5. BIBLE READING IN CLASS
Genesis 37.1-4,11,18,23,24,28
1 - And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojourning, in the land
of Canaan.
2 – These are the generations of Jacob: Joseph being seventeen years
old, he was feeding the sheep with his brothers; and he was with the
children of Bila and with the children of Zilpa, his father's wives; and
Joseph brought their father a bad name,
3 - And Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was
the son of his old age; and made him a coat of many colors.
6. 4 - When his brothers saw that their father
loved him more than all his brothers, they hated
him and could not speak peaceably with him.
11 - His brothers therefore envied him; his
father, however, kept this business in his heart.
18 - And they saw him from a distance, and
before he came to them, they conspired against
him to kill him.
7. 23 – And it came to pass that, when Joseph came
to his brothers, they took away his tunic from
Joseph, the tunic of many colors that he was
wearing.
24 - And they took him and cast him into the pit;
but the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
28 – As the Midianite merchants passed by; They
took Joseph out of the pit and lifted him up and
sold Joseph for twenty pieces of silver to the
Ishmaelites, who took Joseph down to Egypt.
8. INTRODUCTION
The story of Jacob's sons is not only moving, but dramatic.
Joseph, the patriarch's beloved son, was the target of his brothers'
jealousy. It is true that Jacob had a certain preference for him.
Therefore, he became a trusted person of the old father. Joseph
reported all his brothers' evil deeds to the family patriarch. For
that reason, they saw him as a snitch and deserving of their
hostility. Today's lesson is not intended to deal with the general
aspects of Joseph's story, but to emphasize this conflicting
relationship within Jacob's family. Let's see the consequences for a
family where envy and jealousy are present.
KEYWORD: JEALOUS
9. I - FAILURE IN THE TREATMENT OF
THE CHILDREN
1- Jacob's preference. In Genesis 37, we read that “Jacob loved
Joseph more than all his sons” (Gen. 37:3). It is possible that the
patriarch sensed that there was something special about Joseph.
However, regardless of being the son of his old age, Joseph was one
of the many sons he had fathered. Naturally, when they are aware of
their paternal and maternal role within the home, parents realize the
differences in personality and temperament of each of their
children. Therefore, it takes a lot of attention in the relationship
with them.
10. In lesson 2, we studied about the problem that was generated
by the predilection of Isaac and Rebekah between Esau and
Jacob. Here, in the story of Joseph, we will see that Jacob's
predilection produced jealousy and envy among the brothers,
the serious consequences of this practice within the family.
11. 2- Jealousy in the midst of
preference. Jacob did not measure the
consequences when he presented his
son Joseph with “a cover of many
colors” in a clear attitude of preference.
This provoked jealousy in the other
children, who understood that the father
did not give them due value. Now
Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob,
and when the elders felt alienated from
their father's love, they were filled with
fury. They saw that this special attire
signified favoritism on the part of the
father and, therefore, “they hated him”
(v.4).
12. 3- Envy does not allow us to understand God's plans.
In addition to this father's gift to Joseph, there were also
Joseph's dreams that always placed him in superiority in
relation to his brothers. The dream of the sheaves of wheat
and the dream of the heavenly bodies bowing down to
Joseph (vv.5-9), when told to his brothers, made them
understand that Joseph acted with arrogance and spite
towards them and, therefore they rejected him. Dreams had
a prophetic character, but his brothers understood it as a
presumptuous attitude on Joseph's part. They could not see
what would happen a few years later, when Joseph became
governor of Egypt (Gen. 41:41-43).
13. SYNOPSIS I
Jacob had a
favoritism for his son
Joseph. Such a
practice harmed his
family and provoked
dissension among
the brothers.
14. II – JEALOUS AS A CAUSE OF CONFLICTS
1- The tunic: the symbol of contempt. The traditional
clothing of the ancient people had at most two colors,
made of thick linen threads. Joseph's “colored tunic”
placed him in a prominent position in relation to the other
sons (Gen 37.3). This corroborated Jacob's feeling of
predilection for Joseph. The jealousy derived from this bad
attitude of the patriarch promoted sad consequences in
Jacob's family.
15. 2- Jealousy: the agent of family conflict. Joseph's
brothers felt ignored by their father. On the other hand,
because he enjoyed his father's favoritism, Joseph acted
with inexperience, immaturity and arrogance. His
brothers, with their pride hurt because of their paternal
preference for Joseph, would not even accept listening
to Jacob's favorite son. Therefore, they were filled with
resentment and hatred, even wanting to end their
brother's life.
16. Jealousy is an emotion that stems from
selfishness. It is like an infection that
spreads in the sick body. Envy,
resentment and hatred generally have
their source in jealousy, as the wise
Solomon declared: "[...] jealousy stirs up
fury [...]" (Proverbs 6:34). In the New
Testament, the apostle Paul shows that
everything that causes strife and
dissension has its origin in the flesh (1 Co
3.3). Jealousy is a work of the flesh.
17. 3- The extent of jealousy. In the present lesson, we have
analyzed jealousy in the sibling relationship, but it is present
in many other relationships. Jealousy can bring problems to
marital life, sincere friendships and professional relationships,
etc. Generally, where jealousy is present, there is more
displeasure and disgust than happiness. In an environment
where jealousy dominates, distrust, insecurity, control and
possession remain. Although everyone is jealous, as it is a
human emotion, the line between controlled and
uncontrolled jealousy is very thin.
18. SYNOPSIS II
In Jacob's family we can see that
jealousy is a work of the flesh and,
when cultivated, greatly harms
human relationships.
19. III - THE EVIL OF JEALOUS
1- Jealousy can cause family tragedies. There are not
few reports of marital tragedies in which jealousy is the
cause. There are many cases in which people harm others
because of jealousy. It was no different in the time of Jesus,
when the priestly caste became jealous and envious because
of the extent of our Savior's earthly ministry (Mark 15:10).
20. 2- Jealousy among the saints of God. If, in general,
obsessive jealousy arises on the part of one of the
spouses, almost always ending in violence, separation
and mutual offenses, unfortunately, among the saints
of God, jealousy can also undermine the relationships
of people who were once close. Thus, out of jealousy,
one slanders, defames and offends a brother in Christ
or a colleague in the ministry. May the Holy Ghost
guard our hearts so that they bear the fruit of love,
and “let us not be greedy for vainglory, provoking one
another, envying one another” (Gal 15:25).
21. 3-Overcoming jealousy. First,
you need to feed your mind with
the things of God (Phil 4:8). What
we think and what is in our heart
determine our actions (PV 4.23).
Secondly, it is very important to
know if the emotion of jealousy is
impacting and compromising the
quality of life. If the finding is
affirmative, it is important to seek
pastoral help that, based on the
Word, advise wisely.
22. And finally, consider very carefully what the apostle
Paul taught about love: “Love is long-suffering and
kind; love is not envious; love does not treat lightly, it
is not puffed up” (1 Corinthians 13:4). The Word of
God is still the best antidote for treating negative
emotions.
23. SYNOPSIS III
Obsessive jealousy almost always results
in violence, separation, and mutual
insults in marriage. It also undermines
the relationships of friends and siblings.
24. CONCLUSION
The emotional ardor called "jealousy" must be stopped
from continuing its course of moral, physical, and spiritual
destruction. The apostle Paul advises us to walk worthy and
avoid strife and jealousy (Rm 13.13). The only way to stop
the destructive power of jealousy is to develop the "fruit of
the Spirit" (Gal 5:22). This develops our soul for the
practice of Christian virtues and, at the same time, weakens
human emotions arising from the vices of the soul.
