5. FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT:
• Flexible pavement is composed of a bituminous material surface course and
underlying base and subbase courses. ... Theflexible pavement design is based on
the load distributing characteristics of a layered system. It transmits load to the
subgrade through a combination of layers.
8. Construction of sub-base
• Materials-selected soil,moorum,gravel,aggregate maximum 50mm.
• Construction method-the sub base is constructed by spreading the loose
soil and compacting the same at optimum moisture content of the soil in
layer.
• The maximum compacted of thickness of each layer is generally limited to 250mm
.
9. Construction of base course
(wet mix macadam)
• Material used-hard crushed aggregate and
adequate proportion of water mixed .
• Construction steps –
• The wmm mix is transported to the site and
spread using self propellrd type paver finisher
machine .
• Wmm layer is compacted using a vivratory roller
of minimum static weight of 10 tonnes. And
compacted thickness is less than 200mm. After
the wmm layer is dried for at least 42 hours in dry
weather.
10. Bituminous macadam
• Bituminous macadam consits of aggregate and appropriate binder,mixed
in a hot plant and laid with a machanized paver.
• It is an open graded mixture suitable for base course and is laid ina a single
course or in multiple layers on a perviously prepared base.

• Bitumen is a black, oily, viscous material that is a naturally-occurring organic
• byproduct of decomposed organic materials. Also known as asphalt or tar.

13. CAMBER
Road Camber height depends upon
•Rainfall intensity in the area.
•In case of flexible pavement, the recommended height of
camber is 2 %. of the total width of the pavement
curvature of the road to avoid
staying of water is known as
camber
15. SHOULDERS
Shoulders are provide along the road edge and intented
for accommodation of stop vehicles serve as an
emergency land for vehicles.
