The three stages of labor and delivery are:
Stage I, Dilation
The uterine muscles contract to push the baby down to the cervix.
This pressure makes the cervix expand or dilate to 10 centimeters.
Stage II, Expulsion
Once dilation is complete, the baby’s head begins to crown (if breech it
will be the baby’s buttocks) and pushing can begin until the baby is
fully delivered.
Stage III, Placenta
After the baby is delivered, the uterus will continue to contract until
the placenta and/or afterbirth is out.
