133. Chandigarh administration was determined to construct a Commercial centre -
Convention Hall on a site occupied by a temple. The Land Acquisition Officer laid the
foundation stone to create terror.
The Temple authorities sought our help.
134. The local media was hand in glove with the District Administration which started planting stories
about the temple demolition. The media was behaving like his master’s voice
135. This is when we started investigation
We contacted four top archeological experts including Prof O P Bhardwaj a world renouned
indologist, Dr Ashwani Aggarwal Chairman, Department of Ancient History (Punjab University) ,
Dr Devendra Handa, former HoD Department of Ancient History and Architecture (Punjab
University) and Dr Lalman a field archelogoist. We recorded their statements on camera that it
was a Harappan Site. Initially no media was prepared to report this but we played our part
141. We had by now realized that the local media was puppets in the hands of the district
administration to the best approach would be to do things differently.
Before leaving Chandigarh:
We called up Arun Kumar the DC Chandigarh and told him that I had all the evidence
which I was going to take with me to Delhi where the Media was not under his influence.
I also not to do something like demolition of the temple or else he will be in trouble.
Next we visited the Governor House where Gen SF Rodrigues was the Governor of
Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. We had known him from Rakshak days and mentioned
to him the dangers if the district administration did something foolish
Back in Delhi :
Met some senior Congress Party leaders and the Ex Servicemen Cell
Met ADG Psy Ops in Army Headquarters and mentioned the dangers
Got the Shahi Imam of all Shia’s in India to condemn the move
Got several MPs to write to the Governor
Activated the Delhi Media
Filed a PIL
