PRESENTER: RUTH
Thank you Tonia! Hello Everyone! It is so exciting to be here with you today. Make no mistake about it, the women on the video we just saw and on this slide, blazed a trail and stand for breaking the mold, redefining leadership and lifting others as well as themselves. THAT is the spirit of the WLC.
All of us here are signing up for this mission:
To drive growth and innovation
With the single most powerful ideal: developing and retaining diverse and competitive leaders.
Taking care of people comes first. The business success will follow.
PRESENTER: RUTH
How do we deliver on this mission? What should be our collective mindset? Our Guiding Principles?
Here are mighty 7:
WORKING FOR THE GREATER GOOD OF ALL looking at the whole of UCI. Not just our teams, our divisions and our experience but rather broadening THE LENS and having a higher purpose to serve at large.
RAISING THE BAR leading by example and setting high goals… those that get us out of our comfort zone
PERFORMING AT OUR FULL POTENTIAL by becoming self-aware and pushing ourselves to be better. Without self-awareness we don’t show up as our best selves. Full Potential is born from WITHIN
Having “SCALEBLE IMPACT” by organizing ourselves around community and advocacy and by extending our footprint beyond UCI. Scalable impact requires us to focus and prioritize. We can do that.
CELEBRATING WOMANHOOD. As women, we bring a unique perspective and life experience. We should always be reminded that it is more than OK to own womanhood
PROMOTING COLLABORATION AND INNOVATION. Not only are these two company values but are at the core of what do in this company. WE are so passionate about our mission to inform, empower, entertain and advocate for Hispanic America. Collaboration and innovation are game changing and the only way UCI can REACH HIGHER.
BEING THE SOLUTION: This goes beyond the WLC; It inspires others to follow us.
PRESENTER: RUTH
The opportunity that we have is to CREATE A BRIGHTER FUTURE so let’s think big and explore how we can:
INFLUENCE POLICY and take a hard look at how we can increase productivity, job satisfaction and life/work balance
GAIN A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF OUR INDUSTRY’S CHALLENGES IN RECRUITING AND RETAINING DIVERSE LEADERS. And by diverse I invite us to look beyond gender and ethnicity and take a hard look at WHO we need to train/hire with domain expertise in technology, social media, corporate responsibility and supply chain just to name a few. We are accountable for creating an environment that reward new thinking and positive results. This is what will make recruiting and retaining the best people possible.
Ultimately, the WLC must ENHANCE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL AND COMMIT TO PROVIDE ACCESS to leadership, mentorship, sponsorship and information…..THAT is what “in it for you”
PRESENTER: RUTH
In order to do this we see a two pronged approach between National and local initiatives. Here’s the amazing thing…The WLC is already doing it! Thanks to all of you, we have taken ground. The seeds where planted here in LA, NY and Miami and we have some learnings and early wins that we are going to share with you.
For example, we realized that “One size does not fit all” and that we need to make sure we focus and prioritize to truly make a difference
So here is how it works:
A NATIONAL AGENDA with programs and initiatives that everyone can participate in.
And UNIQUE LOCALIZATION programming such as some of the ones you have started here to feed the national agenda and suit people and market needs
This approach guaranties that we have a two-way dialogue and local communities have a voice. To talk to us more about this, I would like to introduce Ninoska Zucconi, Vice President of Distribution Marketing to share very exciting news and direction on the National Agenda.
PRESENTER: NINI
Thank you. As Ruth mentioned, now is the time to take the seeds planted in LA, Miami and New York and grow them across the UCI community. We want to take our best practices and deliver programs and initiatives for the entire company. But first, WE NEED YOU! The WLC is only as good and effective as the members we serve. We want to create an organized group that becomes the collective voice driving change at UCI.
All are welcome…men and women alike! Our goal is to enroll 35% of UCI employees in 2014, so enroll today and take the reins of your career. Participation is easy. All you need to do is subscribe to the monthly WLC Voices newsletter and you are automatically registered. You will immediately join the conversation and receive alerts about our upcoming events.
And membership certainly comes with great benefits. The WLC gives you the tools to define your career journey:
Whether you're striving to become more effective in your current position or aspiring to take your career to the next level, the WLC can provide you with educational events and experiences to help escalate your career and further your professional development.
By becoming an active member and getting involved in your local communities, you will have the opportunity to cultivate powerful relationships and surround yourself with like-minded colleagues.
Let us be your advocate. When you need support or would like to learn about advancement opportunities, don’t you feel better knowing the WLC is in your corner? I know I do.
Further, we plan to launch a resource center early next year that will offer you comprehensive information and tools gleaned from our national and local programs. Only the WLC will give you access to these online resources.
PRESENTER: NINI
We have four core pillars to guide all WLC programming both at the national and local levels. These common themes were identified as part of our learnings and best practices from the three founding communities.
First, we want to enhance opportunities for all and commit to providing ACCESS to leadership, mentorship, sponsorship and information. We want our national and local programs to help each of you build your own sphere of influence.
We also want everyone to be inspired. On both the national and local level, we plan to invite outside guest speakers to host leadership forums and speakers series intended to motivate us to take charge of our careers.
ADVOCACY is not only about giving back to our communities, but also about helping each other succeed. Among our annual initiatives are plans to demonstrate our commitment to giving back to several non-profit organizations while driving the WLC mission.
There is no better way to deliver the company than by constantly building and developing leaders. This is one of our fundamental pillars. The WLC is laser focused on developing the next generation of leaders and creating opportunities to help people reach their highest potential.
PRESENTER: NINI
The National Women’s Academy is just one example of how the WLC has already affected change and raised the bar at UCI. Two years ago, a group of us came together with Randy, Bob, Tonia and many others in New York to discuss how we could help employees at all levels take ownership of their individual development.
One opportunity we identified was the large number of women in middle management roles that did not have the proper tools or resources to advance into higher leadership positions. And as Ruth mentioned, taking care of our people first is the only way to ensure the success of our company.
I never would have imagined when I suggested the idea of launching a leadership program for Miami…that it would grow so quickly and become one of the development programs the company would fully get behind and roll out nationally.
We are thrilled to announce that in 2015 the Women’s Leadership Academy will be open by application to all WLC members across the country, men and women. The national program will launch with a class of more than 30 participants that are Director level and below.
We will continue to build a six-month long curriculum, specially tailored to our UCI community…in partnership with a renowned business school or reputable leadership institute. Participants will not only be able to hear from UCI’s leading executives about our business and industry, but also leverage the knowledge and expertise of world class business faculty to become well-rounded, prepared leaders.
I can think of no better legacy to leave behind for and organization so focused on growth and its employees so focused on its success. I want to take this opportunity to thank Jessica Rodriguez, Silvia Garcia, Leilani Garrido and all of the other community leaders in Miami whose dedication and commitment resulted in bringing one of my passion projects to life and making this dream come true for me and so many future leaders at UCI.
PRESENTER: NINI
We are proud to report that last year we graduated a class of 16 women leaders in Miami, 7 of whom have been promoted to positions of higher responsibility within one year of graduation…that’s nearly 45% of the students.
And next week, our second class of 26 will graduate, bringing the number of women leaders we’ve developed to 42 in Miami. These women represent the “best of the best” from diverse areas of our business including the agency, programming, research, distribution, legal and more.
We couldn’t be happier more proud of how the pilot of the Women’s Leadership Council Academy in Miami has nurtured the potential for our national program, and look forward to inviting all interested employees to apply and become UCI’s next generation of Leaders.
I would now like to take this opportunity to welcome Monique Rodriguez, Social Media Manager for UCI and 2013 inaugural class graduate to talk about her experience in the academy and share what the program has meant to her.
PRESENTER: MONIQUE
PRESENTER: ARIELA
Thank you Monique, as many of you in the room know, my name is Ariela Nerubay and I have been involved in the WLC LA Community from the start.
I’d like to share with you my experience from a local perspective, and hope to encourage each and every one of you to raise your hand and get involved….
If after listening to everyone who has spoken today, what comes to mind is “what’s in it for me?” “I don’t really have the time” “There is no community in my city anyway” “I don’t even know where to start”
My answer to you is:
Being part of the WLC LA Community has given me the opportunity to meet and befriend some of the smartest, boldest and most talented, go getter woman at Univision and the industry…
I have been able to bring initiatives to live – like the brown bag lunches that many of you have already attended…
I have been given access to our amazing leaders like: Randy, Bob, Tonia, Jessica…
And as Sheryl Sandberg would say…I was able to lean in and be seen…So I invite you to lean in too…
I invite you to make time to propel YOUR career here at Univision, by getting involved, getting access and adding value through your participation.
PRESENTER: ARIELA
As you can see on the screen, the steering committee has worked very diligently to put together a robust calendar of activities.
These activities reflect some of the best programming practices implemented so far, by each of the three initial communities.
There will be both, national and localized efforts, and each local community will be charged with bringing this programs to live --- and believe me -- it takes a WHOLE village to get this initiatives off the ground…so the more of you who get involved…the merrier!
We will be sharing a copy of this calendar with everyone who has signed-up as a member, so please…if you haven’t done so already, become a WLC member by emailing wlc@univision.net
PRESENTER: ARIELA
So if you are wondering where to begin…The names on the screen are the names of the community leaders in your market where the groups are being formed as we speak ….
And as Tonia said, if you don’t see your market on the list… not to worry! Just e-mail the steering committee and someone will reach out and help you get started.
I..am just one of eight amazing women who launched the WLC LA community and I would like to take this opportunity to have them stand up and be recognized (applause)
There are also sixteen others in the NY/NJ communities and even though I cannot see you please stand up and be recognized (applause)
And finally our Miami community. The ten mothers of the Women’s Leadership Academy which is now being deployed across UCI, please stand up and be recognized (applause)…
Do know, that as you begin activating your local communities, everyone who stood up today, is available to guide you, and share with you their best practices.
So reach out, ask questions and most importantly get involved…since being part of the WLC is about helping YOU succeed. Thank you.
