Focus Upon Creativity/Innovation For Growth
Imagination is more important than knowledge.
Knowledge is limited.
Imagination encircles the world."
Logic will get you from A to Z;
imagination will get you everywhere."
Creativity is intelligence having fun.
According to an investigation by the
International Assessment of Educational Progress
in 21 countries last year,
the mathematics ability of Chinese students ranks
first in the world, but they come
last for imagination and fifth bottom for creativity.

26. Potential Benefit: Explore “School of One” (Math) Concept
In a comparison of pre- and post-program test scores, students had an average increase of
28 percent in the number of test items they answered correctly. The New York City
Department of Education is betting on the project and will expand it into three city schools in
January, and five more next fall. Apparently, it is a good bet: School of One was named one of
Time magazine’s “50 Best Inventions for 2009.”

The program combines computer programs and live teaching. It also provides teachers with
detailed daily data about student progress. …. Because it's often hard to differentiate
between the individual needs of students who are on various proficiency levels, School of
One's online lessons are personalized for each student's ability and best style of learning, he
said. … In September, School of One will replace the math program for all sixth- and seventh-
graders at those three schools. Under the program, classrooms tend to be larger than usual,
with 100 to 120 students at a time with four or five teachers. Students rotate around the
room to get both computer time and teacher time. …
A study last year found that children in the summer program outperformed their peers in
math. Those in the program were able to increase their number of correct answers by 28
percentage points, compared with a rise of as much as eight percentage points in a
comparison group, and achieve those gains in one third the time, the study found
28. Potential Benefit:
“The Harkness Model”
The Harkness table
refers to a style of teaching
wherein students sit at a
large, oval table
with their teachers
It encourages classes to be
held in a discursive manner.
The main goal is to
encourage students to come
up with ideas of their own
and learn good reasoning
and discussion skills.
Depending on his or her style,
the teacher may interact very
little, interjecting only to
guide the discussion.

Partner with School District & Union
As a Learning Lab

Enhance the degree to which successful charter schools influence
the broader system by:
• Building relationships between school districts and charter
networks, especially those operating schools in-district;
• Piloting and expanding the core strategy elements in charters in
coordination with district partners; and
• Incubating innovative new school models and approaches, with
charters as early adopters.
