The song “Lines” was

REVERIE COVERS LUCY ROSE!
You heard it here first! Reverie
are realising a music video for
their new cover of Lucy Rose’s
hit song Lines! They still want
to take the story created by
Lucy Rose and capture the
heart break between girl and
guy but tell the story
themselves! You’ve probably
heard the song many of a time
on the radio but you haven’t
seen anything yet! Lucy Rose
signed over the rights to the
song way back in November
2012 but does she regret this
now the music video will be
hitting the charts. We asked
her how she feels! “I think it’s
great that an upcoming band
are using my words and
emotions to get their voices to
the charts and once they get
there then maybe they’ll get a
Reverie have stepped up the
game by taking the do-it-
yourself approach to creating
their music video by hiring
their close friend to film and
edit the music video for them
free of charge and recording
the music themselves using
their colleges resources. You
would have never heard of
Madonna taking this
approach with her music
video for “Vogue” released in
March 1990 costing millions
of dollars! Although the video
has been ranked as one of the
greatest of all times in
different critic lists and polls,
and won three awards at the
1990MTV Video Music
Awards out of a total of nine
nominations.
“I think it’s great that
an upcoming band are
using my words and
emotions to get their
voices to the charts…”

an odd shake to it. Is this due
to the scene being a memory?
This isn’t put clearly in the
music video and Reverie
should maybe look back into
this. We are then taken back
to see the band which is done
at a perfect point in the song
and you can clearly see the
band are taking you through
the story. A little later in the
video when we are back to
the band performing the shot
is overlapped with the girl
from the what we’re going to
call memories which links the
band with the characters
which hasn’t be done
previously. As the song comes
to the end the characters
walk back (one following the
other in an odd stalker
manner) and I couldn’t help
but notice the shot has been
flipped and they’ve reused a
shot from earlier on in the
video. Is this done for a
particular reason or are they
just filling space? This needs
Yes it’s cheap or in Reverie’s
case completely free but is it
really the best way to go if
you’re up and coming?
Shouldn’t you fork out a little
bit of money to get your foot
through the door? Don’t get
me wrong their music video
for their cover of Lucy Rose’s
song “Lines” is well made but
is it good enough for the big
channels playing along next to
other Indie music videos like
Biffy Cliro or Passenger? It
starts off with a positive
beginning, the band
performing the song in what
looks like a small venue which
introduces the band nicely as
this is their first official music
video so they wouldn’t have
been seen outside gigs before.
It then goes onto a shot of an
unhappy couple and you
instantly get the feel of
heartbreak which was
mentioned earlier! The
location works really well
along with the genre of the
song although the camera has
to be cleared up! Do I think
this video could be shown on
such music channels like MTV
and VIVA? No, Do I think that
with improvements it could?
Yes! Reverie definitely has
talent and could go far there’s
no question about it but they
just need to work on a few
minor improvements before
they get there and good luck
to them!
3. Once upon a time
independent meant you
didn’t need help from others
although now the genre term
“indie” may include music
that is not independently
produced, and most
independent music artists do
not fall into a single, defined
musical style or genre and
usually create music that can
be categorized into other
genres. So although Reverie
have recorded, filmed, editing
and produced everything
independently they are still
going to have to compete
with artists that have been
signed and have loads of
money to create a music
video of better quality! Does
this seem fair?!
Reverie’s cover of Lucy Rose’s
song Lines sits nicely along
with other indie music videos
in terms of characteristics! The
band is shown often
performing in small venues
throughout the video which
although is done across many
different music video genres
it’s particularly common in
indie due it being expensive to
film footage for the whole 4
minutes and they can re-use
gig footage from their past
performances.
Although the gig footage is in a
different location all the fresh
new footage is based in
the same location to save on
travel and separate day
equipment hire, this again
saves money as independent
bands work on low cost.
DOES INDEPENDENT STILL HAVE A MEANING?

4. IT’S ALL ABOUT
THE AUDIENCE
Back to Reverie’s music video
for “Lines” throughout the
video men are very negatively
represented. For example the
music video makes it appear
that the heart ache is entirely
the guys fault and he doesn’t
appear particularly upset
about this which is definitely
shown in the scene that he’s
walking towards the camera
and the girl is walking away.
This would show that the
music video is aimed more at
female viewers than male due
to the representation and
they want to capture girls
that feel the same way as the
girl in the video does.
Although gender plays a big
part of Reverie’s music video
age doesn’t as much.
Although the characters are
both around the age of 18 the
situation they are in could
happen at any age.
You never know what to
expect when watching a new
indie music video as each and
every one are so different as
there really aren’t any rules
when it comes to what goes
and what stays out. So what
sort of audience do you look
for when researching? That
depends more on the contents
of the song than the genre.
The lyrics to the song “Lines”
can be heard in different ways
so I don’t believe many people
could expect what was going
to come from the music video.
For example the lyrics for
Taylor Swifts song “we are
never ever getting back
together” give a clear storyline
so when the music video came
out you knew what to expect
or along those lines anyway!
5. Fo
They’re new, they’re

to be big! Why not catch
them before all your friends
know them? Before all your
class mates are talking about
them? Before their ticket
prices go up! Experience their

they interoperate Lucy Rose’s
song Lines.

Indie music should be created
independently and low cost!
Reverie has bought this to life
with their music video
showing how music videos
should be created. Music
videos show show another
side to the lyrics not just be
an excuse to dress up in fancy
clothing and drive fancy cars
it should be a story along
with the lyrics.
