Monthly Class Newsletter[October] [ACADEMICS]BiomesWe are beginning a new unit for October. The unit will consist of discussing the different biomes that exist on Earth. Students will gain knowledge about the different of factors that create a biome such as weather, animal life, plant life, etc.I will provide a series of lectures and assessments to make sure the students understand the concepts of the new unit. There will be a special project that students will work together in groups of 3-4. Each student will be assessed individually as well as a group. At the end of the unit, I will give a unit test.The students will have taken notes throughout the unit, opportunities for research to learn more information about each topic/concept. Each student will participate in the group project. Parents please help by making sure your child is completing his/her homework and reviewing test materials. I will send home a study guide 3-4 days before the test so each student will have time to prepare and study.Special ProjectThe students will be divided into small groups of 3-4 students. The students conduct research on one particular biome and gather the necessary material. Once they have acquired their resources, they showcase their biome in a visual, informative way. Some possible choices are a poster, postcard, poem, fiction writing piece, PowerPoint presentation, travel brochure, scrapbook, and jeopardy game. What exactly is it? How will your child become familiar with it? Project-based Learning is defined as is the use of classroom projects, intended to bring about deep learning, where students use technology and inquiry to engage with issues and questions that are relevant to their lives. These classroom projects are used to assess student's subject matter competence compared to traditional testing.(wikipedia.com) Your child will be introduced to Project-Based Learning this year through a variety of ways. Each unit will allow students to work in groups and sometimes individually to further research and discover more information about the topics we will be discussing. Students will put together presentations such as PowerPoints/brochures etc, to share their information with the class.
