Wilsonville Recreation Center
Introduction
The primary purpose of building a recreation center is to supply the Wilsonville campus with a
community–based facility that encourages and supports a healthy lifestyle.
Also, academic stress and anxiety can affect student mental and physical health. "Universities are
making this investment to improve student life and retain students, but we think something more is
happening," Zelaya says. "Some might assume time at a gym is a distraction from academics, but it
is really part of the learning landscape" (Amy Patterson Neubert, 2013). Doing different kinds of
activities is effective, and creating a creation center or gym is one of the solutions that OIT can offer
to help students to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of anxiety among students in order to enhance
their academic performance. "Students who worked out at Purdue's gym at least once a week were
more likely to earn a higher grade point average than students who visited less or not at all"
(Neubert, 2013). I find this topic important because physical activity is necessary for overall public

The information can be used to support the idea of building the recreation center. It should also be
taken into consideration that there is extensive research which proves that academic success is
linked to physical exercise and well–being. According to research from Purdue University, "Bonnie
Tjeerdsma Blankenship, Purdue professor of health and kinesiology, says there is research that
shows how physical activity has a positive impact on student academic achievement, including
children preschool through 12th grade " (Nuebert, 2013). This is crucial to understanding why the
building of a recreation center can be determinative of student academic success. A healthy mind

Motivations Behind Altered Images : Feigned Realities
Motivations Behind Altered Images: Feigned Realities
In an increasingly visual society, wherein mediated information and reality are weaved together,
making it nearly impossible to distinguish what is real from what is represented, beauty may only
seem skin deep.
Each day we are constantly bombarded by images and messages from society and the media telling
us who, what, and how we should be. Nearly every magazine published boasts various headlines
promising fat blasting secrets or how to get flawless skin or how to get the man of your dreams.
There are infomercials on nearly every channel that try to convince women to take weight loss pills.
News feeds from social media sites are full of daily exercise routines. Magazine tabloids and ...

It is those unrealistic images that we see in the media that contribute to women's desire to be skinny
and perfectly toned, so, like the conditioned robots we are, we: perform, please, and perfect – to
eventually develop a self–destructive sense of self. Altered images and the generalizations of those
images in the media are, without doubt, becoming great contributors to lowering self–esteem in
people
Why are these impossible standards of beauty being imposed on women, the majority of whom look
nothing like the models that are being presented to them? Research indicates that the causes are
solely economic: by presenting a physical ideal that is difficult to achieve and maintain, the
cosmetic and diet industries are assured continual growth and profits. Since women are depicted as
extremely thin in the media, self–comparison to the images they are exposed to can lead to negative
consequences. "The Photoshopped woman isn't going away," writes Bekah Ticen, a senior in the
College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University, in an op–ed for the Purdue Exponent, the university's
student newspaper. "She graces the covers of magazines. You can find her in over–sexualized
advertising, her waist whittled away by the click of a mouse. We've all seen her, and we've all come
to the realization of the impossibility of her existence. The Photoshopped woman is not real. So why
do we insist on giving her power?"

The tuition fees for these colleges are somewhat similar. One similarity is the amount of tuition each
school has set. The annual tuition for Purdue is $23,002 per year (College Navigator). In
comparison, the annual tuition for IU Bloomington is $24,417 per year (College Navigator). One
difference, in this category, is what the tuition includes. The annual tuition estimates for Purdue do
not include personal or travel expenses (Big Future). On the other hand, the annual tuition for IU
Bloomington does include some personal and some travel expenses (Indiana University). Overall, in
this category, IU Bloomington is the best college choice because of what the tuition price includes.
Both of the colleges that were researched offer some form of financial aid to their students.
One similarity shown is the amount of students who received financial aid from the colleges
researched. Of the undergraduate students who enrolled at Purdue, 67% of those received financial

John Updike's A and P as a state of Mind by Nancy Lager This student sample by Nancy Lager is an
average paper. The author has used clear and simple grammar to put her points across. Thus, the
paper is suitable and easily understandable by both intellectuals and laymen. Also, every paragraph
of the student sample has the main idea. For instance, the first paragraph is the introduction of the
whole paper while the second paragraph talks about why Sammy did not like his place of work and
why he eventually quit. The third paragraph focuses on the location of Sammy place of work and in
the last paragraph. Nancy gives his views about the whole story. However, there are problems with

The Gap between International Students and Domestic Students
How to make friends with American students? Probably every international student had this
question when they first came to the United States. In Rebekah Nathan's book "My Freshman year,"
Nathan exchanges her college professor position back to a college student. This position exchange
helps Nathan to notices the separation between international students and domestic students. By
interviewing international students, Nathan concludes that American students are more self–
centered. She believes this individualism is one of the main reasons for the separation. The other
part Nathan observes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But her claim is not valid due to the excessive pathos usage; the fact that she draws the conclusion
from only interviewing the international students. Moreover, her book is not sufficient, because of
not having both side opinions from international students and American students.

The New Business Model Go After Sprint Purchased Radioshack
Our research for RadioShack consisted mainly of studying the RadioShack history, why would it
goes bankrupt in 2015, advantages and disadvantages of RadioShack comparing to Amazon, the
local RadioShack business in Purdue and how would the new business model go after sprint
purchased RadioShack. We found these information and studies for RadioShack are important
because they can help audiences to insight RadioShack and understand why would it goes bankrupt.
RadioShack Corporation is an American wireless and electronics company owned by the affiliate
General Wireless. It has 6,874 stores in U.S. In the same time, it has branch stores around the world,
which are in Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, France, The UK and the other countries. In 1921,
the company was started a small, wooden structure and selling radio equipment. In 1990s, the
company had developed as a wide business company and it was focusing on marketing wireless
phones, and it started to get into mainstream consumer markets and compete with big vendors like,
best buy and wart–mart. In 2015, Radio Shack is facing bankrupt and it delayed rent payments to
some commercial landlords. In the same time RadioShack is selling half of their stores to sprint and
closing the rest of the stores. According to the article The 5 Reasons Why RadioShack Went Out of

they try to figure out if their work needs citations. According to Stoley, Brizee and Paiz (2013)
common sense statements do not need citations. However, many times what we believe to be

Is Plagiarism Wrong
When it comes to writing a research paper, there are a lot of rules that need to be followed. I know
first–hand the consequences that may result from the lack of knowledge pertaining to not knowing
these rules. Although it may not be intentional, not knowing these rules could result in plagiarism.
Plagiarism is copying someone else's work without giving them the proper credit (Stolley, Brizee, &
Paiz, 2014).
Plagiarism is wrong because it takes someone else's ideas and thoughts and displays them as their
own. This is not acceptable because the original author was the one that put the time and effort into
the research for the paper. Looking into this, I have come to realize that this is basically cheating.

Goals To Become A Physical Therapist
Goals Goals are important to have in a life just to simply have a reason to fight for something. There
are different kinds of goals made for different times in life. There are certain goals made in high
school, college, a career, and one's personal life.
Goals made in high school should be made based on who you want to be as a person. The goal I
made for high school is to build a strong, healthy relationship with my friends. To achieve this I
must participate in extracurriculars. To be able to participate in those fun activities I must keep up
my attention and effort in my classes. Strategies to build good relationships with friends include:
being authentic, communicating, respecting people's choices, being empathetic, being supportive,
keeping promises, making time to make them feel important to you, being their personal
cheerleader, having fun, and trying new things.

Student Success In College Essay
When it comes to school, academic success is vitale to learning and being successful in college.
How students are involved during college effect's their success in school greatly. The more a student
is involved, the more invested and interested they will be. Therefore I think that the school should
encourage engagement with activities, and their peers. I believe that campus involvement would
improve student success here at Maple Woods because it develops productivity, and general interest
and pride in our school. There are many ways to become involved on campus. One way this can be
done is through clubs. Clubs on campus support a lot of extra curricular activities, especially
towards what you study. For example a pre–med student can get ... Show more content on

I asked Linda to to give me ideas to make students enjoy and do better at MCCKC Maplewoods.
She gave me ideas such as, getting to know professors, seeking help from advisors, and becoming a
student leader; However, one thing said by Lindsey that stood out to me was " Get involved in
school activities to get to know people better and do better in school". This is complementary to
what I stated in the essay earlier. The interview that I conducted with Ms. Langston supports what I
stated about how student involvement leads to academic success. The reason being, she herself has
experienced and seen the outcome among students that haven't been involved in extracurricular
activities on campus. She has also seen students that have been involved in extracurricular activities
and saw the positive outcome among those students. I explained my point of view on this matter
which was that I thought clubs, sports, community service, etc is progressive towards student
academic success on school campus. Ms. Langston agreed that any type of student involvement,
such as community service and extracurricular activities, have a positive effect on students school
performance and encouraged students to strive to be leaders among their community and not to be
afraid to ask for help when needed. Although student success can been linked to student
involvement, some believe that student organization and school activities distract students from their

Selecting The Next Chapter
Selecting the Next Chapter Eventually, we all reach the age at the end of our high school career
when we have to choose a path. The path that we select will guide each of us to the trail that we will
follow for the rest of our lives. Some of us will choose to go directly into the workforce, potentially
go to a trade school, or even go onto a post–secondary education in order to obtain a degree. What
decision we make then determines what the rest of our life will hold, how successful we can
possibly be, our yearly salary, and can introduce us to people who will play active roles throughout
our entire life.
Now, I am a senior in high school, and I have quickly found this decision right on my doorstep.
Over the past few years, I have had my eyes on several different post–secondary college options, but
I have narrowed this list quite significantly over the past few months based on factors like their
available majors, the college's size, and the extracurricular activities that are offered by the
institution. With this said, I have selected three colleges that have specifically caught my eye based
on these factors: Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky; Purdue University in West
Lafayette, Indiana; and Saint Mary–of–the–Woods College in St. Mary of the Woods, Indiana.
Majors Of course, when selecting colleges recently, it was necessary to pick those ones that
followed my interest base. Ideally, this would be to obtain a Master's Degree in Science for

African American Student Essay
Despite numerous misconceptions, African Americans who have attended HBCUs have thrived
tremendously. In fact, African American students that attend an HBCU are more likely to go on to
graduate from a professional school than African American graduates from other institutional types.
Brandon Busteed, an executive director who organized a survey about the matter under Gallup–
Purdue University stated, "There are still noticeable challenges around completion rates and loan
default rates, and this data doesn't change that...but this data does add a whole new dimension to the
conversation about the value of HBCUs. Black students are having very meaningful experiences at
HBCUs, compared to black graduates from everywhere else." (Busteed) Here we can assume what
Busteed analyzed from the survey was that despite the fact that HBCUs seem to have challenges, for
instance one that wasn't mention regarding how PWIs receive a substation amount of funding as
compared to HBCUs. In the face of all this the black students that do attend HBCUs are still

Controversy About The Value Of A College Education
he controversy about the value of a college education has been going on for many years. Many
people feel that college isn't worth it anymore. They believe that people are investing too much time
and money for something that doesn't assure you a better future. After doing research on the topic, I
believe that college is worth it for various reasons. Most of us go to college to have a better life and
get jobs where we are paid to have a stable life. A college degree can not assure you a high paid job
or a better future but research shows that people with degrees are making more money than people
that don't have one. College isn't always about the money. When seeking a college degree you learn
a set of skills that can help you later on in life. . Investing money into a college degree can have a

The study, by economists Jaison R. Abel and Richard Deitz, also found that a degree is still a good
investment for college grads whose jobs don't require college. About a third of all college graduates
remain underemployed for most of their careers. A person with a bachelor's degree can expect to
earn about $1.2 million more, from ages 22 to 64, than someone with just a high school diploma, the
report said. And someone with an asso– ciate's degree will bring in $325,000 more than someone
with a high school education.
When you get a degree in college it helps you make a lot of money, than somebody who doesn't even
have a degree. People who have a degree are already a step ahead in life than people still trying to
make up their mind on rather if they want to pursue college or get out and get a job. Which is
probably why so many high–schoolers still to this day can't figure out what they want to do with
their lives. The author

Development Of The Metropolitan Or Urban University Essay
Introduction
The metropolitan or urban university is one of the newer institutional models within the American
higher education system (Whitney, 2005). Initially, a group of academic leaders from t thirteen
urban institutions formed an alliance called "the Urban 13" and began meeting regularly to discuss
how their institutions were different from all other institutional models (Whitney, 2005).
Internationally institutions of higher education have maintained their importance for both their
regional and national economies and wellbeing. Even our European counterparts have increased
their attention and debates on the need for higher education institutions, with some concentrating on
having fewer institutions with a higher quality. As I young institution, only forty–seven years old,
Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) has and is continuing to go through
growth and establishing an identity as a regional campus. For this paper I will focus on Housing and
Residence Life at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis, and how it has grown since its
inception. strategic management within the Division of Student Affairs, is the ongoing development
of on–campus housing options for students. Housing and Residence Life directly impacts student
retention through programming, leadership opportunities, and product design. National research
consistently shows living on–campus results in students earning higher GPAs, reporting higher

John Wooden is a very famous coach who made something called the "Pyramid of Success". This
pyramid consisted 15 words that made up for someone's success. My favorite three words from this
pyramid are Friendship, Alertness, Intentness. Firstly, friendship is one of my favorite words
because it is something that I use in activites I am in so everyone feels like its a second family.
When I went to Science Olympiad for testing, a strong bond of friendship was formed between me
and a couple other of the students there, it really help create a form of unity that can only come from
a team. It really helped everyone's nerves that day and calmed down people's fears. My second word

Art Is Better Than Art School
The big debate in someone's head when they are a senior in highschool and are getting ready to
graduate is if they are planning to attend college, then what college to attend is the big question. For
students that want to pursue art in college, then the big question is if art school is the way to go or
"traditional" college with just a major in some medium of art. I believe that if anyone wants to be an
artist or wants to do something in the art field, that they would benefit more from an art school than
a school whose sole purpose is not to prepare students with access into the art world because of their
high quantity of like minded students, and it provides students with more time to focus directly on
artwork. Though it does generally cost more than a traditional university or college. At an art school,
the students are surrounded by other like minded students who all signed up for the same thing as
everybody else. Everybody around everyone is going through the same things. With the shared
mindfulness between students, everybody is in the same boat so everybody understands what is
going on. According to The Los Angeles Film School (2017) "Steven Guarnaccia, Associate
Professor of Illustration at Parsons The New School of Design, said: I think the greatest benefit of
going to art school is the shared experience of discovering, debating, and practicing one's craft and
ideas about art with a group of one's peers, under the tutelage of a skilled guide, i.e, the

Mackey Arena Game Analysis
Walking into Mackey Arena is like walking into a basketball shrine, filled with history. That history
is built upon the rivalry between Purdue and the school down south, Indiana University. On
February 28, I was fortunate enough to be in Mackey Arena for this historical rivalry game and
senior night, a game that meant Purdue could take the Big Ten Title in a win. Purdue did just that,
winning 86 to 75. I was very pleased with the game and it exceeded all expectations I had for the
huge rivalry. As a student who has been to every home game this season, I joined the lottery system
prior to the game so that I could get a closer seat than those who did not do the lottery. The lottery
began the night prior to the game where students camped out outside Mackey's atrium. I asked Sam
Kolczak, a student at Purdue who camped out for the IU game and the Villanova game back on
November 14, 2016, what he thought about the student involvement for games at Purdue. Kolczak
said, "I love camping out for these games. The people that do it are really cool and I've even made ...

Purdue this season has had a better season than they have had in the past, finishing at the top of the

on the road against them. I asked Kyle Graham, a senior at Purdue University and also a part of the
large senior group who goes to every game, how he felt about his last Purdue–IU game as a student.
Graham said, "It was actually amazing to see them win and do so in such great fashion. When I was

Un-Uniquely Oppressive. “The Point Of History Is To Learn
Un–uniquely Oppressive
"The point of history is to learn that our time is not uniquely oppressive." These wise words rang
through Purdue's Fowler Hall on the night of March 1st*, spoken by famed historian, Rice
University professor, and CNN contributor Douglas Brinkley as part of his Presidential Lecture
alongside Purdue President Mitch Daniels. During a time where bipartisanship has fallen by the
wayside and American politics are in upheaval, I went to Brinkley's lecture hoping to hear bipartisan
messages of hope and gain new insights into American political history and the future.

Daniels' next question was extremely pertinent to the events surrounding certain controversial and
orange skinned politicians. "How important is character and virtue in a president? Can you be great
without them?" I perked up at this question, this was what I had come here to gain more insight into;
are politicians supposed to be paragons of morality or must they simply be able to execute the duties
of political office? The reply did not dash my hopes to hear hopeful statements that night. Brinkley
stated, "I used to tell students the best presidents don't lie. Character is good, but you do things for
the public that might be deceptive, but are for the greater good." While I did not find this answer to
be particularly revolutionary, it did have a nice message to it. I believe presidents can't reveal every
state secret to the public, simply for the public peace of mind.
Brinley's next step in his talk was to highlight how people from opposing political parties can be
alike, despite ideological arguments, thus fulfilling the expectation that he would give hope in a time
of political party conflict. Yet again that night he chose to discuss the two political giants Roosevelt
and Reagan. As he highlighted the similarities between the two, audience members nodded and the
general atmosphere was quite positive. Brinkley pointed

Mental Wellness Analysis

My group and I collected data through Qualtrics the last few weeks. We collected data for the
Wellness Center at Purdue University's Recreational Center in order to create a successful plan for a
campaign to combat mental wellness. After many meetings with Dr. Perrault, we finally released our
survey out to the public. We mainly collected our data through an app known as "Group Me". This
app allows us to reach a large sum of students at once throughout different group chats. We had a
total of 134 people take our survey, most of the individuals were juniors which you can see in the
chart below. Our survey consisted of freshman to seniors at Purdue University. Most of our sample
size is unemployed, which we discussed could be a positive. We thought this could be a positive
because the students could possibly have more time to use the CoRec or alternative resources.
Furthermore, the additional demographic that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

reassured me that students really are not all that educated on where to go to improve their mental

Lastly, we found in our question, "what topics about mental wellness most interest you," that fitness
and nutrition both were the winning two. This didn't come as a shock since I think there is a need for
more knowledge spread out around campus about fitness and nutrition.
D. Conclusion
The kinds of messages that will be stressed in our campaign will be a variety of quotes from
students about fitness and nutrition. These messages will have emotional aspects to influence other
students who may be struggling with the same demons. We plan to educate freshman students about
the resources on campus in order to maintain or improve their mental

My Graduate At Purdue University
During my undergraduate at Purdue University, I did not understand the purpose of higher
education. I was oblivious to what I wanted to do or what was expected of me. My ambivalence
towards my education showed when I was academically dropped after the fall semester of 2008 with
an overall GPA of 1.69. Having been out of school for several years, I went back with the goal of
becoming a competent and caring physician. In my time off, I have been an entrepreneur, investor,
instructor, marketer, programmer, and a statistical analyst. Since coming back to school, I have had
the opportunity to be a teacher, a leader, and a father. Since reenrolling, I maintained a 3.68 GPA and
made the dean's list multiple times. When factoring my previous GPA from Purdue, I managed to
raise my overall undergraduate GPA to 3.05. The road that I took was unconventional and has left
me with experiences that helped build and shape my character, as well as, having strengthened my
resolve and passion for medicine.
Running my own business required me to take on many roles. This means performing the tasks
required, recognizing my own deficiencies, and rectifying them. I had to learn how to calculate
return on investment, manage backend databases, perform A/B split testing, and review turnover
analytics. The process of analyzing web traffic can be tedious when going through countless pages
of spreadsheets. In order to simplify the process, I taught myself how to program basic web apps in

Courage In Amelia Earhart
"Courage is the price that Life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no
release from little things."– Amelia Earhart. Life is not meant for the meek. It is not meant to be
lived in a box or in a comfort zone. As Amelia Earhart so eloquently put it, it takes courage to
experience peace in this life. I have had to embody that as I follow my dreams and fight for my
goals. My goal is to be a pediatric genetic counselor. To accomplish this goal, I have had to use
courage to face adversity, step outside my comfort zone, and strive for what I want. You can't just sit
back and wait for what you want. It's not enough to just say you want something and go through the
motions. You have to fiercely and actively seek out what you want and prove that you are the best
choice. It may not always work out in your favor, but it is better to fail then to never try at all.
"The soul that knows it not knows no release from the little things: knows not the livid loneliness of
fear." –Amelia Earhart. When trying to accomplish your goals, not everything will go as planned.
Very rarely will you just be handed what you want. When you work for something, sometimes you
will fail. You will be told you weren't the best choice or you were good, but just not what they were
looking for. And it hurts. It beats you down and steals your confidence. But failure is the best
teacher. Failure makes you stronger and builds you up to be the best you can. It can be challenging

Ball State University Research Paper
Right out of high school, what few choices do you have? Join the work force, do not get a job at all

Collegiate Education Is An Integral Part Of The Formation...
Collegiate education is an integral part of the formation of future successful adults. Traditionally, the
style of education that is received by college students is lecture–based. A professor stands in front of
a large classroom presented various facts with little to no participation by students. In recent years,
however, there has been a shift in some universities towards a more involved, participatory style of
teaching that incorporates a discussion–based classroom setting. These classrooms have been noted
to lead to a much more diverse and individually successful learner. Students in this type of
classroom gain the necessary skills to think for themselves and become creative and intelligent
members of the workforce. While some may argue that collegiate lecture–based learning is
necessary for a broader understanding of ideas, incorporating more participation into the classroom
from students creates a student that will be more independently creative, contributing more to
society. The reluctancy of major American universities to move more towards this style of education
is indicative of the financial priorities of American colleges outweighing educational goals. Lecture–
based learning is problematic for the college student because it is outdated and does not promote
learning as a process of analysis and personal discovery. Lecture–based learning is one of the oldest
teaching styles still used today. Originally, it was used out of necessity when books were not able to

Why College Is The Best School For Me
College is a big step in life for those who choose to attend it. Students are taken out of the high
school environment and placed into one with significantly more responsibilities and freedom. At
first glance, the vast number of choices for which college to attend will seem overwhelming, but
with careful research, one can drastically narrow the options down to the specific preferences that
the aspiring student may have. In my case, I have come to the conclusion that the Rose–Hulman
Institute of Technology would be the best school for me because of its rewarding campus life,
student body, and academics. When the essay prompt was first explained in class, I had no idea
where to begin in my search for the ideal college. The online databases ... Show more content on

Nevertheless, I am certain that Rose–Hulman is the most suitable for me.
Rose–Hulman's campus life allows for social interactions of all kinds that would assist someone in
my position. The campus is in–state, specifically in Terre Haute, which allows for convenient travel
between my school and home location. This factor of staying in reach of the people I know here in
Carmel essentially places less strain on relationships that I have the role of keeping intact. A steady,
communicative relationship with family members and close friends is key to success during college,
since many times the burden of school will weigh me down and I will need the support of others to
keep going. The suburban campus of RHIT with students having an easygoing as well as productive
lifestyle presents to me its most attractive qualities. According to the college's official website, their
campus is very "small, quiet, and picturesque" (Housing and Residence Life). Naturally with a
smaller suburban campus, there will be a smaller student body in which more people will be familiar
with one another. As a result social "cliques" will not be as prevalent when compared to urban
campuses, such as those of state universities. My preference as someone who grew up in the small
city of Carmel is to be familiar with its

Wilsonville Recreation Center

  • 1. Wilsonville Recreation Center Introduction The primary purpose of building a recreation center is to supply the Wilsonville campus with a community–based facility that encourages and supports a healthy lifestyle. Also, academic stress and anxiety can affect student mental and physical health. "Universities are making this investment to improve student life and retain students, but we think something more is happening," Zelaya says. "Some might assume time at a gym is a distraction from academics, but it is really part of the learning landscape" (Amy Patterson Neubert, 2013). Doing different kinds of activities is effective, and creating a creation center or gym is one of the solutions that OIT can offer to help students to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of anxiety among students in order to enhance their academic performance. "Students who worked out at Purdue's gym at least once a week were more likely to earn a higher grade point average than students who visited less or not at all" (Neubert, 2013). I find this topic important because physical activity is necessary for overall public ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The information can be used to support the idea of building the recreation center. It should also be taken into consideration that there is extensive research which proves that academic success is linked to physical exercise and well–being. According to research from Purdue University, "Bonnie Tjeerdsma Blankenship, Purdue professor of health and kinesiology, says there is research that shows how physical activity has a positive impact on student academic achievement, including children preschool through 12th grade " (Nuebert, 2013). This is crucial to understanding why the building of a recreation center can be determinative of student academic success. • 7. Motivations Behind Altered Images : Feigned Realities Motivations Behind Altered Images: Feigned Realities In an increasingly visual society, wherein mediated information and reality are weaved together, making it nearly impossible to distinguish what is real from what is represented, beauty may only seem skin deep. Each day we are constantly bombarded by images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. Nearly every magazine published boasts various headlines promising fat blasting secrets or how to get flawless skin or how to get the man of your dreams. There are infomercials on nearly every channel that try to convince women to take weight loss pills. News feeds from social media sites are full of daily exercise routines. Magazine tabloids and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is those unrealistic images that we see in the media that contribute to women's desire to be skinny and perfectly toned, so, like the conditioned robots we are, we: perform, please, and perfect – to eventually develop a self–destructive sense of self. Altered images and the generalizations of those images in the media are, without doubt, becoming great contributors to lowering self–esteem in people Why are these impossible standards of beauty being imposed on women, the majority of whom look nothing like the models that are being presented to them? Research indicates that the causes are solely economic: by presenting a physical ideal that is difficult to achieve and maintain, the cosmetic and diet industries are assured continual growth and profits. Since women are depicted as extremely thin in the media, self–comparison to the images they are exposed to can lead to negative consequences. "The Photoshopped woman isn't going away," writes Bekah Ticen, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University, in an op–ed for the Purdue Exponent, the university's student newspaper. "She graces the covers of magazines. You can find her in over–sexualized advertising, her waist whittled away by the click of a mouse. We've all seen her, and we've all come to the realization of the impossibility of her existence. The Photoshopped woman is not real. So why do we insist on giving her power?" I know first–hand the consequences that may result from the lack of knowledge pertaining to not knowing these rules. Although it may not be intentional, not knowing these rules could result in plagiarism. Plagiarism is copying someone else's work without giving them the proper credit (Stolley, Brizee, & Paiz, 2014). Plagiarism is wrong because it takes someone else's ideas and thoughts and displays them as their own. This is not acceptable because the original author was the one that put the time and effort into the research for the paper. Looking into this, I have come to realize that this is basically cheating. • 23. Student Success In College Essay When it comes to school, academic success is vitale to learning and being successful in college. How students are involved during college effect's their success in school greatly. The more a student is involved, the more invested and interested they will be. Therefore I think that the school should encourage engagement with activities, and their peers. I believe that campus involvement would improve student success here at Maple Woods because it develops productivity, and general interest and pride in our school. There are many ways to become involved on campus. One way this can be done is through clubs. Clubs on campus support a lot of extra curricular activities, especially towards what you study. She gave me ideas such as, getting to know professors, seeking help from advisors, and becoming a student leader; However, one thing said by Lindsey that stood out to me was " Get involved in school activities to get to know people better and do better in school". This is complementary to what I stated in the essay earlier. The interview that I conducted with Ms. Langston supports what I stated about how student involvement leads to academic success. The reason being, she herself has experienced and seen the outcome among students that haven't been involved in extracurricular activities on campus. She has also seen students that have been involved in extracurricular activities and saw the positive outcome among those students. I explained my point of view on this matter which was that I thought clubs, sports, community service, etc is progressive towards student academic success on school campus. Ms. Langston agreed that any type of student involvement, such as community service and extracurricular activities, have a positive effect on students school performance and encouraged students to strive to be leaders among their community and not to be afraid to ask for help when needed. • 33. Selecting The Next Chapter Selecting the Next Chapter Eventually, we all reach the age at the end of our high school career when we have to choose a path. The path that we select will guide each of us to the trail that we will follow for the rest of our lives. Some of us will choose to go directly into the workforce, potentially go to a trade school, or even go onto a post–secondary education in order to obtain a degree. What decision we make then determines what the rest of our life will hold, how successful we can possibly be, our yearly salary, and can introduce us to people who will play active roles throughout our entire life. Now, I am a senior in high school, and I have quickly found this decision right on my doorstep. Over the past few years, I have had my eyes on several different post–secondary college options, but I have narrowed this list quite significantly over the past few months based on factors like their available majors, the college's size, and the extracurricular activities that are offered by the institution. With this said, I have selected three colleges that have specifically caught my eye based on these factors: Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky; Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana; and Saint Mary–of–the–Woods College in St. Mary of the Woods, Indiana. Majors Of course, when selecting colleges recently, it was necessary to pick those ones that followed my interest base. Art Is Better Than Art School The big debate in someone's head when they are a senior in highschool and are getting ready to graduate is if they are planning to attend college, then what college to attend is the big question. For students that want to pursue art in college, then the big question is if art school is the way to go or "traditional" college with just a major in some medium of art. I believe that if anyone wants to be an artist or wants to do something in the art field, that they would benefit more from an art school than a school whose sole purpose is not to prepare students with access into the art world because of their high quantity of like minded students, and it provides students with more time to focus directly on artwork. My ambivalence towards my education showed when I was academically dropped after the fall semester of 2008 with an overall GPA of 1.69. Having been out of school for several years, I went back with the goal of becoming a competent and caring physician. In my time off, I have been an entrepreneur, investor, instructor, marketer, programmer, and a statistical analyst. Since coming back to school, I have had the opportunity to be a teacher, a leader, and a father. Since reenrolling, I maintained a 3.68 GPA and made the dean's list multiple times. When factoring my previous GPA from Purdue, I managed to raise my overall undergraduate GPA to 3.05. The road that I took was unconventional and has left me with experiences that helped build and shape my character, as well as, having strengthened my resolve and passion for medicine. Running my own business required me to take on many roles. This means performing the tasks required, recognizing my own deficiencies, and rectifying them. I had to learn how to calculate return on investment, manage backend databases, perform A/B split testing, and review turnover analytics. The process of analyzing web traffic can be tedious when going through countless pages of spreadsheets. In order to simplify the process, I taught myself how to program basic web apps in order to ... • 65. Personal Narrative: My Experience With Lafayette Police... I was lucky enough to be able to work with Lafayette Police Department for the last couple months. The experience has been awesome. I really believe that it has been the best experience I've had while at college. Going into my senior year I was not sure it was going to even be able to find any kind of internship before I left school. Once I was told about the internship program I was all for it. Lafayette was my first choice of departments that I wanted to go to for the field work. The other sites did not seem like they would fit what I was looking for in a department since I have wanted to join IMPD the whole time I've thought about law enforcement. Being able to go out on calls and experience calls first hand has been an awesome experience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is the perfect location for anyone who is looking to get more of a big city feel. West Lafayette is more of a college town and Purdue is all college students. Lafayette offers both the college feel because you get some of the students but you are also able to deal with bigger city problems like hardcore drugs. The Sheriff's Department would not have been bad since I was able to work with them some but they don't handle the same stuff with frequency like Lafayette does. The call volume was not too much or too little at Lafayette. There was just enough to keep the officers and I busy, which was the best part because a slow night was still a lot faster than other department's slow nights. All of the staff was extremely nice and courteous like I mentioned earlier. Sgt. Yestresbky is a standup guy. He would do anything I asked of him and was always trying to get me into as much stuff as he possible could. I couldn't have asked for a better supervisor either. Lafayette was a great place to be and I hope they will remain working with Purdue and the field practicum because I think they have a lot to offer to anyone who wants to pursue a career in law ... While pledging Phi Delta Chi I was honored when asked to be the pledge class treasurer after I had taken on the fundraising project. Now for my second year of involvement, I am the fundraising chair. As fundraising chair I organize events to raise money and lower dues for the chapter. This year I have been working with Purdue Athletics to run concession and in first 3 months of we have already reached our year goal. Along with my chair position, this summer I participated in a 3 day leadership development seminar, where we met with group advisor and focused on developing our leadership skills. We examined our personal behavior, developed goals for ourselves, and used roleplaying to practice. I also mentor a prospective brother and help her through the pledging process, answer questions about class, and encourage her pursuit of a career in pharmacy. • 72. Courage In Amelia Earhart "Courage is the price that Life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from little things."– Amelia Earhart. Life is not meant for the meek. It is not meant to be lived in a box or in a comfort zone. As Amelia Earhart so eloquently put it, it takes courage to experience peace in this life. I have had to embody that as I follow my dreams and fight for my goals. My goal is to be a pediatric genetic counselor. To accomplish this goal, I have had to use courage to face adversity, step outside my comfort zone, and strive for what I want. You can't just sit back and wait for what you want. It's not enough to just say you want something and go through the motions. You have to fiercely and actively seek out what you want and prove that you are the best choice. It may not always work out in your favor, but it is better to fail then to never try at all. "The soul that knows it not knows no release from the little things: knows not the livid loneliness of fear." –Amelia Earhart. When trying to accomplish your goals, not everything will go as planned. Very rarely will you just be handed what you want. When you work for something, sometimes you will fail. You will be told you weren't the best choice or you were good, but just not what they were looking for. And it hurts. It beats you down and steals your confidence. But failure is the best teacher. Failure makes you stronger and builds you up to be the best you can. It can be challenging to try again ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Ball State University Research Paper Right out of high school, what few choices do you have? Join the work force, do not get a job at all or go to college? After high school I want to go to college. Although there are many colleges here in the United States, there is one major limit I must follow when picking a college to go to. Since college costs a lot of money, I need to stay instate, which narrows down more than three–fourths of the colleges in the Untied States. Just because the top colleges I love are out, like Ohio State University, Michigan State or Michigan University, does not mean I did not have my eyes set out for some instate colleges. Some colleges in Indiana that have grabbed my attention enough and make me want to go there are IU Bloomington, Butler and Ball State. IU Bloomington is one of most known colleges here in Indiana. Right when I moved here to Indiana, I heard of this big rivalry between IU and Purdue. I never understood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is my older brothers first year there and he has told me countless great things about Ball State. While my brother has been there, he has told me that Ball State has introduced him to several new activities and friends. That is a major thing I look for in a good college is if I could connect with people well and get more involved with the school. Tuition for Ball State is not that expensive as other colleges and the acceptance rate is more than half. With my brother also taking criminal justice courses and criminology, he has informed me that the classes are interactive and the whole class is involved, no student is left out. That makes me want to go to Ball State because I am a person who learns from doing and with classes like that, I could learn more. Another reason I would not mind to go to Ball State is because some of my friends have expressed a wanting to go there. These three colleges are excellent but if I ever had to choose one, it would be a difficult ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Collegiate Education Is An Integral Part Of The Formation... Collegiate education is an integral part of the formation of future successful adults. Traditionally, the style of education that is received by college students is lecture–based. A professor stands in front of a large classroom presented various facts with little to no participation by students. In recent years, however, there has been a shift in some universities towards a more involved, participatory style of teaching that incorporates a discussion–based classroom setting. These classrooms have been noted to lead to a much more diverse and individually successful learner. Students in this type of classroom gain the necessary skills to think for themselves and become creative and intelligent members of the workforce. While some may argue that collegiate lecture–based learning is necessary for a broader understanding of ideas, incorporating more participation into the classroom from students creates a student that will be more independently creative, contributing more to society. The reluctancy of major American universities to move more towards this style of education is indicative of the financial priorities of American colleges outweighing educational goals. Lecture– based learning is problematic for the college student because it is outdated and does not promote learning as a process of analysis and personal discovery. Lecture–based learning is one of the oldest teaching styles still used today. Originally, it was used out of necessity when books were not able to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Why College Is The Best School For Me College is a big step in life for those who choose to attend it. Students are taken out of the high school environment and placed into one with significantly more responsibilities and freedom. At first glance, the vast number of choices for which college to attend will seem overwhelming, but with careful research, one can drastically narrow the options down to the specific preferences that the aspiring student may have. In my case, I have come to the conclusion that the Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology would be the best school for me because of its rewarding campus life, student body, and academics. When the essay prompt was first explained in class, I had no idea where to begin in my search for the ideal college. The online databases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, I am certain that Rose–Hulman is the most suitable for me. Rose–Hulman's campus life allows for social interactions of all kinds that would assist someone in my position. The campus is in–state, specifically in Terre Haute, which allows for convenient travel between my school and home location. This factor of staying in reach of the people I know here in Carmel essentially places less strain on relationships that I have the role of keeping intact. A steady, communicative relationship with family members and close friends is key to success during college, since many times the burden of school will weigh me down and I will need the support of others to keep going. The suburban campus of RHIT with students having an easygoing as well as productive lifestyle presents to me its most attractive qualities. According to the college's official website, their campus is very "small, quiet, and picturesque" (Housing and Residence Life). Naturally with a smaller suburban campus, there will be a smaller student body in which more people will be familiar with one another. As a result social "cliques" will not be as prevalent when compared to urban campuses, such as those of state universities. My preference as someone who grew up in the small city of Carmel is to be familiar with its ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
