The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 manifested into the first of a series of labor strikes in the United
States and the first general strike of the nation. Working on the railroads, labor workers already had
poor working conditions and low wages. However, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) had
made its second wage cut in the past eight months; both cuts by ten percent. In response to this,
labor workers refused to allow any freight trains to roll in and out of the station until the restoration
of their original wages. The railroad strikers included individuals from railroad workers to other
labor sympathizers alike. The Great Strike of 1877 succeeded for the labor economy because of the
large number of labor supporters, the overpowering of the militia, and the power of initiative from
the people. Several citizens supported the laborers because of the dangers their jobs came with and
their impact on the overall economy of the United States. The strikers refused to restart the trains, so
the B&O company employed new men to restart the trains, however, the strikers immediately
interfered. When the police went to protect the new men, the strikers were, "reinforced by a large

The Transcontinental Railroad was a technological breakthrough that managed to make the USA
feel smaller to travelers. Railroad systems had been in place decades before the transcontinental
railroad had been constructed. However, these systems were not in synch as there were many
different railroad companies and even more laws in place from state to state. This was in part due to
the civil war, during this period both governments wanted better transportation of goods and troops.
This caused many factors like track gauge (spacings of the rails) lengths to differ vastly. These
differences in factors caused the slowing of transportation as, many of the times, people and goods

intersect towns, causing them to board trains on the other side of town. The Transcontinental

Railways are one of the fastest ways to travel. From the first steam train in England, to the subways
of New York City, people have been fascinated by the speeds of the " Iron Horse". One of the most
influential forms of rail transportation was the steam train. This train changed the world with its
ability to make rail transportation available to the public, travel at high speeds, and haul heavy
loads.
Though the first public railways were built in England, one of the most significant public railways
was the American Transcontinental Railroad. Before this railroad was built, slower, more
inconvenient forms of transportation had to be used such as horse and wagon. The construction of
this historic railway began in 1863. Workers built westward from the town of Omaha, Nebraska and
at the same time they built eastward from Sacramento, California. The end result was 2,900
kilometers of rails. Before this railroad was built, one would have to take a wagon, horse, or a
combination of shorter railroads and several ships to reach the other side of the country. Where the
builders met working from east and west, both sides of the rails were sealed together with golden
nails on May tenth, 1869 in northern Utah. The point where the two rails met is now a national
monument. The railroad took six years to build. It was the invention of the steam engine that

Transcontinental is going across a continent, and transcontinental railroads are the means that are
used to go across continents from Eastern to the Western part of United States. The Union Pacific
railroad offered railroad transport from New York on the Atlantic Coast, all the way to California, on
the Pacific Coast of United States. The project of the railroad terminated in 1869, which was
pioneered by two companies, which were Union Pacific and Central Pacific, built the railroad from
east and west, and they met at Utah. Central Pacific laborers mainly consisted of the Chinese, while
those in Union Pacific were mainly Irish. Both companies gave their workers harsh working
conditions. The railroad made a major impact on transcontinental transportation but was faced by
some dangers and difficulties.
Overland route, which was previously referred to as Pacific railroad is 3500 miles long. The main
funder of the railroad was the US government through the offering of higher loans and bonds
(Healey 460). Also, the government offered land grants for usage in the construction. 1830 was the

and Transcontinental Railway (C&S) merged to create largest street railway company on West.

The Rev. Jay Finelli, pastor of Holy Ghost church in Tiverton, R.I., said he always has been
interested in trains, but took his interest to a new level when he joined Waushakum a few years ago.
``The hobby is great for many reasons but two stand out in my mind the most,'' Finelli said. ``I have
made many great friends at Waushakum and around the country, including Canada, and I have also
