2. Hip Hop/Rap Conventions
Dress Sense.
In rap and hip hop, there are two types of
dress sense, one is urban gang associated
street wear and often are seen in
prisons, examples are hoodys, big jackets and
loose trousers falling below the waist line.
This also reflects on the characters
belief about how rap should be potrayed.
3. Hip Hop/Rap Conventions
• The colors associated with rap are often dark and
blunt.
• Blacks, greys and browns are common
colours, the genre is a lot more emotional than
pop for example, and often the rapper is telling
the story of his life and emphasizes the dark
moments he has experienced.
• They often refer to the corruption and danger of
their ‘hood’ (local area) and use rapping as a way
to escape from the dangers of their area.
4. Hip Hop/Rap Conventions
• Dress Sense.
• The other type of dress in Rap/Hip Hop is much
more majestic and vibrant.
• This dress sense is used for the rapper to show
how rich he is and therefore inflict the viewer of
the music video with the feeling that he is
superior and special.
• It is a lot more expensive and could be used to
emphasis that the rapper has grown out of ‘urban
rapping’ and wants to become more mainstream.
5. Hip Hop/Rap Conventions
• Often the speech in rap is gramatically
incorrect and tampered for the language to
rhyme and flow consistently throughout the
song. It is direct and aggressive to make the
song more intense. There is a lot of profanity
and swearing as the rappers vocabulary may
be limited.
6. Exceptions to the conventions and
stereotypes of rap/hip-hop.
• There are many exceptions to the conventions and
stereotypes of rap/hip-hop.
• An example is the rapper Akala, who uses Shakespeare
as his way of telling us how life is the same as it was
back then and how Shakespeare is still significant in
our lives despite us not being aware of it.
• His rap style isnt intense and aggressive like the
majority, it is a lot calmer and more poetic (like
Shakespeare himself) but still uses the basic convention
of rap to make the genre clear e.g dress sense and
colour.
