Select a method that can be used to analyze research (e.g., correlation, statistical
significance, etc.). Obtain faculty approval of your selected method prior to
beginning this project.
Prepare a 10 to 12-slide PowerPoint® presentation in which you explain the use of
your selected method in analyzing research. Be sure to address the following items
in your explanation:
Describe the way in which your selected method can be used to analyze data
Demonstrate the use of your selected method using an actual data set. You may use
a data set from a study you have found on-line at UOPX’s library or from one of
the following sources.
Census Bureau –www.census.gov Bureau of Justice Statistics – bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov
Bureau of Labor Statistics –www.bls.gov National Center for Health Statistics –
www.cdc.gov/nchs Centers for Disease Controland Prevention –www.cdc.gov
National Center for Educational Statistics – nces.ed.gov
Discuss the advantages and the drawbacks associated with your selected method

3. How will you use psychological research after you receive your graduate degree
and incorporate it into your professional life?
What are the areas of psychological research you would want to make sure you
keep current in? What peer-reviewed journals would be the mostuseful for you as
you go on in your professional careers?

4. Null Hypothesis, Significance Level, ANOVA vs. t-Tests
So give this a shot: design an imaginary study or discuss a published study you’ve
read that has an experimental or quasi-experimental design that used or would use
t-tests or ANOVAs in the data analysis. Briefly tell us the nuts and bolts of the
study and then get to the discussionof:
What the null hypothesis is in your experiment.
What the level of significance you chose in your experiment (go ahead, it’s not
being graded…)
Describe the statistical method you used in the analysis of the data, either t-tests or
ANOVAs. What determined your choice?

Now for correlations. The conceptbehind the word correlations is good to know
well because it is the foundation of most studies: we see correlations between
things and we wonder how these correlations work a lot as professionals. What are
the different types of correlation? Now for the technical area: How is the strength
of a correlation determined?

The subject of this question is measures of central tendency. (Let’s not bother with
mode because it will rarely come up in real life.) This is THE basic part of any
quantitative study’s data analysis. Let’s make sure we’re clear about what the mean
and what the median are. Does all data have a mean and a median? Why or why
not? When is the mean the best measure of central tendency? When is the median
the best measure of central tendency? Now for an important part of many studies:
what is the standard deviation? (Don’t be shy about giving this a try; we’ll help
with explanations.) Why is sd (standard deviation) such an important term?

7. What are the similarities between single-case and small-N research designs? What
are the differences? When should you use single-case and small-N research
designs?
What are true experiments? How are threats to internal validity controlled by true
experiments? How are they different from experimental designs?

I hope you will think this discussionstarter to be fun. It’s a good way to integrate
into your understanding the reading in Chapter 11 on quasi-experimental studies.
After all, these types of studies are among the most common in psychological
research. You’ll be reading lots of these types of studies as a professional when
you want to know the latest on a psychological subject. So, give this a try:
Design an imaginary quasi-experimental study. Give us a brief description of your
study, then answer as many of the following questions as you care to:
1. What is the hypothesis of your imaginary study?
8. 2. What is/are the independent variable(s)?
3. What is/are the dependent variable(s)?
4. Briefly, how will you test your hypothesis? That is, what are the procedures you
will use in your study?
5. What led you to your hypothesis; that is, what makes you think that changing the
independent variable(s) will cause a change in the dependent variable(s)?
6. Now comes the fun question: Why could this study not be conducted with a
true-experimental design?

This question is a good one for making sure everyone will have a good
understanding of validity in psychological research. What do you see as the
relationship between external validity and internal validity? What steps can a
researcher take to strengthen the validity of these different types of studies, a
random groups design study, a repeated measures design study, and a complex
10. design? What threats to the validity of these studies’ results must be considered by
the researcher?

Martin Seligman founded in the late 1990s a new branch within Counseling
Psychology called Positive Psychology. One of the criticisms of this new branch
within the psychological community was that while it was strong on theory, there
11. were no interventions associated with it for use in therapy. The article I’m linking
for you here was the first to report on research in this area in Positive Psychology.
Positive Psychology has become the most exciting new area of psychology: there
are books coming out every month it seems and newspaper and magazine articles
about happiness every week. And they’re all based (or claim to be based)on the
research being done by Seligman and others. So, I invite you to read the article and
comment on it: what do you think of the quality of the research conducted bythe
authors? Do you agree that their methodology was valid?
What do you think of internet based studies?

hypothesis tested, methods, findings, suggestions for future research)
Evaluate the comprehensiveness of the research
Describe the design and the methods used in the study

Shaughnessy et al. write, “Self-report measures, often in the form of a

and/or reliability? Where could bias have been or become a problem in the design

Research based on observational methods historically was associated with
educational, sociological, and anthropological research in the behavioral sciences.
Only recently has it become more accepted within the psychological community
14. (Patton, 2002). Our text (Shaughnessy, Zechmeister, & Zechmeister, 2009)
categorizes observational research into three types: Participant observation,
structured observation, and field experiments. There are other ways of categorizing
it. That itself gives us a sense of how varied observational research methodologies
can be.
Are you an advocate for this type of research within psychology? Is there any
particular type of obervational research you like or dislike? Why or why not?

important or is it merely a time-consuming hassle? Describe the criteria you used
