2. FOOTBALL VS. DITATORSHIP
• In 1978, the FIFA
WORLD CUP was held
in Argentina. During
this period, the
country was directed
by a «de facto»
government.
• The main question is:
How was it possible
for the Argentineans
to celebrate the Cup,
when thousands of
citizens were missing?
3. Can you get used to this?
ANGER
IGNORANCE
SUFFERING
TORTURE
DISAPPEARANCE
REPRESSION
SILENCE
4. 1978-Nowadays
Lack of information was a characteristic of this
period. No one could certainly know what was
happening.
Nowadays, there is plenty of resources from
where you can get material about this period.
But not all of them deal with the subject in the
same way. Let me give you an example:
5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU-JcRjGWFY
• If you watch this video, you can notice that
almost no information is showed about the
dictationship, and that its main focus are the
matches.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTyMCif-dT0
• As regards this video, its purpose is to inform
about the two realities that Argentina was facing:
the goals and the deaths. The story presented
here contrast with the ignorance that appears in
the video above.
6.
7. • Seldom do I watch videos about Videla, but
this one caught my attention:

uc
• It was listening him speak in that way, denying
all the disappearances and the deaths, what
hacked me off. How can a human being be so
un-human?
8. Finally, I want to state my opinion about this
theme. It is tough for me (and for most of the
Argentineans) to talk about this. Not because we
feel prejudice against the dictatorship, but
because we are completely aware of all the
tortures and disappearances that occurred, and
this give us an absolutely horror feeling.
The world cup of 1978 should have never been
placed in Argentina. The Argentinean people
was fighting against something bigger than a
football match, they were fighting for freedom
of expression. And, overall, they were fighting
for their lives.
