Research in to the relevant gangster genre
1. In my recent research into the British Gangster
genre, I’ve analysed film openings, looked into
film history and now I’m going to present my
findings
2. What have been the most successful British
Gangster films?
I’ve looked at a few websites listing successful films
and I’ve found:
3. I’ve found that Rise of the Foot Soldier has been the
most popular and successful.
In my opinion Reservoir Dogs is the most successful
film, it was an independent film by a fresh director.
It was named “Greatest Independent Film of all
Time”. That’s a huge accomplishment.
It’s budget was $1.2 million and made a profit of
almost £6.5 million. It also launched Quentin
Tarantino’s career.
4. What have been the most profitable British
Gangster Films?
From my research I discovered that Snatch has been one of the most profitable British
Gangster film.
I couldn’t find any other British gangster films as
profitable as Snatch. It’s opening weekend wasn’t
great.. But the Gross makes up for it. There were
close others, such as:
Pulp Fiction
Layer Cake
5. What are the main conventions of an
opening to a British gangster film?
From what I’ve researched, a typical good start includes:
• Non-diegetic fast paced music
• An introduction to each character
• Close up shots/mid shots
• Credits of actors name or characters name
• Slow motion
• Freeze frames
