1. The document describes a student experiment to levitate a paper "ghost" using a static-charged balloon. Students place the ghost on a surface and rub a balloon on their hair to build up a static charge, then bring it near the ghost which rises toward the balloon.
2. It provides a brief history of ghost sightings, including one of the earliest documented in ancient Greece and mentions of haunted locations in the late 1800s.
3. The conclusion states that cultures are fascinated by ghosts as they provide explanations for strange phenomena and satisfy curiosity about the afterlife and unknown truths about death. Humans benefit more from the idea of ghosts than ghosts benefit from humans.

2. Before We Begin
While doing our research we found
that a lot of people conduct research
experiments to explain “ghost”. So,
we decided to do a little experiment
of our own….
3. Static Balloon
“Ghost” Experiment
Step One: Place your ghost on
a flat surface.
Step Two: Blow up the balloon
and tie it. Then rub it really fast
through your hair for about 10
seconds. This will add a static
charge.
Step Three: Slowly bring the
balloon near the ghost, and the
ghost will begin to rise toward
the balloon. (Our ghost “arms”
actually reached toward the
balloon as we got it near.) If
the balloon is charged enough,
the ghost will rise and float
right up to the balloon, even
when it is several inches away
4. History
• It is said that a ghost is the spirit of someone who has passed away
and has unfinished business on earth.
• Most of the documented sightings first took place in the late 1800’s.
• One of the first documented sightings happened over 3000
years ago in Athens, Greece
• Anthenodorus was a philosopher who stayed in an
abandoned haunted house and started to hear the noise of
rattling chains. Later that night he saw a ghost, who
eventually led him to his burial site.
• In the 1880’s a cheating husband and maid killed themselves
in a home. Years later they haunt the converted restaurant.
• One of the most talked about and the most traveled ghost in
Europe is Anne Boleyn. She was the second wife of King
Henry VIII, and the mother of Queen Elisabeth I. Anne was
accused of witchcraft, treason, incest and adultery. Because
of these accusations she was executed in May of 1536
• May 19th, which is the anniversary of her death, in Blickling
Hall is where she was born, she arrives in a carriage that was
driven by six headless horses and a headless driver. Every
year she sits inside with a white dress on with her severed
head sitting in her lap.
6. Cultural Analysis
Reasons why our
cultural tends to like
ghost:
• They give a simple
answer to strange
phenomena like
random opening doors
or strange sounds we
hear in the night
• Everyone wants to
know what will happen
to them when they die
Types of ghost we have created:
• Ghosts as spirits with
unfinished business in life
“The Sixth Sense”
Reasoning: we see a lot of people
die too young or unexpectedly
• Spirits who were killed
unexpectedly and we want
them to get their revenge.
Reasoning: We want to see closure,
revenge
• Ghost that are trapped to walk
the earth as a penance for their
sins, more like prisoner.
“A Christmas Carol”
• Ghost or spirit that are scary
“Poltergeist”
Reasoning: Used to scare the
audience
Very different versions of ghosts!!
7. In Conclusion
• Overall, our society places importance on
ghost for many different reasons. Through
history we have not only spent time
documenting ghost sightings and the
unexplainable, but also creating movies such
as The Haunting, Ghostbusters, and
Paranormal Activities in order to capture these
events. All in all, our culture continues to
express interest in ghost for multiple reasons
including; because they give reasoning to the
unexplainable, the afterlife, and the unknown
truths about death. Ideally, humans benefit
more from the idea ghost, than they can
benefit from us.
