4. Introduction of Fingerprint
Recognition System
O A well known and publicized biometrics, it
uses biological characteristics to verify
individuals apart from each other
The system identifies our
fingerprint patterns
using a directional map,
matching the ridge lines
on our fingers with the
map
5. Fundamental principles
O Each individual have different fingerprint
patterns, even identical twins have slightly
different fingerprints
O An individual’s fingerprint will remain
unchanged throughout their lifetime
6. Fingerprint matching
O Typical False Rejection Rates range
between
0.03%-1.4%
O Typical False Acceptance Rates are
around
0.01%-0.001%
Usually due to dry skin condition
7. Fingerprint scanner
O Two ways of scanning
O 1. optical scanner- shines
a light over your
fingerprint and captures a
digital photograph
O 2. Capacitive scanner-when
your finger is set on
the surface, it measures
the distances between the
ridges in your fingerprints
11. Online Survey
O Purpose of Survey: To see whether
students are familiar with the system and
understands what it can do

12. Survey Questions
O Q1: Are you familiar with the fingerprint
recognition system?
O Q2: Where have you used this technology
before?
O Q3: What do you think this technology can
develop into in the future?
O Q4: What do you think is the most
significant benefit the Fingerprint
Recognition System brings to our daily
life?
13. Survey Questions
• Q5: How long have you been using
this application?
• Q6: How frequent do you use the
fingerprint recognition system?
• Q7: On a scale of 1 to 5, how much
do you trust the system
• Q8: Have you experienced some sort
of error or failure with the fingerprint
recognition system?
15. Data Analysis-1
O The above bar chart shows that the
majority of people think reducing the time
needed to activate accounts is the most
significant benefit they can get from using
the Fingerprint Recognition System.
O By reviewing the data, we can observe
that most people would like to choose
technologies that will benefit their daily
lives, like limiting the time needed to log
onto their accounts on computers.
17. Data Analysi-2
O 35% of people who completed the survey
use this application most of the time while
there are 5% of them who have never
used it.
O Combining the data from question 1 and
6, people are quite familiar with this
system (70%) and they use it on a daily
basis. It is clear that this application plays
an important role in people’s lives.
19. Data Analysis-3
O Based on the pie chart, 65% of people
have experienced failure with the
fingerprint recognition system before.
O We can conclude that this application still
need to be improved in its accuracy, as
this is one of the most crucial functions of
it. This technology needs to be
experimented over and over again in
order to eliminate the mistakes.

Others
Faster log-ins to various accounts or
devices
As entrance security in most buildings
Creating scanners that can instantly
identify someone with their fingerprint
21. Data Analysis-4
O Generally, people see the potential of this
technology developing further in the future
and be used more frequently. They mostly
want to experience faster log-in times
22. Survey Result- 5

23. Data analysis- 5
O People are most familiar with this system
being used in immigration (75%). This is
because using E-channel to go through
immigration is significantly faster than
using other ways.
24. Future Development/Data
Analysis
O From the overall trend, most people are
aware of the existence of this technology
and have used it before. It has the
potential of being incorporated and be
used more often in our daily lives.
25. Conclusion
O In conclusion, the majority of people are
familiar with this system mainly because
they have used it before
O They would like to see this technology be
introduced and adapted further to various
place : entrances, instant identification
and faster log-ins
26. Conclusion
O Although sometimes there might be failure
of recognizing an individual’s fingerprint
(maybe due to skin condition or other
factors), people still trust the system’s
accuracy of identification
