3. While experts disagree on when, how much,
and what to do to stretch, they do agree on the
importance of stretching to prevent injuries and
improve performance. One commonly held
belief is to do dynamic stretches before a run
and static stretches after running. Before
stretching at all, however, it is important to jog
for 10 minutes to warm up the muscles.
Stretching tight or cold muscles can induce
injuries.
4. Dynamic stretches, such as leg swings and
walking lunges, are controlled movements that
help loosen up the muscles. Dynamic stretches
for runners should focus on putting the leg
muscles through the full range of motion. Static
stretches, including the kneeling hip flexor and
standing quad and calf stretches, work entire
muscle groups. With static stretches, runners
should target the major leg muscles and hold
each stretch from 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
