ACUITY STRATEGY REVIEW: How to use
ACUITY to increase ISTEP+ Scores
 During the entire school year, students should complete the
individually assigned ACUITY Tutorials.
 It is important to determine when students will have the opportunity
to take their tutorials. Utilize computer labs and computer stations
in classrooms. If possible, have students who arrive to school early,
take advantage of open lab time or embed the tutorials into your
after school programs. The most effective after school learning
experiences combine direct instruction in small groups and the use
of ACUITY Tutorials. Students should keep track of their progress
with tutorials. Incentives should be created to support student
engagement and motivation.
 After ACUITY A and B, use the ACUITY Tutorials with your Whole
Class to address prior year gaps in standards as identified by the
Matrix Reports. Project the tutorials on the screen in your
classroom and do them together. Embed competition between
classrooms and/or grade levels.
 After ACUITY C, use the ACUITY the Matrix Report data to calendar
out classroom instruction using 10 minute daily mini-lessons based
upon weak current grade level standards. At the end of each
week, give a mini-quiz to assess mastery. Use this strategy through
the end of the school year.

plan of action.
 Gaps in prior year
standards need to be
addressed in 2 ways.
Share the Matrix Report
data with the grade
level team below the
grade that you teach.
They will need to
ensure that their
current students
master the standards
that are addressed in
ACUITY in order to
build instructional
capacity.
 After ACUITY A and B,
address the gaps in prior
year standards by using
the tutorials with your
whole class.

determine which standards will yield
the most points on ISTEP+
 The “Rainbow”
chart was created
by pulling data
from the 2012
ISTEP+ Group
Academic
Standards
Summary Reports.
The chart identifies
the number of total
points for each
standard by
content tested and by
grade level. The
standards are listed
on the chart from
highest points
possible to lowest
points possible. Work
smarter, not harder!
3. Use the ISTEP+ Countdown Calendar
to plan out targeted instruction
 Use the ACUITY the
Matrix Report data to
calendar out
classroom instruction
using 10 minute daily
mini-lessons based
upon weak current
grade level standards.
At the end of each
week, give a mini-quiz
to assess mastery.
Use Class Roster Report data to
KEEP SCORE
 From the
ACUITY Roster
Report for each
grade level and
content tested,
add the PASS+
percentage
(Green Bar) and
PASS
percentage
(Yellow Bar) to
get a total
predicted
ISTEP+ PASS
rate. If students
took ISTEP+ on
the same day
that they took
ACUITY, this
would be the
predicted total
PASS
percentage.
