need to know as well. To help you determine whether a trucking company is
the right one for you or not, here are the top 10 questions you need to ask
potential employers.
1.) How much do you pay? Most of the time, trucking companies
will pay you a per mileage rate that will increase as you gain
experience. Some companies will even honor experience with a
previous employer. Make sure to ask about their entire pay structure,
not just mileage rates.
2.) Do you pay on short miles or practical miles? Most trucking
companies pay on shortest miles and not on the most practical route
for truckers. It can be a difference of 5% in mileage, so it is important
that you know this upfront.
3.) What is the policy on home time? Oftentimes, the company will
have a defined time for home policy. This outlines the number of days
you are expected to be out in the truck working before being able to
return home and the amount of time you will be at home each time.

in the various CSAs? Lower scores are always better.
5.) How old are the trucks? With the changing regulations
pertaining to toxic emissions, engine and truck manufacturers are
struggling to keep up with it all. You want someone who is staying at
the forefront of the problem and demonstrating a desire to comply
with all of the regulations.
6.) Are there auxiliary power units inside of the truck? When
you have to be out on the road for an extended period of time, an
auxiliary unit will help you feel more at home. They provide you with a
means of powering a mini-fridge, microwave and various other
appliances.
7.) What type of runs do you do? Some companies have local or
regional jobs available, while others are dedicated to just one
customer. This can provide the driver with more consistency as to
when they are going to be home. Performance matters when it comes
to these jobs.
8.) Are your logs electronic? While many drivers once feared the
electronic log, many are embracing them today. Carriers are able to
feed real-time hours straight into the system to make sure you are
using your time efficiently. It ensures records are current and in
compliance with the law.
9.) Where are the terminals located? It is important that you know
where the terminals are located. Find out whether they have showers,
laundry facilities, maintenance staff, fueling capabilities and anything
else you can think of that you might need on the road.
10.) What do others have to say about the company? Talk to
fellow drivers about the company. See how they think their employer
is doing. Message boards and social media outlets are flooded with
information, so head on there and check it out.
