Caleb Poetry
1. What is civilized? What is wild? What have we gained By complicating society?
2. Hundreds of years ago The settlers worried, sweat, and toiled. Struggling to build Log Cabins and plant rows of potatoes. While a wilderness not yet tainted. Threw bounty at them.
3. The Indians slept under the stars, And feasted on deer, buffaloe, spring water, wild berries
4. Why does “produce” sound saintly, “ Consume” sound evil And “survive” sound desperate?
5. Today we sit in desks Typing numbers onto hills of piled stapled papers. Thinking we are rejects. Worrying about deadlines and bills. Always trying to get our fill.
6. The black civic will look good in my garage. I will look like the ideal guy. Who doesn’t seem to notice his daily styles fit with his daily activities. He wears Nike shoes at the gym, Vans on the street, And “Oh”, (he must be the “outside magazine type”) merrels in the car.
7. Like a King rashly searching out “assasins” We constantly have things in the back of our minds. That don’t matter.
8. An Indian who followed the buffaloe And starved at 35. Lived more than any of us Who constantly worry about extending our life span. And are crushed by a drunk’s right fender at 50.
9. In the wilderness, life is lived, and died. End of story. We want to determine who we are. We want to determine when we die.
13. The Puzzle Purse Caleb Posey Her purse explains her It is made of puzzle pieces A series of loud, seemingly random parts To an unexpectedly complex image that is her support for statements or movements it compliments her flowery tie dye dress her purple horn-rimmed glasses and the peace sign around her neck.
14. A perfect day Caleb Posey It was a perfect day We meandered down the creek Paddling through liquid crystal Constantly between the liquid, icy, refreshing water And the dry, radiant, warming heat of the sun. Constantly between rushing rocky rapids And placid pools Rippled only by us And the rookery of great blue herons overhead. We floated between stern rocky bluffs And occasionally warm, green meadows. Finally, before I even realized it was over We reached a bridge That would transport us to civilization Where the dead concrete surrounds us Like coffins that should be wagons And would hold back this wilderness Full of fear, excitement, isolation, and peaceful boredom All at the same time But also life.
15. you killed her you bought a knife found her alone and killed How could I kill her? you were best friends We were best friends! Sure, I was there When you showed up Someone else was there I showed up afterward To find my best friend Dead And now you accuse me, and I will rot in jail you were there when I showed up You will rot in jail You Killed her By Caleb Posey you killed her you bought a knife found her alone and killed How could I kill her? you were best friends We were best friends!
