•2 types of motivation
•Intrinsic- I want to do this.
•Extrinsic- Carrot and stick!
So what's better?
PUZZLE OF MOTIVATION-EXTRINSIC
• Rewards- Money?
• Can this work?
• For simple tasks yes!
• Found that it can result in negative results.
PUZZLE OF MOTIVATION
• Essentially if the task is simple- laying
bricks. The simple reward like money
improves performance.
• Unless you pay them a reward that is
too large! More money can actually
reduce effectiveness.
NEGATIVE RESULTS FROM EXTRINSIC
MOTIVATION
• Diminished
• Lower performance
• Less creativity
• Unethical behavior
• Short-term thinking
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION
• The candle Study!
• What they Learned-
• If the task is at all complex and pay is fair- Then
autonomy, mastery, and allowing for freedom leads
to much better results.
PUZZLE OF MOTIVATION
• Business are doing it entirely wrong!!!
• Even though the science tells them what to do.
So if you know the motivation needed then you
should use what works best!
