1. The South Atlantic
The South Atlantic United States form one of the nine Census Bureau Divisions within the United States. This
division includes eight states and one district; Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South
Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Together with the East South Central States (Alabama,
Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee) and the West South Central States (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and
Texas), the South Atlantic States constitute the United States Census Bureau's broader Census Bureau Region of the
South (the other three regions being the Northeast, Midwest, and West, all of which have two divisions).

Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, "the District", or
simply D.C., is the capital of the United States. Named in honor of George Washington, the City of Washington was
founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital.
The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are in the District, including the
Congress, president, and Supreme Court.
The Potomac River forms the District's border with Virginia and has two major tributaries: the Anacostia River and
Rock Creek.
The National Mall is a large, open park in downtown Washington between the Lincoln Memorial and the United
States Capitol. Given its prominence, the mall is often the location of political protests, concerts, festivals, and
presidential inaugurations. The Washington Monument and the Jefferson Pier are near the center of the mall, south
of the White House. Also on the mall are the National World War II Memorial at the east end of the Lincoln
Memorial Reflecting Pool, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Directly south of the mall, the Tidal Basin features rows of Japanese cherry blossom trees that originated as gifts
from the nation of Japan. The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, George Mason Memorial, Jefferson Memorial,
Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and the District of Columbia War Memorial are around the Tidal Basin.
The National Archives houses thousands of documents important to American history including the Declaration of
Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

2. Virginia
Virginia officially the Commonwealth of Virginia. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond. Virginia is divided
into 95 counties and 38 independent cities.
Geographically and geologically, Virginia is divided into five regions from east to west: Tidewater, Piedmont, Blue
Ridge Mountains, Ridge and Valley, and Appalachian Plateau.
The state nickname is its oldest symbol. Virginia was given the title "Dominion" by King Charles II of England at the
time of The Restoration, because it had remained loyal to the crown during the English Civil War, and the present
moniker, "Old Dominion" is a reference to that title. The other nickname, "Mother of Presidents", is also historic, as
eight Virginians have served as President of the United States, including four of the first five. The state's motto, Sic
Semper Tyrannis, translates from Latin as "Thus Always to Tyrants", and is used on the state seal, which is then used
on the flag.
Virginia has 30 National Park Service units, such as Great Falls Park and the Appalachian Trail, and one national park,
the Shenandoah National Park. Additionally, there are 34 Virginia state parks and 17 state forests.

The Piedmont region is known for its dialect's strong influence on Southern American English. While a more
homogenized American English is found in urban areas, various accents are also used, including the Tidewater
accent, the Old Virginia accent, and the anachronistic Elizabethan of Tangier Island.

Festivals:
Many counties and localities host county fairs and festivals. The Virginia State Fair is held at the Meadow Event Park
every September. Also in September is the Neptune Festival in Virginia Beach, which celebrates the city, the
waterfront, and regional artists. Norfolk's Harborfest, in June, features boat racing and air shows. Fairfax County
also sponsors Celebrate Fairfax! with popular and traditional music performances. The Virginia Lake Festival is held
during the third weekend in July in Clarksville. On the Eastern Shore island of Chincoteague the annual Pony Swim &
Auction of feral Chincoteague ponies at the end of July is a unique local tradition expanded into a week-long
carnival.
FLORIDA
Due to its large number of immigrants and American citizens who move to Florida from all over the US (especially
from the Northeast and New England), there are a wide variety of different regional accents of English spoken in
Florida. The most common American English accents spoken, besides General American English, can be divided by
the east and west coasts of Florida.
