation. Great features.\n Taste: Not to be underestimated.\n Taste: Elegant app comes from elegant code.\n Taste: Collections, JSON -> elegant. = clean code\n Taste: Bring the best of everything into one place.\n
\n
Just Works: Just works OUR END. So ClaimAble just works THEIR END!\n Fast: At MongoDB UK conf. Mat Wall GDS (Government Digital Service), retold an anecdote about how impressed a minister was by how quickly stuff could be done with MongoDB. Same for us!\n Awe: People are impressed. Especially in corporate world. This is a huge advantage.\n Awe: Think outside the box -> anything is possible -> clients impressed\n Awe: Renaissance -> they *know* they should be doing something. Have heard buzzwords etc.\n Awe: Time travel\n
Leads to better product\n Loads of great features\n These three shouldn’t be overlooked\n Schema-less, querying and Aggregation Framework.\n Enterprise so data driven -> mongo fits in.\n

MongoDB at the core has allowed us to get to where we are today\n The ease of use, power, flexibility and love for the product, bubbles all the way up\n Its DNA is in pretty much every part of our software\n Most important (and most overlooked) is UX\n Data driven -> mongo DNA in everything.\n Informs UI/UX\n Object mapper - abstracts away.\n Learn shell (behind the scenes)\n
MongoDB enables us as developers, which makes us want to care about our users\n Which makes them happy\n Gives us the “nothing is impossible” mindset which rubs off on users\n They might not know what is giving them that warm and fuzzy feeling.\n

We are hiring. If you like a challenge, we are looking for MongoDB dev/ops people to help with platform as we scale out.\n
