First & basic part of Personality
made up of
Drive for
destruction,
self-
destruction, domi
nance
UNIVERSAL –
everybody has the
same id drive!!!
Everybody has
Thanatos, everybody
has Eros, no matter
where and how you
were born – we all
have the same
“instincts” – the
same id!
THANAT
OS
•Driven by the Pleasure Principle
•Only concerned with
gratification
•Does not consider anything
else (eg social
setting, appropriateness, availab
ility etc)
•Your value system
•Your moral and ethical
code
•Your idea of what is
right and what is wrong
•Your idea of what is
socially acceptable and
what is not
•Your idea of what is
appropriate for
situations and what is
not.
•Is the Superego universal
like the id? Why?
It’s the part inside of you that
makes you feel guilty when you
have done something that
conflicts with your value, moral
or ethical system.
It’s the part inside of you that
gives your motivation to strive
for the best, to accomplish
commendable things
It’s the part inside of you that
makes you feel proud of yourself
when you have achieved
something you set out to
accomplish
He embarrassed you –
Kill him, hurt
him, destroy him, make
him pay -
You cant kill him, you must
not hurt him, you must
forgive him, you should try to
be nice to him. God wants
you to turn the other cheek.
YOUR
ID
YOUR
SUPEREGO
YOU
http://freudsigmund.blogspot.com/2010/12/id-ego-super-ego.html
The Negotiator
The Peacemaker
Finds a solution to make
the Id and the Superego satisfied
•Awareness and adjustment to environmental
circumstances
•What is realistically possible?
•What is socially acceptable?
•What is appropriate?
•What are the costs and benefits?
•What are the risks, requirements and
outcomes?
I WANT SEX, I
WANT IT NOW
NOW – I’m going
to grab somebody
and do it right
here on the table!
That is inappropriate, you should
feel guilty for having “immoral
intentions”, God says that is a sin.
You must NEVER carry out that
impulse publically!!!
You will be ridiculed for public indecency.
It is not socially acceptable to just start
having sex whenever you feel like
it, wherever you are. It is not appropriate
conduct nor is it an appropriate situation
The ID really
wants it
The Superego
demands that you
don’t carry out
behaviour that is
morally and socially
inappropriate!
Find a happy solution or compromise
that will make the id, the superego
and reality satisfied!
How does the Ego mediate the crisis arising
from the conflict between id drive and the
superego?
“Sublimation is a defense mechanism that allows us
to act out unacceptable impulses by converting these
behaviors into a more acceptable form. For example, a
person experiencing extreme anger might take up
kick-boxing as a means of venting frustration. Freud
believed that sublimation was a sign of maturity that
allows people to function normally in socially
acceptable ways.”

You have a huge test to study for, but you don't really feel like
working.
Instead, you ask your parents if you could go to a party, but they
say no. What do you do?
A-You decide to suck it up and study for your test- you want to make
sure you get good marks
B-You listen to your parents, but you still are too lazy to study for your
test so you do it after some video games/movies.
C-You decide to go to the party anyways. You can have a good time
and when you come home you could deal with your parents then.
1.
Let's say you've just become the leader of a country.
You need a way to govern your people. How do you go
about doing this?
A -You think to yourself that you don't like rules; you'd
rather just let your people live however they want.
B-You base your laws off of ones you either read in the
Bible or ones you think are morally right.
C-You see how the country was running before you
became leader and view the positive and negative sides.
You change what you dislike
2.
There's a really hot person that just transferred to your
school. You really want to go out with him or her,
so what do you do?
A-Talk to him a bit to get to know him first. Building up a
friendship is the best way to start a relationship.
B-Just go up and ask him out straightforward. Hey, if you
like the guy, you're not going to miss your chance!
C-Wait for him to approach you. If he likes you then he'll make
the move.
3.
Someone that you have a crush on invites you to a party this
Friday, but that's exactly the same day and time your best friend asked
you to go shopping to choose an outfit for their sister’s wedding later
on this month.
What do you choose?
A- You decide to go with your friend. She would be really hurt if you turned
her down again just to go some party with someone you hardly know.
B-You think about it and decide to go with your crush- Besides, this
invitation is very rare – only the coolest people are invited. You can go
shopping anytime - you reschedule with your friend!
C-You tell both of them you can make it, going with your friend half the time
and your crush the other half.
4.
Do you have a religion?
A- Yes, and I follow it strongly. I’m very faithful
B- No, I never really got into it.
C- I do, but I don't do anything to strengthen my faith.
5.
What do you want to make your career?
A-You want to do something that will help mankind in some way like
becoming a doctor or teacher.
B-You want to get a job with something you'll have fun doing for the rest of
your life. You definitely don't want to get bored with.
C-You want to get a job that deals with discovering new things or learning
about the world around you.
6.
You and your friends decide they want to do something this
weekend. How do you make the plans?
A-Think of what all you're doing this weekend and decide on the best time
and place you can meet.
B-Just go with the flow- whatever happens that day will happen. It's more
fun that way!
C-Ask everyone what they want to do and see if there's a way you can
make everyone happy.
7.
What type of person do you usually go for?
A-Someone good-looking and funny.
B-Someone that cares about you and the issues of the world.
C-Someone intelligent that can hold a good conversation with you.
8.
Do you get jealous?
A- All the time
B-Only when provoked
C-No
9.
What is your sense of humour like?
A-Childish – you play a lot of practical jokes, you do a lot of crass or toilet
humour. You love Mr Bean.
B- Silly – not entirely all sericus intelligent jokes – a good balance of
clever jokes and light-hearted fun – you like the comedian Trevor Noah!
C-Witty – you like shows like “the Big Bang Theory”, you always have a
clever or sharp comeback to anything, you’re famous at making puns,
you think cartoons where someone falling over and getting smashed
on the head are dumb. You hate Mr Bean!
