Easter Egg (Media) - In computer software and media, an Easter egg is an
intentional inside joke, hidden message or image, or secret feature of a work.
Courses are designed to prepare
our graduates for the workplace
of tomorrow.
Faculty now embed innovative active learning
assignments that featured the key skills
employers are searching for in their new
candidates; critical thinking, communication,
creativity and collaboration.
Required credentials for my position - Masters in instructional design or instructional technology…..
In most cases for higher education, degrees are required by accrediting institution. Upper management, and leadership review.
Skills needed for my position
My start in the field…..
What classrooms and online, “remote” learning looked like in the 90’s……
Ask the #1 AV tech…..
If lucky, had unit with spare lamp
Next was…. Change slide
TV and VCR’s…..
Not the fancy ones with front loading, but top load units.
Pushing carts
We started to see better compression, Itunes and iTunes U came out.
First podcasting…. Of course iPods.
From there we started help faculty create content for courses and then in 2005, started creating online courses at USFSP.
Today we have over 140 courses every semester.
Since 2005, online learning courses have evolved just as fast as the technology industry.
Today online courses are much more than a way to deliver course content.
They have what you might call easter eggs.

Instructional design teams look different at every institution. Some have large teams where the roles can be split up across many members, some have small teams where some members have to be a “jack of all trades” - but let’s talk about some of the common roles you may consider using your technology background
Consult with faculty
get an understanding for the course function, how they envision the students moving through it, assignments, materials, and outcomes
Create course design plan - work with faculty to create a plan for how the course will be built, including all the elements from other members of the team
Coordinate team/Manage project- communicate deliverables and timelines
Ensure course alignment- explain alignment
Provide training to faculty
Project management applications
Central location for: Asset tracking, document storage, timelines and deadlines, communication tools
Collaboration applications
Shared work space for planning materials
Learning Management Systems
The system that houses the course - like Canvas
You may say - well hey that does not sound very technology specific, but an instructional designer needs to know enough about all the technologies used to develop a course to be able to offer support or direct their team member to potential solutions when needed.

Sometimes these are two different roles - a videographer and a video editor
Involves studios large and small, recording equipment such as cameras, lights, and microphones. Editing programs like Camtasia, Adobe Premier Pro, and others.
associate's or bachelor's degree with coursework in videography, journalism, television, and film
Professional certifications like adobe certified expert
Learning management system is a base, but there is opportunity to create programs that integrate with specific courses or the entire system. Examples include accessibility checker.

Experience: .NET, ColdFusion, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, jQuery, Microsoft SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS
Certifications if applicable
Examples can include illustrations of concepts, infrographics, graphs
(InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat)
Depending on the size and resources of the team, sometimes all roles will work together to develop interactive learning opportunities - somewhat like this one.
