1. Photographer Image Analysis
Art Wolfe-WildlifePhotography
Brown Bear Fishing
Purpose
The image above shows a brown bear fishing for fish in the Katmai River that is
located in Alaska; the bears will be hungry after a long winter of hibernation. The
purpose of the image could be to show how beautiful the dangerous side of
nature is. This image could be used in any nature magazines, such as national
geographic; the image could be used to promote Alaska and can be used to show
the natural world. This image can generate income if it was sold to any magazine
or used in any kind of advertising material.
Composition and framing
The image has been framed landscape to capture the entire bear and the effect
the bear is having on the water. The image has been composed to have the bears
face in the centre of the image so it is what is most in focus when looking at the
image, this is to show that the bear is the most important part of the image. The
surrounding segments of the image all have some of the thrashing water to show
the power of the bear. The bear’s body is also featured in all but two of the
segments to show the size of the great beast.
Image analysis
The brown and black colours of the bear work well against the white of the
thrashing water and the green of the foliage behind the bear. It makes the bear
stand out more against the water like it is literally leaping out the image. The
lighting in the image is natural as it was taken outside during the day, this works
as it adds to the nature element of the image. The bear is in full focus, so is the
undisturbed water, the thrashed water that is in the foreground is also in focus
however the water that is thrashing in the background and the foliage is out of
focus, this is to make what is in the foreground stand out more.
Meaning
The image has no clear meaning; it is not making any political or world related
point however it does have a theme, which is the natural world. It shows of both
the beauty and fury of the natural world. You could say it shows we must protect
our world so great animals such as the bear can survive however that is up to
interpretation.
2. Bald eagle, Glacier Bay National bay
Purpose
The image shows a bald eagle attempting to catch a fish however missing and
carrying on flying wih a water trail behind it. Like the previous image of the bear
this image was been taken to show how beatiful nature can be even if is
dangerous. This image could also be used in any nature or animal magazine, It
could also be featured in any form of adverising for Alaska, anything animal
related and anything natur related.
Compostition and framing
The eagle is not in in the centre of the image; the only thing of relevance in the
image is the water trailer that has been left behind by the eagle. The eagle is
towards the right of the frame; the image is also a landscape image so that the
eagle, the spot it hit and the water trail are all in the image clearly. The eagle is
still what is most in focus in the image.
Image Analysis
The waters colour is green due to the reflection of the foliage that is surrounding
the water, the black and white of the eagle are clear to see against the green. All
the lighting in the image is natural so the subject is fully lit by the sun. The eagle
can clearly be seen within the reflection of the water, this means that the image
has not been forged. In the image the eagle is what is in focus, the water and even
the water trail are not in focus. The shutter speed would have had to be high to
capture the water trail due to the speed it and the eagle would have been
moving.
Meaning
There is no official meaning behind the image and it does not relate to any
problems within the world, the image is just there to show the beauty of nature
3. and the wildlife that inhabit the world. The theme is nature and wildlife imagery,
it could be used to protect nature and wildlife within the world to hold this
beauty.
AnselAdam-LandscapePhotography
MountWilliamson
Purpose
The image is of Mount Williamson, Ansel Adam took the image after he did not
enlist into the army for WWII however he wished to make a patriotic
contribution. He wanted to document the American-Japanese interment so he
relocated to Manzanar California while here Adams took hundreds of photos. On
one of his visits he drove to a spot looking at a field of boulders and the
mountains had storms going on behind them. This image could be used in art
galleries and exhibitions; it could be used in any magazine that deals with the
natural world and landscape pieces. If it were used in any of these places this is
also how it would generate income, as you would have to pay for the image.
Composition and framing
The image looks like it is almost a perfect square however it is a landscape
image, in both senses of the word. The image is framed so that the bases of the
mountains are directly on the upper horizontal line; this is so that the mountains
are what takes up all the upper boxes. The rest of the boxes take up the field of
boulders. The boulder that appears most in focus is in the foreground of the
image and is mainly in the lower-centre box however it also slightly moves into
the middle-centre box. This boulder is framed so it appears as big as the
mountains that are behind it.
4. Image Analysis
The image was taken between 1943 and 1944, which means that it would have
to be in black and white. However the natural lighting is still clear to see as
sunrays are seen breaking through the clouds on to the mountains and boulders.
The clouds over the mountain with the sunlight breaking through them gives the
images a heavenly feel like the landscape is almost Godley.
Meaning
The image’s meaning is to show the beautiful location where the American-
Japanese have been segregated. It is almost like the image is showing the
beautiful face of a disgusting act that has moved hundred’s of thousands out of
their home and into segregation.
Vernal fall
Purpose
This was another image that Ansel Adam’s took as part of his American-Japanese
Interment project. This is another beautiful location that is just used to try and
make the interment look like a good thing, like they have been moved to
beautiful locations. It could be used to make the rest of America think that they
are doing a good thing for the American-Japanese population however in reality
they have been ripped from their homes.
Composition and Framing
5. The image is portrait to capture the height of the waterfall and the surrounding
trees, rocks and mountains. The image has been taken so that the waterfall is to
the left of the frame and the tree on the hill is on the right of the frame. There is
nothing significant in the centre of the frame.
Image Analysis
The image is in black and white due to the restrictions of the time however the
white of the water is balanced well by the dark and black colours of its
surroundings such as the rocks being black. It appears there is a deep focus so
everything in the shot is in perfect focus. The lighting for this image would be
natural as the image is on location at the waterfall.
Meaning
This image could be interpreted as having no meaning; it could just be viewed as
a nice image of a waterfall. However it is another image that has been used to
mask the villainy of the United States as it segregates its own people. The
waterfall could be seen as the American Japanese public who have been moved
in one singular direction and held in place by the US government, the rocks on
the bank, while president is on top of the world as shown by the tree on the hill
watching on.
Michael Clark- Adventure Sportsphotographer
Pro Surfer Josh Kurr
6. Purpose
Michael Clark is an adventure sports photographer; he takes images of the most
extreme sports within the world at the most intense points. This image is of pro
surfer Josh Kurr surfing a sizable wave at Tahiti. The image has been taken to
show the skill of the surfer, this image could be used in any types of sports
magazines and could be used at an exhibit that shows extreme sports.
Composition and Framing
The image has been taken landscape to capture the entirety of the surfer and the
wave he is in. The surfer is in the center of the image so that he appears to be the
main focus of the image. The wave almost curls around the center box and takes
up the majority of the surrounding boxes. Even though the surfer is positioned in
the center we is lower down on the image to capture the height of the wave.
Image Analysis
The main colours of the image come from the wave, blue and white of the water
brighten up the image, these colours also make the surfer stand out more, the
only fault with the colours is what the surfer is wearing, his white shirt and his
white board could have been darker to make it better contrast with the water.
The lightning would be natural, as the image has been taken outside during the
day. The image could have been edited to brighten the colours in the image, to
make the water appear brighter. The surfer is wearing normal clothes that
would be warned on a day-to-day basis in a hot country, t-shirt and shorts, the
only viable prop is the surfboard.
Meaning
The image has no worldly meaning I believe that the image is just to advertise
and show the surfers skill. It could be said that him surfing through the wave is
like he skill as he can easily cut through to win and succeed.
AryehPettit taking the high road
7. Purpose
The image is of Aryeh Pettit taking the high road in the humongous pipe at the
Lake Cunningham skate park in California. The image was taken to show the skill
of the biker stunt artist and the extremities he will go to. The image could be
used in any bike/ stunt magazines or any form of advertising for the skate park.
Composition and framing
The end of the tunnel is perfectly positioned in the center of the image and
immediately catchers your attention. The biker is positioned to the left of the
frame, the image has been shot portrait to capture the whole inside surface of the
tunnel as well as the biker who is moving at a high speed. The image has also
been framed so that it appears the closer to the center the image gets the smaller
the tunnel gets.
Image Analysis
The lighting for the image is natural and would appear from both ends of the
tunnel and provide the image with both a backlight and a key light, which is why
certain edges of the tunnel are in shadow. The end of the tunnel is also a frame
within a frame with the tunnel opening being the other frame, the tunnel
opening give gives a whole new image and the picture changes from a grey
tunnel to a sunny scene outside. The biker is wearing normal clothes jean ands a
t-shirt, he is also wearing gloves and a helmet to protect him from injury and the
only prop shown is the bike. The bikers red shirt makes him pop out against the
grey tunnel. The image is not in deep focus as the outside of the tunnel is outta
focus and the biker is what is in most focus as he is the main thing in the image.
Meaning
The image’s meaning could be seen as defying expectations, as it almost appears
that the biker is defying gravity as he is going over the horizon and up the tunnel
so gravity isn’t holding him back. The meaning could be anything is possible and
anything is achievable, even the biker breaking gravity.
