4. Summary & Roles
• This unit will focus on Earth’s composition and will teach the
students the layers of the Earth. They will learn through
written, verbal, and oral components. Projects and group
learning will be used.
• Teacher’s Role – The teacher will serve as a liaison for the
groups and will help coordinate learning, planning, and
outlines.
• Parent’s Role – To make sure students are staying on task so
that it does not put groups behind. Students will have
assigned homework parts.
• Student Role – Stay on task, learn, stay organized, help
others, communicate with group, turn in assignments.
5. Benefits
• This lesson will be an introductory lesson for science that will
be learned later on. This lesson will introduce composition so
that learning substances and materials will come easily later
on.
6. Standards & Objectives
• Standard: Describe the Earth's three layers.
• Objective: Make a styrofoam model of the inside of the Earth
with different materials OR cut open an apple.

7. Project Based Learning
• This project will be in groups and the students will have to
work together to complete the task. The project element of
this lesson will provide the student with more thorough
learning than test memorization sometimes offers. The
students will learn, analyze, and communicate what they learn
to others. They will develop an end result that they can look
back on after it is finished. They will also learn collaboration
and teamwork.
